Quote:
First, an attempt to clarify the unintended (?) titling confusion in BBE's Strange Games series. Strange Games and Things, assembled by the label's Peter Adarkwah, was released in 1997. The following year, there was Strange Games and Funky Things, another disc curated by Adarkwah. Released in 2001, the triple-disc Strange Games and Things bundled the first two discs and added a mix of those tracks from DJ Spinna. Kenny Dope then presented Strange Games and Funky Things, Vol. 3 in 2003. Adarkwah assembled Strange Funky Games and Things a couple years later. And this, released in 2010, is Strange Games and Funky Things, Vol. 5. Spinna, Adarkwah, and Jonathan Rau compiled this particular volume. Spinna supplies a 78-minute, 21-track mix, while 16 of the tracks are provided in unmixed form on a second disc. As is the case with the rest of the series, most of the material will not be familiar to those outside the small circle of expert crate-diggers and fiends of likeminded compilation series (Harmless' Life: Styles, for instance). The most popular of the lot here is likely the Soul Searchers' "Ashley's Roachclip," if only through its break, heard in dozens of rap, R&B, and dance songs, from "Paid in Full" to "Girl You Know It's True." Wood, Brass & Steel, anchored by Doug Wimbish and Skip McDonald (future members of the Sugar Hill label house band), was one of several acts to reinterpret Ronnie Laws' jazz-funk classic "Always There"; those who grew up in and around Detroit during the '80s might recognize its geeky intro as the theme for the children's science program Kidbits. "Get It Up for Love" appears in its breezy folk-soul-rock original form, recorded by Ned Doheny; Tata Vega retooled the song for dancefloors in 1979, when it appeared on Motown. (In 1981, Chaka Khan did something similar with Doheny's "What Cha Gonna Do for Me.") Sylvia Saint James' soaring and mystical "Motherland," co-written by Lenny White, shares thematic and sonic qualities with the Jones Girls' "Nights Over Egypt" (not to mention a year of release, 1980). Other highlights come from Chicago soul legend Richard Evans, whose whirlwind, Linda Williams-led "Capricorn Rising" (also heard on 4hero's Life: Styles) is florid Latin jazz-funk in the best possible way, and Family Tree, whose "Family Tree" features Sharon Brown in mid-'70s form. Spinna's mixing is just fine, as usual, emphasizing the songs over showmanship. ~ Andy Kellman

One of Bobby Watson's best 1980s outings, LOVE REMAINS presents the lauded saxophonist (and former Jazz Messenger) in small-ensemble mode, leading an exceptional set that also prominently features renowned pianist John Hicks. While echoes of John Coltrane can easily be heard in Watson's inviting-yet-adventurous playing throughout, "Dark Days," dedicated to Nelson Mandela, finds the alto player in a more subdued and plaintive mood, effectively displaying the range of his dynamic sound, which can easily shift from avant-garde to accessible. Impressively avoiding many of the slick production trappings of the era, this '86 album perfectly embodies Watson's refined aesthetic, and stands out one of the finest recordings in his catalogue.

01. Treemonisha: A Real Slow Drag (Arr. for Solo Piano)
It is difficult not to be won over by the rhythm and unmistakable thematic creativity of Scott Joplin's compositions. Born in 1867 or '68 (the exact date is not known), and gifted with a natural talent, Joplin began to play as a self-taught pianist in the wealthy homes at which his mother worked as a maid. Later, he took piano lessons and learned the craft as a composer, a fact that is evident in the beautiful balance we identify in his works. Before turning thirty, Joplin was already known in the saloons, particularly thanks to Maple Leaf Rag, a piece that marks the evolution of a genre, and that makes him known to the wide public as "The King of Ragtime."
This set contains all of Joplin's piano compositions: 42 Ragtimes (including the slightly syncopated "Cleopha" and "The School of Ragtime"), 5 Marches, 5 Waltzes, 1 Tango, 1 "Afro-American Intermezzo".
The compositions are ordered more or less chronologically, which helps the listener gather a sense of the composer's evolution of both form and style. What emerges is a portrait of Joplin as a composer who is everything but "monothematic." Quite the contrary: the many tunes found in his work for piano are rarely repetitive, and reveal the unlimited inspiration of a composer who is always ready to find new solutions and occasionally even experiment with new genres such as the foxtrot (the trio section from "Peacherine Rag") and the blues (the trios of "Wall Street Rag" and "Pine Apple Rag"). Sometimes, Joplin even seems to borrow from the Classical Style ("Euphonic Sounds") and the Romantic Style (the trio from "Magnetic Rag," in which we might hear glimses of Chopin).
Collaborations with friends such as Arthur Marshall ("Swipesy," "Lily Queen"), Scott Hayden ("Sunflower Slow Drag," "Something Doing," "Felicity Rag," "Kismet Rag"), and Louis Chauvin ("Heliotrope Bouquet") further enrich the creative material from which Joplin never declined to draw inspiration.
Some of the pieces, especially those written between 1906 and 1909, in which we find great clarity of writing and structure, can be considered masterpieces in the genre of ragtime for their quality, balance, and refinement.
The performance of polymath Alessandro Simonetto, neither predictable nor limited by philological notions, emphasizes the coloristic and rhythmic nature of the music. In it, we identify great attention to the nuances present in Joplin's harmonic ideas and rhythmic patterns, so often commonly undermined and mistreated.
The recording, made in three different periods, was made on a Steinway D-274 that was selected by the legendary pianist Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli in 1968, now owned by the performer.

This is a 25-song compilation drawn from Littlefield's output for Modern between 1949 and 1952, including the sole hit he scored for that label, "It's Midnight (No Place to Go)." Littlefield is somewhat more obscure than many other artists mining a similar blues/R&B crossover field in Los Angeles studios in the early 1950s, such as Charles Brown, Amos Milburn, and Floyd Dixon. On the basis of the music here, Littlefield deserves to be in the same echelon as the aforementioned performers. He was a fine pianist who was skilled in the boogie woogie style and tempered for the times with a modern R&B influence. His use of triplets, according to the liner notes, influenced Fats Domino. He was also more versatile than some piano bluesmen of the era, and was comfortable with slow and melancholy-tinged ballads as well as jumping uptempo R&B tunes (the boasting "I Like It" is a standout). His singing was more easygoing than distinctive, but still had a relaxed charm. Many of the sides here were cut with some of the Los Angeles studio musicians - horn player Maxwell Davis, guitarist Johnny Moore, and others - that were instrumental in setting the paces for the jazzy, urbane R&B music of the early 1950s in L.A. The sound is very good, and is mastered from the original acetate lacquers, with only occasional (and slight) surface noise peeping through. The disc includes five previously unissued cuts (three of which are alternate takes). A second volume of Littlefield's Modern sides was in the works from Ace as of the 1999 issue of this collection.

Quote:
On his first offering in five years, Argentine bandoneon master Dino Saluzzi teams with veteran ECM session drummer Jon Christensen on Senderos. Of the 14 cuts here, ten are duets -- freewheeling, often improvised, intimate, and engaging to the hilt. What marks great improvisers is the ability to listen. The thought, spontaneous creation, and response that go into these pieces are remarkable. The players feel like a single entity as they wheel through their respective roles. The intense lyricism inherent in Saluzzi's approach comes from his immersion in the evolving folk musics of South America during these past 30 years and his incorporation of these musics in his own contemporary compositions. In addition, his love of jazz's dynamic and harmonic innovations, tango, and classical music meld in these duets. Christensen is the perfect foil, slipping inside the rhythmic bent of Saluzzi's chromatic forays and tagging them with his own spare flourishes, and moving them toward an opaque margin of expression while making them feel almost like dances. Four of the pieces here are Saluzzi bandoneon solos; indeed, they are songs. Saluzzi's deep sense of history and memory evoke not only earlier eras but the bittersweet nostalgia that communicates the ghostly traces of cultural -- particularly musical -- history as it marks emergence, evolution, and disappearance. Simply put, there is no other recording like this. It is a watershed marking a brilliant artist's return to recording, and a step outside his comfort zone that offers proof of the restless and poignant direction of his muse and his ability to translate it directly, honestly, and with passion.

Norn Iron's Touch Sensitive keep it close to holmes (sorry!) with label co-founder David's quiet soundtrack of string arrangements for the new Liam Neeson flick set in Belfast
"Touch Sensitive is proud to present it's third release with Ivor Novello and Bafta Award-winning modern master of the soundtrack, David Holmes, working in collaboration with composer Brian Irvine. Set in Northern Ireland, directed by Holmes' longtime friends Glenn Leyburn and Lisa Barros D'Sa (Good Vibrations, Cherrybomb), and written by legendary Irish playwright Owen McCafferty (whom Holmes has known for forty years), the film tells the extraordinary story of Tom (Liam Neeson) and Joan (Lesley Manville) - their life and love as they enter the uncertainty and upset of Joan's cancer diagnosis.
In a career rich in highly personal work, Ordinary Love is up there with the most affecting in Holmes' canon. Recorded between Abbey Road and Holmes' own Drama Studio, the soundtrack features input from some of his most trusted collaborators. Holmes states: "I worked on the score with Brian Irvine. He is a longtime friend and the first person I ever had studio experience with 27 years ago. It felt important to work with Brian on this as his father (Ronnie), Owen's father (Gerry) and my father (Jackie) - all now deceased - were great friends through a shared love of Point-to-Point horse racing and their work as bookmakers. For the three of us to work together on this was an opportunity I couldn't ignore." There is also contributions from Holmes' bandmates, Jade Vincent and Keefus Ciancia, who comprise the trio Unloved. The group's sound has been central to the much lauded Killing Eve soundtracks, which saw Holmes and Ciancia pick up a Bafta in 2019. Vincent provides a stand-out performance - lending her haunting and smoky vocals to the albums centrepiece and final track - 'Isn't It So'.
The score to Ordinary Love wasn't inspired by any other soundtrack or even musical composition but by a mathematical theory called The Game of Life. Devised by mathematician John Conway in 1970, The Game of Life is not your typical computer game. It consists of a collection of cells which, based on a few mathematical rules, can live, die or multiply as the cells form various patterns throughout the course of the game. "Because of the nature of the story, this really spoke to Brian and I in a musical sense and we started to create the score with the notion that the notes in each cue resembled human cells, living and dying as Joan's journey with cancer unfolded." Much like the film's recurring motifs - such as the couple's regular hospital visits - the score uses gentle rhythms and repetition to underline the comfort and balance in Tom and Joan's routine - even though a potentially life-changing event looms over them. The score grounds the listener whilst providing an almost dreamlike blank canvas in which to live and to love. "Creating the score to Ordinary Love was by far the most challenging I've ever worked on. The film is a very delicate piece and Tom and Joan's everyday life is very normal so trying to create a soundtrack that not only felt like their world but had its own unique voice with real emotion wasn't easy."
