Anyone who's suffered through the sound quality of Collectables Records' Golden Classics should seriously consider Ace's collection as an alternative. The Meadowlarks' best work on Dootone, RPM, and Original Sound are all represented. The sound isn't perfect, but it is very, very good, and all of the songs from Golden Classics are here, along with ten more that are just as good. This CD covers a wide range: hauntingly ethereal slow ballads such as "Heaven And Paradise," "Untrue," and "Devil or Angel" (the latter previously unreleased); upbeat dance numbers like "Love Only You," "Oop Boopy Oop," and "Boogie Woogie Teenage"; and rip-roaring rockers like "I Got Tore Up," all of them impressive in their vocal dexterity. Perhaps the best track here is "Blue Moon," a reverent yet bluesy harmony rendition that might've charmed even Richard Rodgers. Some of the stuff leans toward conventionality, such as "Doin' the Cha Cha," but even it is so surprising in its sultry vocalizing, that's it's well worth the three-minute digression. On the other end of the spectrum is the endlessly witty, comical "Embarrassing Moments," the epitome of teenage libido in action. The moody "L.F.M.S.T. Blues" and the presence of some highly detailed annotation kind of seal the deal; this is the CD to get on the Meadowlarks.

Quote:
The versions of Leos Janácek's String Quartet No. 2, "Intimate Letters," heard here are both new. Neither quite delivers the "radical evolution in the character of the work" promised in the booklet (in French and English, with the Alpha label's usual wonderful art-historical essay by Denis Grenier), but both are intriguing. The version concluding the disc uses a viola d'amore, a middle-sized Baroque viol with sympathetic strings that create a sweet, caressing sound entirely appropriate for a work dedicated to the composer's much younger (38 years) mistress. This instrumentation was apparently Janácek's intention, but he gave up on it after rehearsals ran into unspecified problems. Probably players of the rather difficult instrument were scarce indeed in Prague in 1928. Its restoration does draw attention to the active role of the viola part in this constantly expressive quartet, but so does the version played on the first four tracks. This is made from a new edition of the work, drawn from copies of the work used in rehearsals made before Janácek's death. (He never heard it played in public performance.) It differs from the one usually heard in various details, many of them having to do with tempo and tending to emphasize the shifting moods and episodic quality of the work. The String Quartet No. 1, also a product of the composer's old age, is also programmatic; it is based on an episode in a Tolstoy short story. The Quatuor Diotima offers a passionate performance of both quartets that would merit consideration in any case, but sample the viola d'amore's opening utterance at the beginning of track 9, and you may decide, even if you are already a confirmed admirer of Janácek's tense but richly romantic music, that a rehearing of these works is in order.

Quote:
Although a young man new to the scene, it would be wrong to think Dom Martin hasn't paid his life and musical dues. Brought up in the often tough, but community driven, streets of Belfast Northern Ireland, Dom traded his craft locally for a time without a (self confessed) clue how to break into the (international) music business and possibly with too much humility to try. 'Discovered' by his current manager, Dom has made a fairly 'meteoric' rise in terms of today's industry, with his first ever EP release attracting BBC 6 music and BBC Radio 2 support - including a converted session with Cerys Matthews and many other radio and TV performances and quite rightly, he now has a number of international tours and Festivals in the book for 2020. His jaw dropping, entirely natural sounding and unforced/unschooled skill on acoustic guitar, matched with an authentic 'Belfast blues' voice, brings to mind comparisons with many from (Glasgow born) John Martyn to Rory Gallagher, with nods to many in-between, not least perhaps the likes of Van Morrison and Foy Vance.
In 2019 (his debut year) Dom has undertaken two very successful UK tours, as well as playing many festivals including the International Guinness Blues on The Bay Festival, The International Rory Gallagher Festival at Ballyshannon (including the final night Big Top stage), The Letterkenny Rhythm and Blues Festival, a 5 show tour in Moscow, The Great British Rhythm and Blues Festival in Colne Lancashire, The Harvest Time Festival in Monaghan (main stage), The Canterbury Festival in Kent and he also made his mainland European debut in Switzerland at the Blues Zeppelin Festival.
Dom has opened for Elles Bailey and Jo Harman and has also been asked by noted promoters AGMP (and indeed Jo Harman herself) to be special guest support to the (US Grammy Winner) Mike Farris/Jo Harman big double bill London show on Wednesday 22nd January 2020 at the prestigious Under The Bridge venue, in Chelsea.
Dom was recently awarded Best Solo/Acoustic Act in the European Blues Awards 2019 so all in all, a pretty impressive debut year and a very impressive and personal debut album released to critical acclaim.
Dom is undoubtedly another fine product of the Northern Irish music factory responsible for so many fine artists and bands over the years.

Quote:
Of the three 2007 Dolly Parton reissues from Sony, Jolene is the most absorbing musically and the most problematic lyrically. A sparkling production creates a rich backdrop for both "Jolene" and "When Someone Wants to Leave" (both Parton originals), mixing acoustic guitar, country instruments (steel guitar, dobro), and light percussion. This tasteful mix, nicely spread across the stereo spectrum with Parton front and center, is a joy to listen to. Lyrically, however, these songs are a long way from Loretta Lynn's "You Ain't Woman Enough to Take My Man." Parton's female protagonists are downright pitiful, adrift in a world where a more attractive woman might take their man, where a woman cannot let go of a man who no longer loves her, and where a man is the "highlight" of her life ("Highlight of My Life.") Jolene, originally released in 1974, feels like a shot across the bow of the feminist movement, a reaffirmation that many women still liked the men to wear the pants (women, presumably, who listened to old-fashioned country music). This seems somewhat peculiar now, in that no one looking at her long, distinguished career and commanding stage presence would accuse Parton of being a weak-kneed songbird. Still, the music and Parton's vocal prowess are in top form on Jolene, and "I Will Always Love You" is one of her best performances (which is saying a lot). Like it or loath it, Jolene offers a fascinating snapshot of an era in transition, and captures Parton at the top of her game.

Esoteric Antenna is delighted to announce the release of the wonderful new studio album by Djabe & Steve Hackett; "BACK TO SARDINIA". In 2016 the celebrated Hungarian group DJABE and acclaimed solo musician and former Genesis guitarist STEVE HACKETT spent a few days on the magnificent island of Sardinia. Near the Nostra Signore di Tergu cathedral they built a temporary recording studio in the priest's house. The recordings went well, the artists were deeply inspired by the surroundings. The 3-day long improvised session was put into shape by Tamás Barabás, who later in Budapest produced a whole album from the multitrack tapes to create the album Life Is A Journey - The Sardinia Tapes.
Issued in 2017 the album was greeted enthusiastically by fans and was acclaimed critically. Three years on from those initial recordings, DJABE returned to Sardinia once again and recorded some newly improvised sessions. They worked at the same location and recorded onto 24 track analogue tape. STEVE HACKETT later completed his parts in Budapest, before the mixing period, as his summer schedule did not allow free time to share the fresh Sardinian air with his DJABE friends. The final result is again unique.

Quote:
English label BBE started the Strange Games and Things series, and it became their most popular sets. The unmixed portions of this set were previously sold separately. This three-CD set compiles the unmixed discs and adds a mix. At the time of this release, no American company would ever think to offer something so substantial without tons of filler and the same tracks making uncalled-for appearances. While the songs here are great, the star of the show is Brooklyn, NY producer/remixer DJ Spinna. This set not only shows off his turntable prowess, but the Rain Man-like recall of the rare mostly '70s to '80s R&B/jazz songs that are mostly midtempo and sensual. The best remixing comes when the integrity of the original is not tampered with. It also helps to keep the changes daring while retaining the essence of what made a song special. These are lessons DJ Spinna has no trouble with on Strange Games and Things. What makes DJ Spinna stand out is his quirkiness and great ear. Dee Dee Sharp's "Easy Money" leads into Johnny Bristol's "If I Can't Stop You" so well it's humorous. What he does to Eddie Kendricks' "Girl You Need a Change of Mind" and Donald Byrd's "Wind Parade" is nothing short of amazing. Strange Games and Things is an all but perfect set featuring classic, hard-to-find tracks and DJ Spinna's deft and definitive skills. ~ Jason Elias
