Quote:
In 1815, barely eighteen years old and filled with enthusiasm, Franz Schubert ventured into writing his first sonata for piano. As a form, the sonata was seeing a marked decline in the early nineteenth century. But Schubert was honing his craft, and writing sonatas was part of both a creative process and an exercise in compositional skills. In this first sonata, in the key of E Major and catalogued as D 157, Schubert makes use of features that may mirror the concerns with technical dexterity that were pervasive at the time: the first movement, brilliant in character, opens with arpeggios and scales, but the entire structure in strict sonata form is characterized by a keen curiosity in exploring different technical devices. The second movement opens with a melody of lyrical simplicity that foreshadows some of the composer's later inspirations, eventually gaining polyphonic complexity in its development. The third and last movement, a Menuet and Trio in the key of B Major, re-proposes the brilliance of the first movement, but leaves us wondering whether a fourth movement was planned, not only because a closing rondo may be expected, but also because of the unusual use of the dominant key to close the sonata.
To this first attempt, pianist Giuseppe Bruno juxtaposes what is considered Schubert's last work - the Sonata in B-flat Major, D 960. A series of public performances in 1828 had brought Schubert greater recognition and financial stability, and as a result he worked feverishly to complete a large body of music, including three large-scale sonatas for piano, the symphonies Nos. 9 and 10, the Fantasie in F Minor for piano four-hands, and the String Quintet in C Major. Composed between the spring and fall of that year, the Sonata in B-flat Major features four movements centered on the main key, with a deviation to C-sharp minor in the Andante movement. The work was published posthumously ten years later, but for decades it remained underappreciated, chiefly because of its proportions and structural openness (the opening movement, much as other works written in that period, was particularly criticized for its meandering modulatory episodes). It was only in the twentieth century that the work was given the relevance it deserves, guaranteeing Schubert's immortality.
Italian pianist Giuseppe Bruno continues his exploration of Schubert's complete piano works in this recording, captured at the Saletta Acustica 'Eric James', Italy, by four Brüel & Kjaer microphones under the assistance of engineer Alessandro Simonetto.

Esoteric Recordings are proud to announce the release of a newly re-mastered edition of the classic 1978 album by Gong member GILLI SMYTH, "Mother". Comprised of recordings dating as far back as 1972 (some featuring Gong), "Mother" is arguably one of the finest albums in the wider Gong family. Described as "A psychedelic, spacey invocation of motherhood, an examination of gender roles and reincarnation", the album was mostly created in Mallorca by Gilli Smyth's then-partner and Gong visionary, Daveid Allen, who also played on the album. The album also saw guest appearances from saxophonist Didier Malherbe, bassist Christian Tristch and drummer Pip Pyle among others. Featuring the customary Daevid Allen touch of imaginative edits and sound collages, "Mother" is a joy from beginning to end. This new, official release has been newly re-mastered and includes a booklet with liner notes by Gong archivist and expert Jonny Greene.

Ragna Schirmer (Piano)
Quote:
This complete traversal of the keyboard suites of Handel (or, this being a German release, Händel) isn't for those who believe in harpsichord performance of Baroque keyboard works. German pianist Ragna Schirmer says in a booklet interview that "I try to sense what Handel wanted to express in the suites and to bring it out on a modern piano," and she uses a good deal of pedal, especially in the Preludes, more than in her recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations. If you're down with such an approach, give Ragna Schirmer a try in Handel, where the competition isn't quite as thick as it is with Bach. Schirmer's is a pianistic conception, but that doesn't mean it wanders all over the map; it's consistently thought through. Schirmer generally makes one movement, often the one marked Allegro rather than one of the dance movements, into the energy center of the entire suite. You could start with the Suite for keyboard in E minor, HWV 429 (disc 3, tracks 9-15) to get an idea. The opening Allegro is built up to a peak of intensity by means of dynamics and articulation: the notes are held longer and longer, running into each other by the movement's end with the effect of communicating a sort of ecstasy in the manner of Glenn Gould. The dances are more srhythmically traightforward. Schirmer applies a good deal of improvisation and ornamentation to the preludes and to repeats in many of the dances. The end result is that each suite takes on its own shape, and that Schirmer delivers performances that accord with her idea of Handel's keyboard music as quasi-improvisatory in nature. Nicely recorded and indicative of long engagement with the music, even if it's not for everybody.
