The album is inspired by the creative, destructive, and life-sustaining forces of water as depicted in the spiritual wisdom and poetry of this ancient Norse rune, and while creating the music, Helpling immersed himself in this monumental idea of an all-encompassing ocean.
David has an illustrious history of creating lush synth-laden music, but on RUNE he has turned to only guitars and a custom rig to directly and honestly explore a new level of ambient expression, and while the recognizable sound of Helpling's classic whirlpooling guitar still swirls at the heart of RUNE, most listeners will forget that the entire album was created without the use of keyboards, synthesizers or computer-based sound generators once they are submerged in the lush organic soundscapes. The layers of detail, order, and space create an immersive, honest and meaningful music that results in so much more than just another ambient guitar offering. The compositions - emotional and cinematic in scale - stand on their own, rewarding the listener with music, melody, a powerful sound, and heartfelt performance that is truly wondrous and magical.

The late piano sonatas of Ludwig van Beethoven are monuments in the literature, and most listeners would likely agree that they sound most impressive on a modern-day grand piano, which can supply all the volume, weight, and sonority they demand. However, Alexei Lubimov has performed the Sonatas, Opp. 109, 110, and 111, on an Alois Graff pianoforte, built in 1828, an authentic instrument from Beethoven's period. The results are not quite as tinny or small-voiced as might be expected from a vintage pianoforte, but fuller and rounder in soft passages, and the instrument only acquires a jangly tone at the loudest dynamics. Lubimov's interpretations are thoughtful and unhurried, and the care he lavishes on the slow movements is to be admired. But he must have felt the need to be a little cautious playing the Allegros and Prestos, because he never thunders or slams his way through, and his sixteenth notes are very clearly articulated with a surprisingly delicate touch. This album will appeal most to the historically inclined, who will want to have an approximation of what Beethoven's contemporaries might have heard. Fortunately for listeners who want their Beethoven played on bigger modern instruments, the majority of recordings of the piano sonatas fill that need. Outhere's sound is highly resonant, thanks to the live acoustics of the United Mennonite Church, Haarlem.

Following two highly praised recordings for Naïve of music by Georges Onslow and the Second Viennese School, the Quatuor Diotima's new recording presents three major compositions of 20th century American chamber music. They are Different Trains by Steve Reich (with a tape recorded by Diotima themselves), Samuel Barber's Quartet op.11, which includes the original version of his famous 'Adagio', and George Crumb's Black Angels.
Founded by graduates of the Paris and Lyon conservatoires, the Diotima Quartet is a favoured partner of many contemporary composers including Helmut Lachenmann, Brian Ferneyhough, and Toshio Hosokawa. It regularly commissions new pieces from such composers as Emmanuel Nunes and James Dillon, but by no means neglects the classic string quartet repertoire, paying particular attention to the late quartets of Beethoven, French music, and the music of the early twentieth century.
The quartet's first recording of music by Lachenmann and Nono was awarded a Diapason d'Or in 2004 in the 'Discovery' category. Its discography includes the two Janacek quartets and Schoenberg's Concerto for Quartet and Orchestra for the label Kairos, and an album with Thomas Larcher on ECM. The Quatuor Diotima's recordings in recent years of quartets by Georges Onslow (V5200) and music of the Second Viennese School (V5240) for Naive have both been highly praised by reviewers.
