Bridging the spaces between the Paris and Chicago scenes, Moving Cities brings together the best of both worlds and is emblematic of a new, utterly modern jazz going through a true aesthetic revolution. Moving Cities started as a live laboratory set up by Berjeaut and McCraven; it echoes the recent evolution of international metropolises constantly torn between individualism and collective endeavors, in a disrupted geography. In today's musical landscape, there is a strong push to reassess and redefine musical genres. Incorporating all kinds of influences has become a driving force, and jazz, like other genres, is now experiencing an explosion of its aesthetic boundaries. It has moved away from its ponderous legacy and now fully channels the spirit of the times - as it once used to. Unarguably Antoine Berjeaut, Makaya McCraven, Junius Paul and Julien Lourau are, each in their own way, a major contribution to the work-in-progress that jazz is today. Gathered for this new project, they have challenged themselves and gone beyond conventional jazz idioms and structures, in the best way possible: instinctively, as members of an energetic and remarkably creative ensemble led by Berjeaut and McCraven. Moving Cities conjures up an ever-expanding universe ruled by immediacy and tension, while always allowing for collective inspiration. The album conveys the poetry of transformed and dismembered cities, whose inhabitants are in constant search of meaning. Hyper-connected standardized cities desperately missing horizontality.

What sets apart the budget compilations on the Synergy label is their sound. Each track is remastered using a trademark process. The liner notes are workmanlike but offer helpful information to the novice (though there is no personnel listed). The material here comes from the fevered pitch of bebop's birth and covers the years 1946-48. Some of the classics on this collection are "Relaxin at Camarillo," "Yardbird Suite," "Parker's Mood," "Chasin the Bird," and "Moose the Mooche." For those seeking to have just a bit of Bird in their respective CD collections, this is a nice place to start.~Thom Jurek

After nearly a decade of active involvement in Seattle's music scenes, tubist and composer Jon Hansen set out to make a record with some of his favorite musicians in the city playing music that was collaboratively created and captured some of the energy of being a twenty something in Seattle in the 2010s before his move to Switzerland.
Some of the music was fairly written out and planned, but most of it was actually arrived at through a process of improvising multiple takes of each musician and then choosing the most inspired parts that seemed to work best together. This process could be seen as befitting for music made in and about a city whose inhabitants are perennially chided for their passivity and lack of commitment, but those traits could also be euphemized as allowing for spontaneity, inspiration and magic. Wink wink.
The album features many mainstays of Seattle's music scene that Jon played with over the years in various groups and configurations. The forceful and energetic trombone sound heard throughout the album is that of Jason Cressey (True Loves, Monophonics, Superkrewe, Odesza, Macklemore); the wonderful trumpeter Raymond Larsen (Tyrant Lizard, The Sky Is A Suitcase, Chemical Clock) plays on "Konfitüre", "I'm Not Sure What I'm Supposed To Say", "Brassman Starship, P.I"., "Last Day", and "Love Each Other"; "Brass Major" and "Uetliberg" are adorned by the beautiful trumpet playing of Scott Morning (Polyrhythmics, True Loves); Seattle drum guru D'vonne Lewis (Industrial Revelation, Limited Edition, Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra, Macklemore, Digable Planets), contributed "I Told You" and "Love Each Other"; the incredible drummer Ehssan Karimi (Ayron Jones, Low Cut Connie, McTuff, Thao and the Get Down Stay Down, Good Quiver) laid the foundation of "Konfitüre", "I'm Not Sure What I'm Supposed To Say", "Brassman Starship, P.I", and "Last Day"; Elliot Gray (Good Quiver, The Fabulous Party Boys) played piano to form the basis of the track "Freshly Dads Club", and also co-produced it with Jon, making the beat together; and the rich viola and violin sounds of the fantastic Rachel Nesvig can be heard on "Love Each Other", and Steven Bell added his lovely vibraphone tones to "Uetliberg".
Recorded at STUDIO ZAM in Seattle, WA, USA, and mixed and mastered at Zamhüüsli in Adliswil, Switzerland.

Joey Sommerville commands the stage with his imposing appearance and the clear sound of his trumpet. His motto: " If you aren't touching the listener's soul, then you aren't really playing music. Soul communication is the key."
He started his solo career with the debut album Ride To This (2002), a 14 song collection of cutting-edge, progressive instrumental R&B and smooth jazz. His sophomore album was Like You Mean It (2008), an iconic tour de force and not available anymore. Last year he showed up with his third project, the Getdown Club.
His new album shines with star musicians from the scene as Marion Meadows, Bob Baldwin, Eric Essix, Alex Lattimore, Najee, Jeff Lorber and Dwight Sills. Joey has written most of the tracks together with the featured artists.
On Make The Spot Hot Joey Sommerville offers everything, what makes music crispy and enthralling. Contemporary horns in the style we like since Tom Browne's Funkin' For Jamaica and Latrese Bush's overwhelming voice.
With Swag featuring Marion Meadows (sax) and Bob Baldwin (keys) he keeps us energized. Joey does not need to hide behind Herb Alpert. With Con Sabor he throws a pinch of Latin jazz mixed with Salsa picante in the ring. On And On is designed for the dance floor. Angel Grant lends her sexy vocals.
America's Got Talent singer, Xavier Lewis shines on Love In Stereo. A new Luther Vandross? The slow paced Solomon's Throne showcases Joey's jazzy handling of his trumpet. Perfectly timed and the mood in a nutshell. On I'm Home he chooses a smoky tuned muted trumpet in combination with a blithe flugelhorn. The easy going Latin tingued Just Let Go takes reminiscene of Herb's Tijuana Brass. A real jewel is soloist Alex Lattimore, who sings the Latin swing with verve. This time Najee is spellbinding on magic flute.
Flip It is a fine collaboration of Sommerville and Ryan Whitehead. The whole band performs very poignantly in good contemporary jazz tradition. Primitive Cool shows exellency in smooth jazz pairing Joey Sommerville and Jeff Lorber. Jeff is always a garant for top quality.
For all lovers of the trumpet sound is no way around on this album. Joey sets with The Getdown Club the reference for the new decade.
