„It's a cold, cold world out there for what's considered 'traditional' R&B. We dwell in a social media-driven society that lessens attention spans and compels folks to 'sweep and delete' if the jam doesn't gel in record time or feature a fly vessel to convey it. To stay in the mix, artists are having to walk a tenuous tightrope, carrying their skills in one hand and enough sophistication in the other to maintain their appeal with both classic and the contemporary fans.
Durrell Babbs, AKA Tank, has actually embodied his stage name, thanks to his ability to endure the chaos and fend off competition with the various weapons in his artistic arsenal (lyrics, production, film cameos, etc.). Two albums away from his turbulent collabo with Tyrese and Ginuwine, Three Kings, and nearly ten years since 2007's smash set, Sex Love & Pain, Tank returns with Sex, Love & Pain II, an updated continuation of the former with twists that will be appreciated or annoying, depending on the demographic receiving it.
Released weeks after Tank's 40th birthday, SL&PII reflects a man well-aware of his strengths and comfort zones: with The Underdogs back behind the boards, Tank can pour on the romantic sweetness, tug on those heartstrings for another chance or drop a "make-up sex" itinerary so explicit that the toes curl and fog the windows fog up. His vocals remain as full-bodied as the trademark physique, displaying the same raw intensity that he poured into 2001's "Maybe I Deserve" and this set's most convincing tracks. There's the "can-I-get-a-do-over" ballad, "Better For You" ("all she asked for was occasional roses, that romance drug given in doses"), the breathless Valentine's Day-ready anthem, "Already In Love," a duet featuring Boyz II Men's Shawn Stockman, and "Him Her Them," an echoing, anguished plea with modern metaphors that finds Tank begging the love of his life to play the winning hand he's dealt her instead of scrambling the deck for a new one: "How you gon' jump out the window, with no place to land/how you gon' do a sold-out show, without your number one fan?"
Before fans get to the "Love" portion, however, they'll have to navigate a dizzying array of hip-hop cameos, splashes of auto-tune, expletives galore and subject matter one would sooner expect from a newly-emancipated 'young buck' rather than a husband and father rapidly approaching middle age. Sex Love & Pain was not only more nuanced, it also allowed Tank to perform in solo splendor as he celebrated---or decried---the intricacies of adult relationships ("Wedding Song" anyone?) without the cliched detours featuring 'the club' and activities therein (pouring shots, poppin' bottles,lap dances, etc.).
"#BDAY" is tailor-made for VIP but pleasant enough, featuring Chris Brown, Sage The Gemini and Tank's own protege Siya, but the catchy beats anchoring "I Love Ya" are soon overwhelmed by "pay-for-play" imagery ("How did you do this, you a professional/how did you do this to get this to where you wanna go"), rampant usage of 'the n-word' and a Yo Gotti verse so vulgar that ears will get singed. Perversions and profanities aside, if a track isn't crammed to critical mass with the latest Twitter hashtag handles ("So Cold," "Relationship Goals") or detailed descriptions of his sexual swagger ("F***in Wit Me") Tank is bragging about what a freak he has ("She With The $***") or causally counting off random women in his phone as "H*s" and "b****es" in what's supposed to be construed as a love song-----one sampling a Patti Labelle classic at that ("You Don't Know").
For some, SL&PII will be welcomed with affection and enthusiasm---- Tank, after all, is a heaping helping of sexual chocolate who could probably sing words from an Xbox operation manual and make the ladies swoon. The album's production value is also apparent and the additional rap flourishes will likely garner him more attention from the 25 and below set. What his more traditional fans may still yearn for, however, is the quality we all likely took for granted 'way back in the day': an emphasis on the 'love' rather than everything else." This disc, Vol. 4 four of Singphoniker's five-volume collection of the complete part-songs for male voices, may be the weakest in the series. All the others have one or more indisputable masterpieces on them. Even Vol. 1, with its half-dozen drinking songs, and Vol. 2, with its half-dozen composition exercises, still have a few masterpieces. But while Vol. 4 has no composition exercises and few drinking songs, it has the lowest number of masterpieces and the highest number of nearly unknown Schubert songs. But there are still Schubert songs and so great a composer of songs was Schubert that even his least-known songs are often still wonderful. Schlachtlied (D. 912), is a major-keyed march, but an extremely effective major-keyed march. Jünglingswonne (D. 983) is a simple tune extolling German manhood, but it is a lovely tune. And in these superb performances by Singphoniker, even the least of Schubert's part-songs sound lovely. The German ensemble has a sweet but not cloying sound, with warm melodies, rounded harmonies, and an acute sense of balance and rhythm. In its performances, all of Schubert's part-songs from the greatest to the least sound magnificent.

'A Requiem' is a jazz and poetry commission commemorating the end of The First World War and subsequent conflicts across a century. It's an exciting and ambitious commission of new music that brings together the creative imagination of poet Josie Moon and the dynamic composition talents of Alan Barnes and Pat McCarthy.
The music is arranged by Alan for a stellar line-up of jazz musicians: bassist Dave Green, saxophonists Gilad Atzmon and Dean Masser, trombonist Mark Nightingale, drummer Sebastiaan De Krom and trumpeter Neil Yates. It is a bold and challenging work that examines the impact of conflict on individuals across a century, moving but ultimately uplifting and soulful work, which invites the audience to both remember the history of conflict and resolve to do better in the future Alan Barnes is a prolific international performer, composer, arranger, bandleader and touring soloist. He is best known for his work on clarinet, alto and baritone sax, where he combines a formidable virtuosity with a musical expression and collaborative spirit that have few peers. Pat McCarthy is regarded as one of the country's leading jazz guitar players and also an outstanding composer and educator.
Author, poet, composer, musician and singer, the very talented Josie Moon brings as much to the reading of her work as to the writing of it. Her poetry brings to life and compliments the music of 'A Requiem'.

Although some of the other volumes in the Singphoniker's collection of Schubert's complete part-songs for male voices have greater masterpieces -- Vol. 1's Nachthelle (D. 892) and Vol. 5's Gesang der Geister über den Wasser (D. 714) -- Vol. 3 has the highest number of good songs and the lowest number of composition exercises, which may make it the most easily appealing volume. Starting with the glorious Wein und Liebe (D. 901) and ending with the exquisite Grab und Mond (D. 893), there are hardly any songs in this collection that are not first-rate Schubert. Even the lesser-known songs like the sweet serenade "Leise, leise lasst uns singen" (D. 635) and the tenderly yearning Wehmut (D. 825) sound magnificent in Singphoniker's sweetly expressive performances. Indeed, while there are few recordings of these works to compete with Singphoniker's, comparison with the recordings by Jane Glover or John Eliot Gardiner always find in favor of Singphoniker. This is a wonderful and beautiful collection.

Guitarist John F. Klaver is one of the newer stars in the Dutch blues (rock) company. Finger-fast, flowing solos on the semi-acoustic electric guitar are his trademark. In 2011 he won the Dutch Blues Challenge with his band and in 2015 the Blues Award for best blues guitarist in the Netherlands. The John F. Klaver Band also accompanied blues (rock) greats such as Johnny Winter, Dana Fuchs and Matt Schofield. The Klaver from Boxmeer started playing the guitar at the age of eleven, inspired by Gary Moore, Robben Ford and Jimi Hendrix, and later took music theory lessons at the University of the Pacific in the US. He then went to the Amsterdam Conservatory, where he was taught by Jesse van Ruller, Martijn van Iterson and Eef Albers. Today he is a professional musician and music teacher. For this album he could appeal to a good number of great professional musicians from the blues and jazz scene. The acclaimed British guitarist-singer Ian Siegal cooperates with Little By Little, best known in the version of Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi. Saxophonist Ephraim Trujillo is known from, among others, The Ploctones (by Anton Goudsmit).
On this indeed warm and organic sounding album, especially Klaver himself sings and he does great. Furthermore, with his smooth guitar playing he shows why he won all those prizes. In Move On Up, the band sticks to the version such as the fantastic Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio that previously brought. The Prince by Larry Carlton is nicely funky and rhythmic and has a complicated structure. That is how we arrived at the makke of this album; own work here lacks a little of its own face. Klaver and the other musicians are great, the recording quality is excellent, but there is not much color outside the lines. Perhaps that is not their ambition and the blues audience may not be bothered by it either.

Not being down with the Utah scene, I hung out in cyberspace with 'Triggers and Slips' a while and first stop was the Small Lake City Concert Series and a version of Alice in Chains' 'Rooster'. Morman descendent Morgan Snow takes a pinch of that grungy flavour and the 'Slips' sneeze dirty country vibes all over it, resulting in kind of a cross between Son Volt and Pearl Jam. It's a virus that one can only imagine is going to spread rapidly as the rest of the album hits our shelves, venues and, yes, online platforms of choice.
To dig further into the ethos of 'Triggers and Slips' reveals that in fact the band leadership, songwriting and roots are very much intertwined with John Davies. Davies is vocal wingman, multi-instrumentalist and owner of a delightfully simple name considering his trade. Here is a band that carry themselves like men and play their music with redoubtable authority. Don't let that fool you that it's not fun though. Good production can sound very spontaneous when done right. The title track is all the proof you need of that, as a slow distorted intro gives way to honky-tonk piano, Hammond organ and duelling guitars, fading in and out over an outlaw country shuffle while Snow, for all the world a 21st Century Waylon, holds court as master of ceremonies. "We've been pushing our luck/We're bound to fuck up." his voice is a finely tuned country music weapon in peak condition. There are elements of border country in 'Natchez Trace', the dusty desert fandango style strongly vying with the rock n roll of Uncle Sam for prominence. 'Old Friends', which first appeared on the band's 2012 self-titled EP is a bromance reunion epic, replete with spectacular fiddle and toe-tapping piano solo work by the band's honky tonkin' electro dj, the 'Time Chimp' - Greg Midgley. It's been dragged from the gutter, polished to a shining star of a song and given centre stage on 'The Stranger'. The combination of country and slow bluesy Jeff Beck overtones on 'I'm Not Your Baby' hints at the broad horizons that 'Triggers And Slips' have embraced while Snow clings to his love of grunge with that overhaul of 'Rooster'.
Morgan Snow was a drug and alcohol therapist when he stumbled on the name for his band, Triggers and Slips was the heading of some notes on a group session one of his co-workers was leading. Much of this album concentrates, in the great traditions, on matters of the heart and of the soul. Described as songs that will "hit you in the gut" the blend of skilful delivery, first-class production and songcraft of the highest standard makes 'The Stranger' a game-changer for these men of Utah.

When an ensemble seeks to record a complete body of work, there will inevitably be some works of lesser quality among the masterpieces. In the second volume of the Singphoniker's collection of Schubert's complete part-songs for male voices, there are the masterpieces -- the sublime early version of Gesang der Geister über den Wasser (D. 538) and the transcendent choral version of Sehnsucht (D. 656) -- and then there are the composition exercises that Schubert wrote for Salieri when he was in his early teens. And although the Singphoniker diligently blends its sweet voices in beautiful harmony and performs all of the songs with tender expressivity and a devotion verging on adulation, there is only so much it can do with Schubert's six settings of Schiller's Elysium, brilliant as composition exercises but less than entertaining as concert pieces. But when the work is a masterpiece, as in the deeply religious Salve Regina (D. 811) or the lovely ode to spring An den Frühling (D. 338), the Singphoniker's performances are as beautiful as the works themselves. Although one might wish to skip the composition exercises, the masterpieces on this recording are all one might wish for.

This generous serving of 28 tracks focuses on Watson's mid-1950s recordings (both released and unissued) for RPM, throwing in some songs by singers Devonia Williams, Jeannie Barnes, and Crodella de Milo (on whose songs he was accompanist); a couple of 1957-58 singles for Keen; and some previously unavailable tracks he recorded for Johnny Otis, probably dating from the late 1950s and early 1960s. This is worthwhile for fans of Watson in particular as well as fans of the R&B-blues crossover sound of the '50s in general. It's a patchy set, however, in which Watson and his associates try on several different styles for size, but not always with memorable success. Watson's stinging guitar is satisfying on cuts like "Hot Little Mama," and one can tell that it was probably played at a volume that challenged the limitations of 1950s engineering technology; but his playing is sometimes less to the fore in the arrangement than is desirable. For the most part, the material is adequate but not exciting. Sometimes it follows the lead of Watson's avowed hero Ray Charles, while other times it is shaded with doo wop and New Orleans R&B. On the Keen tracks he ventures into Larry Willliams-styled rock; on "Gangster of Love" (one of the standouts on the disc), he accomplishes swinging and boasting first-person-narrative blues. The tunes certainly aren't as impressive as the instrumental skills of Watson and the RPM/Modern house bands overseen by Maxwell Davis. Among the tracks, one will find the 1956 single "Three Hours Past Midnight" - a slow blues that, according to the liner notes, the teenaged Frank Zappa considered "his number one record which had a big influence on his own guitar playing."
