Ann-Margret's RCA Victor debut album, And Here She Is..., didn't get much attention in 1961, but she did better with her bluesy single "I Just Don't Understand," which peaked in the Top 20 in September. That set up this, her second solo LP, which featured "I Just Don't Understand," and like it was recorded partially in Nashville under the aegis of Chet Atkins and Dick Pierce. The two naturally brought a slight country feel to some of the tracks, notably the remakes of Don Gibson's 1958 hit "Oh, Lonesome Me" and the 1960-1961 hit "My Last Date (With You)" (aka "Last Date"). But the closest approximation of the sound was the kind of country-inflected pop/rock being pursued by Elvis Presley around the same time, which made a rendition of Presley's first major hit, "Heartbreak Hotel," an appropriate choice. At 20, Ann-Margret was an effective singer, if something of a chameleon, seeming to adopt a different persona for each number. She was at her most seductive singing Otis Blackwell's "Slowly," and she came on like a Latin fireball on "Fever," but was demure on the singles-chart entry "What Am I Supposed to Do" and ingenuously winning on "Moon River." RCA Victor appears to have been hoping it had found a distaff Presley, and it's possible Ann-Margret might have justified such a hope if her film acting career hadn't quickly outpaced her recording career; by the time this album was released, her movie debut, Pocketful of Miracles, had been out for several months and State Fair, which would establish her as a redheaded bombshell, was just getting into theaters. (She was still a mousy brunette on the album cover.) On the Way Up was an appropriate title, but records would soon take a back seat to other career goals.

For this CD, "Modern Music Spectrum", I had two wishes: to record exclusively original modern music for accordion, and also to record something with my dear friend, and amazing clarinetist, Giovanni Punzi. For the solo repertoire, I chose four of the most important works ever written for classical accordion. They explore most of the possibilities of the instrument, and they are dark, mysterious and intense. Regarding my collaboration with Giovanni, we decided to play one of the best works written for accordion and clarinet, where the fusion of these two instruments is quite unique, flashy and colourful. All these pieces give the opportunity to the listener to know some of the most idiomatic works written for accordion. I hope you will enjoy this musical journey.

In addition to being one of the world's premier blues imprints, Chicago-based Chess Records presented some of rock & roll's earliest participants. Chess Rhythm & Roll (1994) is a five-plus hour celebration of essential proto-rockers cut between 1947 and 1967. The four-CD assemblage is a companion to the Chess Blues (1992) box set and picks up during the label's formative days when their repertoire was expanding to a greater audience beyond the realm of R&B. Boasting a total of 99 selections, this collection far exceeds your average "oldies" package, charting the course from ensembles including the jumpin' and jivin' Five Blazes -- whose "Chicago Boogie" commences the festivities -- to the plethora of talent who fused their own unique performance styles to create the foundation of practically every note of popular music that followed. It goes without saying that prolific pioneers Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry have significant spin time. However, it is the attention given to lesser-known artists and "one-hit wonders" that makes the anthology required listening for enthusiasts of all stripes and respective tastes. While the track list tells the story completely and perhaps more succinctly, it only intimates the impact of platters such as Jackie Brenston's "Rocket 88," Willie Mabon's "I Don't Know," Sugar Boy Crawford's "Jock-A-Mo," the Moonglows' "Sincerely," Clarence "Frogman" Henry's "Ain't Got No Home," Clifton Chenier's "The Big Wheel," Dale Hawkins' "Suzie-Q," the Monotones' "Book of Love," Tommy Tucker's "High Heel Sneakers" and scores of others found here. Before the artists made names for themselves on Atlantic Records, Chess likewise introduced listeners to Eddie Floyd and Sir Mack Rice, who were bandmates in the Falcons ("This Heart of Mine"), not to mention future Motown superstars Smokey Robinson & the Miracles ("All I Want Is You") and the Four Tops ("Country Girl") -- all of whom got their start on Chess. Slipped in among the classics are no less than 39 rarities, 14 of which are debuted in this omnibus. The sonics are superior, as is the accompanying 64-page booklet, housing reams of photos as well as thorough credits and fact-filled song-by-song annotations. To call Chess Rhythm & Roll essential is an understatement by any measure of the word.

An esteemed conductor who has worked with most of the major orchestras and made more than 300 recordings, José Serebrier is also a prolific composer. He became established at an early age with Leopold Stokowski giving the world première of his Symphony No. 1, when he was only 17 years old. He studied composition with Martinu and Copland, while also learning conducting from Doráti, Monteux and Stokowski, who named the 22-year old Serebrier his associate conductor. This dual career has flourished ever since, as demonstrated by this disc on which Serebrier conducts the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra in some of his most recent works. These include the Symphonic BACH Variations for piano and orchestra in which Alexandre Kantorow, winner of the 2019 Tchaikovsky competition, shines in the solo part. Newly recorded material is combined with the previously released Flute Concerto - the only work on the disc not conducted by Serebrier himself - and two tango-inspired shorter pieces. For Serebrier, these and the recent Last Tango before Sunrise form a kind of return to his youth in Uruguay, where he was born.

After making a name for himself in his native Australia, Josh Rennie-Hynes upped sticks from his home in Queensland and - upon being granted the impressive Nashville Songwriters Residency grant by the Australian Council for the Arts - made Music City USA his permanent base and where he would record his third solo record. The opening lines of the album (from the track 'Standing Still') feel like Rennie-Hynes is speaking to himself of the importance of pushing his creative and geological boundaries: "Oh my love you won't / Ever find the things you want / If you don't trust yourself once in a while."
Trust himself he did, moving to Nashville with very limited connections personally and professionally, but it's a move that has paid off. This is an album solidly influenced by his new place of residence. Produced by guitarist Alex Munoz - who has worked with the likes of Margo Price - and featuring drummer Allen Jones and bassist Christopher Griffiths (both of whom are regulars in Will Hoge's band) - the tone, unsurprisingly, shifts effortlessly between country and rock, with the harmonica making a few welcome appearances.
'Stay', written about the recounting of an LSD trip, is floaty and dreamlike: "The sky is falling down / And I don't know where I am / Just a thousand different things / All scattered by the wind.". 'Ghosts' features lush sounding strings accompanying lyrics that tell of regret over his past actions in a relationship: "There's things I never told you / Things I always hid." 'High Road' see him shaking off such insecurities and confidently exclaiming: "I'm taking the high road out of here", as he leaves a relationship in the dust. 'Home to You' is the perfect album closer, Rennie-Hynes's voice creating beautiful harmonies with Erin Rae's.
Although some tracks can fall into the forgettable category, with this strong collection of Nashville crafted songs, it feels like Rennie-Hynes has found the path he was meant to be on, and it's with excitement we await to see where that will lead him next.

Jordan Rakei announces new album "Origin" released 14 June on Ninja Tune, plus worldwide headline tour including Roundhouse in London. Preorder the album and stream new single 'Say Something' now. Soulful, intimate and expansive all at once, Jordan Rakei's third album, "Origin", cuts straight to the point, in every sense of the word. The melodies are brighter, the sound is bigger and the vision behind it more finely-tuned. Switching up from the highly personal and intimate portrait he painted with 2017's "Wallflower", which was a way of grappling with his experience of anxiety and introversion, "Origin" is overtly inspired by dystopian visions of our future - notably Charlie Brooker's Black Mirror, Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale and David Lynch's Twin Peaks. "I'm worried that we're losing a sense of connection," explains Jordan, with many of the album lyrics exploring technological growth, and how it affects our sense of humanity. For example, new single 'Say Something' is "about speaking up for what you believe in", a call to arms for future humans to stand up against the AI systems which govern a now-dystopian world. It follows recent single 'Mind's Eye', which envisions a future world where malfunctioning tech implanted in the human body has flooded the users mind with projections of chaos. He meditates daily, something he adopted partly in response to his issues with anxiety, and something which has shaped his worldview and informed his writing and production process.
