The relationship between composers and performers has been a key element in musical creation. This is the case of the Spanish composer JoaquÃ*n Rodrigo (Sagunto, Valencia, 1901 - Madrid, 1999), who was acquainted with many prominent guitarists of his time (e.g. Emilio Pujol, Andrés Segovia, Narciso Yepes, Regino Sainz de la Maza, Pepe Romero, to name but a few). As a result of these interactions, one of the most internationally known solo guitar repertoires was created, thus making the guitar thoroughly accepted as a solo instrument with orchestra, with his C oncierto de Aranjuez (1939), FantasÃ*a para un gentilhombre (1954), and Concierto madrigal (1966) being some of the best known. These works for guitar and orchestra are the most well-known of his catalogue and JoaquÃ*n Rodrigo owes his fame to them. However, in this album, the protagonists are other works, which, despite being less well-known, are no less relevant and have equally exalted the Spanish guitar repertoire.

Johann Kaspar Mertz's duets are unusual for combining a guitar with normal string length and tuning and a smaller instrument with higher tuning, the terz guitar. The rare chemistry of the two instruments reaches high degrees of virtuosity in The Rage but it is Mertz's colorful depiction of scenes and moods, as in the impressionistic Boat Trip on the Traunsee, the Schubertian Serenade and the atmospheric Going to Vespers which commands our attention. The three elegiac Funeral Laments are amongst Mertz's finest and most expressive pieces.

The brilliant young guitarist Kyuhee Park, winner of the 2010 Agustin Barrios and 2012 Alhambra International Guitar competitions, has crafted a recital that focuses on a sequence of sonatas and a quartet of evocative character pieces. The three Scarlatti sonatas exude dance, lyricism and virtuosity respectively, whilst Anton Diabelli's engaging Sonata in A, heard in Julian Bream's arrangement, is one of the relatively few extended guitar works of the Classical period. Lennox Berkeley's Sonatina is both elegant and complex. After Malats' popular encore piece Serenata Espanola and Barrios' sublime Un Sueno en la Floresta and Chopin-inspired Vals, the recital concludes with Lopez's richly varied Impresiones y paisajes, inspired by Lorca's first book.
