It is powerful, insistent, creative and joyous music anchored by an amazingly tight rhythm section that grooves like hell.

Monkeyjunk's fifth record is a consistent offering of straight-ahead blues with a couple new additions to the trio's sound. The band don't stray too far from their comfort zone on Time to Roll, but dynamic instrumentals and heartfelt choruses keep the album compelling throughout its 10 tracks.
Time to Roll is the first Monkeyjunk album that features electric bass, with low-end lines on previous records coming from Steve Marriner's baritone guitar. It's a welcome addition to the album, which also features the band's first acoustic tune, a swampy delta blues track called "Undertaker Blues." Despite layered guitars and various harmonies, the album retains its definition through some sharp production and mixing. Marriner's harmonica playing is particularly cutting, with standout performances on the title track and "Pray For Rain."
The album is littered with toe-tapping grooves and some impressive licks from guitarist Tony D, but it's bogged down by a few too many blues tropes, like the hackneyed ballad "Can't Call You Baby" and clich d lyrics of cheating spouses and hittin' the road. Yet while Time to Roll may not forge any new ground, it's still an enjoyable record that fans won't want to miss.

Exactly two years ago, the Eva Klesse Quartet released their second album Obenland, establishing its status on the European jazz scene. Excellent reviews followed, as well as invitations to festivals and international concert tours, which took the band to Asia and Central and South America. JazzThing described Obenland as "wild, romantic, elegiac and tantalising," while the Weser Kurier picked up on the band's "impressively precise interaction". The FAZ wrote: "The pieces develop fluently, and typical boundaries between composition and improvisation blur imperceptibly. The Eva Klesse Quartet's jazz is rich in interesting melodies and harmonies, attracting different kinds of listeners, yet is far removed from the mainstream." And now begins the third chapter in this artistic success story: miniature - ten songs for chamber jazz quartet. The title of the new album indicates the band's aesthetic direction this time. While Obenland captivated the listener with its extended tracks and featured sweeping dynamics and wide arcs, the new album is more intimate and reduced. What has not changed, however, is the impelling interaction of different approaches to playing and the members' different characters, which add significantly to the quartet's appeal. The fellow performers attentively listen and give space to each other while showing a keen intuition for storytelling without words. The characteristic sound of the Eva Klesse Quartet on miniatures is more detailed and transparent than ever. Many subtleties of chamber music, clear or cleverly forking compositions and balanced improvisations make 50 minutes pass quickly. Conceptual ideas and the resulting focus show the ensemble's convincing artistic development. The band's depth of expression produces a musical narrative that can confidently exist in an international environment. Such music will delight not only long-time followers of jazz, but also recruit new aficionados in the future.

This 2008 Hyperion disc called A Mozart Album programmed and performed by English pianist Stephen Hough is a model recital. The disc starts with pure Mozart, the Fantasia in C minor, K. 475, and the Sonata in B flat major K. 333, then moves to not so pure Mozart, a Fantasia in C minor, K. 396, begun by Mozart but finished after his death by Maximillian Stadler. After that, there are three Mozartian virtuoso pastiches, Johann Baptist Cramer's Hommage Ã* Mozart and Ignaz Friedman's Menuetto in D major from the Divertimento for strings and horns, K. 334, plus Hough's own Three Mozart Transformations (after Poulenc): the Menuet, K. 1; Klavierstücke, K. 333; and Sehnsucht nach dem Frühling, K. 596. And the disc closes with a super virtuoso expansion by Ferruccio Busoni of a virtuoso work by Franz Liszt called Fantasia on Two Themes from Mozart's Marriage of Figaro. Each piece has its own appeal, but taken together, the program is ideally balanced between poise and propulsion, charm and vivacity, and musicality and virtuosity.
Hough, of course, is a stupendous pianist with a bravura technique, an enormous tone, and a sensitive touch. But would one have expected him to be a stupendous Mozart pianist? Wouldn't his power and passionate perforce have overwhelmed the elegant and graceful music of the Austrian composer? In the event, no, though Hough does stack the deck in his favor. His pure Mozart is bigger, tougher Mozart, and Hough plays it with as much force as necessary but without overloading it. Just as fine are his Mozartian pastiches with their dancing sense of tempo and slightly secco touch. But best of all is his performance of Busoni's version of Liszt's Figaro Fantasia. Here Hough can turn it loose, ramping up the muscle and juicing up the virtuosity until the music fairly combusts at the climax. And yet, such is Hough's innate sense of taste that his performance never oversteps into empty bombast. Captured in vibrantly present digital sound, A Mozart Album demands to be heard by anyone who loves great piano playing.

Mars First is Geoff Graham's first release on Ehse records and his first work created strictly as a solo artist. The album was given intentional creative limitations, and was conceived, written and recorded in a period of 6 weeks. As a result, scrutiny and ambition give way to truth-via-spontaneity and receptiveness. Inspired by Frank Herbert's Dune, the album is an ambient meditation on life and non-life in the desert. Pulsing synthesizers, swaying polyrhythms and weeping bass lines invite the listener to leave behind a world of words to enter a less busy one. The non-human sphere and civilization vie for attention, all culminating in the final track Raven, in which Graham asserts himself as a singer. Mars First functions as both a complete musical gesture and as a premonition for the more pop-inspired album Survivors, out on Ehse Records in early 2020.
