In the first few pages of Peter Guralnick's superb book Sweet Soul Music: Rhythm & Blues and the Southern Dream of Freedom, the author describes Dan Penn as "the renegade white hero of this book," and Penn has been widely and justly celebrated by many music historians as one of the great songwriters to emerge from the 1960s soul music boom, penning classic tunes for Aretha Franklin, Percy Sledge, James Carr, Otis Redding, James & Bobby Purify, and many more. Penn is less widely acclaimed as a great soul singer, largely because so few people have heard his work; while Guralnick and other writers have spoken rhapsodically of the publishing demos Penn cut in the '60s, Penn put out only four obscure singles prior to making his misbegotten debut album in 1973, and his body of recorded work remains elusive. Thankfully, Ace Records has finally made it possible for fans to hear the recordings that so impressed Guralnick; The Fame Recordings includes 24 numbers Penn recorded at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama between 1964 and 1966, all but one of which has never before been released. While a few of these songs would be major hits for other artists, nearly all of them sound like winners, and unlike most songwriters demo-ing their material, Penn's performances are raw, passionate, full-bodied, and soulful; he was a white kid from the deep south in love with the sound of Ray Charles and Bobby "Blue" Bland, and on the best cuts here, he goes past conjuring an approximation of their sound, revealing a voice and style all his own that suggests he influenced the singers who would cut these songs almost as much as they influenced him. While Penn could mimic other artists - "I'm Living Good" is an uncanny Sam Cooke lift, and "Take a Good Look" finds Penn channeling Otis Redding -- he puts in enough force and sheer belief to make these performances his own no matter how well you may already know these songs, and with a number of legendary session men backing him up, these recordings are remarkably accomplished, slightly rough but full of the sound of musicians thrilled by the act of creation. (And one can hear more than a bit of what Penn taught Alex Chilton when he produced the Box Tops' original string of hits, transforming Chilton's British Invasion instincts into some of the most soulful pop of the '60s.) The Fame Recordings is a valuable lost chapter in the history of Southern Soul, and confirms the legend that Dan Penn's publishing demos were more than just talk - anyone with a taste for vintage R&B owes it to himself to give this a listen.

This release was originally part of a two-disc album of vocal and instrumental pieces by Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre issued in 1986. The music by this gifted contemporary of François Couperin is enjoying a renaissance, and justifiably, for it is inventive and affecting. Sopranos Isabelle Poulenard and Sophie Boulin are fluent in the somewhat rarefied idiom of the 'cantate française' and the result is delicately pleasing. Four of the cantatas on the disc are taken from Jacquet's first collection of Cantates françaises sur des sujets tirés de l'écriture, published in 1708, and dedicated to Louis XIV. The fifth work, Jephté, comes from a second collection issued in 1711 and is distinct from the other cantatas on the disc in being written for two voices rather than one. The texts in each case were provided by her younger contemporary Antoine Houdar de La Motte, who is chiefly remembered for his libretti for operas by Campra, Destouches and Marais. Though each piece is inspired by an Old Testament story, Jacquet's music is neither austere nor discernibly 'sacré', often embracing the lighter, airier style galant. The writing is accomplished, full of fresh ideas and never sinks into routine. Singing and playing are not entirely devoid of little insecurities but the recital is well worth getting to know.

The Piano Quartet by much-admired Latvian composer Peteris Vasks is one of his longest and most imposing chamber works. Unfolding with inexorable expressive force, it utilises dance-like motifs and folk-inflected themes throughout. The pieces by Lithuanian composer Arvydas Malcys form a cohesive sequence akin to a three-movement piano quartet in which specific sound effects, emotional power and colourful textures are in perfect alignment.

Country-pop singer Ilse DeLange emerged as one of the most successful Dutch artists of her generation with her chart-topping 1998 debut World of Hurt. Born May 13, 1977, in Almelo, Holland, DeLange spent much of her childhood competing in local talent contests, eventually forming a country-inspired duo with guitarist Joop Liefland -- in 1994 they performed at the Dutch Country Music Awards -- but their momentum soon stalled and a year later the partnership dissolved. DeLange next surfaced in the short-lived pop group Wij, issuing the 1996 single "De Oorlog Meegemaakt." Two years later, she joined the country band Cash on Delivery, and with them traveled to Nashville to record an LP with producer Barry Beckett. The completed album, World of Hurt, was issued in the Netherlands as a DeLange solo effort, going on to sell close to 500,000 copies and topping the Dutch charts; the single "I'm Not So Tough" also cracked the Top 40, and she claimed Best Female Singer honors at the annual Edison Awards as well as the TMF Award for Best New Artist. The stopgap live release Dear John followed in 1999, and a year later, DeLange issued her second studio album, Livin' on Love. More rock-oriented than its predecessor, the LP peaked at number five, notching a Top 40 hit via the title cut. DeLange returned to the U.S. to record 2003's Clean Up, which returned the singer to the top of the Dutch charts and yielded her highest-charting single to date with "Before You Let Me Go," a collaboration with the pop band Kane; she also won her second Edison Award as Best Female Singer. After teaming with Italian singer Zucchero for the hit duet "Blue," DeLange began work with American pop producer Patrick Leonard on 2006's chart-topping The Great Escape, which generated the hits "The Lonely One" and "I Love You."
IncredibleDeLange's hot streak continued in 2008 with Incredible, which earned a quintuple platinum certification in the Netherlands partially on the strength of the hit single "Miracle." After 2009's Live in Ahoy, she released Next to Me in 2010, which became her fourth album in a row to reach number one in the Dutch charts. Eye of the Hurricane continued that streak into 2012.
Gravel & DustDeLange's attention turned to television in 2013. She joined The Voice of Holland as a coach in its fourth season and stayed with the show through the next two years before moving to The Voice Kids and then signing with The Voice Senior in 2018. As she worked on television, DeLange was also part of the country-pop group the Common Linnets, who released albums in 2014 and 2015. After a six-year hiatus from solo recording, DeLange returned in 2018 with a self-titled album. Gravel & Dust followed in 2019.

In the past year alone, he's released music under the auspices of his "choral thrash" metal band Coral Cross and his R&B-influenced project REMYNYS and produced for people like Sky Ferreira and Tamaryn. And now, he's announcing a new LP called Gloss Coma - 002.
Although Gloss Coma - 002 is technically the follow-up to last year's Here Lies solo album, its title marks it as the sequel to Gloss Coma - 001, Elbrecht's collaborative 2013 EP with Chairlift's Caroline Polachek. Billed as "a magical realist torture pop LP," it'll feature Sky Ferreira, Samantha Urbani, Geneva Jacuzzi, Tim Koh, Drab Majesty, Molina, and SRSQ.
