For an obscure one-shot act, Turnquist Remedy had a reasonably well-established career and quite a solid pedigree. The band formed in Los Angeles and was active from one end of California to the other between late 1968 and late 1971. Its core was the quartet of Michael Woods (vocals, guitar), Murphy Scarnecchia (lead guitar), Scott Harder (bass), and John Maggi (drums), but at the time they recorded their sole LP in 1970, the group had been augmented by session ace Larry Knechtel, who had just recently finished contributing the indelible piano part to Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water." Iowa by the Sea was recorded in Hollywood with former New Christy Minstrel Barry Kane and legendary engineer Al Schmitt (everyone from Sam Cooke to Jefferson Airplane) behind the boards. (In fact, the band was one of the first acts signed to Schmitt's nascent MCA subsidiary, Pentagram.) Despite its good reputation, the album didn't make much of a dent coming out of the already oversaturated L.A. pop market, and Turnquist Remedy would never record again, though the band did continue playing live for a year or so before ultimately packing it in. In addition to his duties as one of the most in-demand session pianists, Knechtel would soon thereafter join the lineup of Bread, contributing significantly to that group's hitmaking sound. Woods followed Knechtel into session work on the '70s El Lay scene and, in 1978, would join as a full member a resurgent America (at the recommendation of Harder, who was then the band's road manager) on second guitar, continuing with the group through all its incarnations over the next several decades. John Maggi would go on to play with String Cheese, which recorded an LP on Wooden Nickel, a label best known for releasing the earliest albums by Styx.

One of mainstream-minded Concord's few so-called crossover projects -- hence the separate label -- this isn't a very successful venture, a hodgepodge of this and that, recorded with a flat commercial sheen. Misleadingly, the CD opens with Flora singing the blues on the Cheathams' "Sweet Baby Blues," upon which Airto plays straight traps. But while "Garimpo" gets the album back on the Latin track, the energy and quirky inventiveness of the Moreiras is mostly out to lunch, buried under the in-your-face sound and dissipated among a variety of instrumental lineups. "Jump" does get some sharp Brazilian funk going, and the title track has some of the old Airto craziness, but the rest is not going to light too many fires.~Richard S. Ginell

On June 11, 2019, it was revealed that Mark Ronson will be the film's executive music producer. Head of Fox Music Danielle Diego expresssed excitement at working with Ronson, stating that "his unique blend of vintage soul and funk exceptionally captures the soul of [the] film". On November 22, 2019, the film's single, "Then There Were Two", performed by Ronson and Anderson .Paak, was released. Two days later, an extended play album, titled Mark Ronson Presents the Music of Spies in Disguise and featuring five new songs written for the film, as well Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock's "It Takes Two", was announced. ASC continues to dissect the past with this stunning live recording from 1998 of two of the worlds finest bass players: Barre Phillips and Teppo Hauta-Aho. The recording was made of the concert Beyond the Bars by Barre & Teppo in the wooden church inside the Kerava Juvenile Prison in Finland on June the 10th, 1998. It starts with a poetic introduction by the governor of the prison and jazz fan - Markku Salo. Roots band Birds of Chicago formed in 2012 as a collaboration between Chicago's JT Nero (JT & the Clouds) and Vancouver's Allison Russell (Po' Girl). Although both singer/songwriters were actively leading their own projects, their combined efforts were convincing enough to make a go of it and they set about recording their debut. Though a talented songwriter in her own right, a big part of the Birds of Chicago sound came from the material Nero had written specifically for Russell to interpret, and it was their combined voices that won over fans on 2012's self-titled Birds of Chicago LP. Mixing folk, mountain gospel, soul, and rock, the two bandleaders and a revolving cast of players became a well-seasoned touring act, and in 2013 delivered the concert album Live from Space. To make their follow-up studio album, they enlisted Grammy-winning producer Joe Henry and spent 2015 recording Real Midnight, which was released early the following year.
Real Midnight is the second long player from roots combo Birds of Chicago and, with its poignant songwriting and richly realized production -- courtesy of Grammy-winner Joe Henry -- it raises the band's profile considerably. The sweet and sour vocal mix of Allison Russell and JT Nero remains at the center of their sound, which continues to tread the dusty Americana roads of country, soul, folk, and rock. There's a newfound depth in their songs and tasteful arrangements that rely less on crowd-pleasing roots rockers and more on understated, subtly built mood pieces that tug at the heartstrings. From the bittersweet nostalgia of "Remember Wild Horses" to the spooky a cappella rave-up of "Barley" and the moody country-soul of the title track, this is the sound of a band coming into its own.

Daniel Lopatin returns with his latest score for the A24/The Safdie Brothers' film, 'Uncut Gems' out internationally December 13th, 2019 on Warp Records the same day as the film hits theatres.
