    Description:

This book examines writing that has been created in isolation and confinement, and it explores the stories, characters, and situations that have arisen from these states throughout history. It offers a deeper understanding of how others have found inspiration, purpose, and clarity in these difficult and challenging conditions.
By traversing the narratives of writers, wanderers, mariners, prisoners, recluses, and soldiers, this book offers writers and readers a chance to re-think the parameters of their own circumstances. Exploring a broad range of themes, from writing during a pandemic (COVID-19), travel writing, writing from incarceration, and writing within war and conflict zones, each chapter will look at historical contexts as well as contemporary examples within these themes to demonstrate the rich history and current relevance of writing during confinement and isolation. The book also contains tips and exercises to help develop writing skills during restrictive circumstances.
This is a valuable resource for scholars seeking to observe how writing has developed through various themes of isolation in the past, as well as students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels of creative writing, communication studies, and journalism seeking to learn through lived experiences how to hone their writing during challenging times.

    epub | 8.43 MB | English | Isbn:‎ 1682477436 | Author: Gene Eric Salecker | Year: 2022

    Description:

The Sultana was a sidewheel Mississippi steamboat carrying almost two thousand recently-released Union prisoners-of-war back north at the end of the Civil War. At 2:00 a.m. on April 27, 1865, when the boat was seven miles above Memphis, her boilers exploded. Almost 1,200 people perished in the worst maritime disaster in United States history. Gene Eric Salecker covers this disaster in detail and dispels the many myths that have been connected to the Sultana for too long. Almost every author who has written about the Sultana has relied on the words of a few survivors or referred to the works of previous authors to get their story. Advancing the scholarship, the author has visited the National Archives in Washington, DC to comb through the handwritten transcripts of the three investigative bodies that looked into the disaster or poured over the handwritten testimony from the court-martial trial of Capt. Frederic Speed, the only person tried for the overcrowding of the vessel. In...

    pdf | 16.61 MB | English | Isbn:‎ 978-0813066981 | Author: Tekla Mecsn?ber | Year: 2021

    Description:

Rewriting Joyce's Europe sheds light on how the text and physical design of James Joyce's two most challenging works, Ulysses and Finnegans Wake, reflect changes that transformed Europe between World Wars I and II. Looking beyond the commonly studied Irish historical context of these works, Tekla Mecsn?ber calls for more attention to their place among broader cultural and political processes of the interwar era.
Published in 1922 and 1939, Ulysses and Finnegans Wake display Joyce's keen interest in naming, language choice, and visual aspects of writing. Mecsn?ber shows the connections between these literary explorations and the real-world remapping of national borders that was often accompanied by the imposition of new place-names, languages, and alphabets. In addition to drawing on extensive research in newspaper archives as well as genetic criticism, Mecsn?ber provides the first comprehensive analysis of meanings suggested by the typographic design of early editions of Joyce's texts.
Mecsn?ber argues that Joyce's fascination with the visual nature of writing not only shows up as a motif in his books but also can be seen in the writer's active role within European and North American print culture as he influenced the design of his published works. This illuminating study highlights the enduring―and often surprising―political stakes in choices regarding the use and visual representation of languages.

    pdf | 3.6 MB | English | Isbn:‎ B08PQ1GGND | Author: Jason Miller | Year: 2021

    Description:

In both politics and art in recent decades, there has been a dramatic shift in emphasis on representation of identity. Liberal ideals of universality and individuality have given way to a concern with the visibility and recognition of underrepresented groups. Modernist and postmodernist celebrations of disruption and subversion have been challenged by the view that representation is integral to social change. Despite this convergence, neither political nor aesthetic theory has given much attention to the increasingly central role of art in debates and struggles over cultural identity in the public sphere.

Connecting Hegelian aesthetics with contemporary cultural politics, Jason Miller argues that both the aesthetic and political value of art are found in the reflexive self-awareness that artistic representation enables. The significance of art in modern life is that it shows us both the particular element in humanity as well as the human element in particularity. Just as Hegel asks us to acknowledge how different historical and cultural contexts produce radically different experiences of art, identity-based art calls on its audiences to situate themselves in relation to perspectives and experiences potentially quite remote-or even inaccessible-from their own. Miller offers a timely response to questions such as: How does contemporary art's politics of perception contest liberal notions of deliberative politics? How does the cultural identity of the artist relate to the representations of cultural identity in their work? How do we understand and evaluate identity-based art aesthetically?

Discussing a wide range of works of art and popular culture-from Antigone to Do the Right Thing and The Wire -this book develops a new conceptual framework for understanding the representation of cultural identity that affirms art's capacity to effect social change.

    pdf | 7.63 MB | English | Isbn:‎ B09X6P1L2G | Author: Michael D. Wood | Year: 2022

    Description:

This proceedings volume results from the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on 'Biomarkers of Radiation in the Environment: Robust Tools for Risk Assessment (BRITE)'. The BRITE workshop discussed insights from cancer research, epigenetics, non-human and human risk assessment, since many of the state-of-the-art biomarkers being developed for humans deserve consideration for environmental applications and vice versa. Sessions were very wide-ranging covering methods, mechanisms, cross disciplinary application and regulation.
The chapters in this book have been grouped into five major themes that were covered by the BRITE workshop:
    ? Techniques for biomarker development
    ? Low-dose effect mechanisms
    ? Biomarkers for risk evaluation
    ? Biomarkers in wildlife
    ? Biomarker use and responses
Each chapter has been written independently and reflects the views of the chapter author(s). Therefore, the readers can form their own balanced view of the different perspectives on biomarkers of radiation in the environment. Given the breadth of topics covered and the state-of-the-art perspectives shared by leading experts in their respective fields, this book should form a valuable resource for anyone with an interest in how biomarkers can be used to improve our understanding of radiation in the environment and its potential impacts.

    pdf | 37.15 MB | English | Isbn:‎ B09T3J7BV7 | Author: Shu-Qing Yang | Year: 2022

    Description:

Coastal Reservoir Technology and Applications presents the analyses showing that the world is not running out of water, but water is running out of river mouths-we need to work to harness this resource. Compared with inland water storages and desalination technology, coastal reservoirs are a nature-based water solution without disturbing the environment. This book mainly answers the questions of what the coastal reservoir technology is, where we should construct coastal reservoirs, and how to supply sufficient, high-quality and affordable water to the world with minimum environmental/social impacts. Chapter 1 reviews modes of water resources development in the history along with current problems and reasons. Chapter 2 discusses the definition of coastal reservoirs, its classifications and applications, and the SPP/downstream water management strategy. Other chapters analyse water crisis in every continent, as well as their water solutions. The possible coastal reservoir for each major river is suggested as well.
Without freshwater, no one can survive. Likewise, without sufficient, high-quality and affordable freshwater, no community can achieve sustainable development. However, water is also a killer when it is too much (floods), too dirty (pollution), and too turbid. Different from other books, this resource shows how to solve these water problems. Coastal reservoirs and SPP strategy are suggested to develop floodwater in a safe way in coastal and inland regions, respectively. Solution of water-food-energy-ecosystem nexus needs a paradigm shift from upstream to downstream water management, i.e., from mountainous dams to coastal reservoirs, which conserves the precious, clean freshwater in seawater environment.
[*][*] Provides an analysis of every large river in the world to help users determine the feasibility of using a coastal reservoir in each location[*] Presents a global coverage, including case studies where this technology has already been implemented[*] Authored by a world expert on coastal reservoirs, with several patents in the area
