TTC - Real Zen for Real Life
MP4 | Video: h264, 1280x720 | Audio: AAC, 44.1 KHz, 2 Ch

What do you think of when you hear the word "Zen"? Many Westerners may associate Zen with the counterculture of the 1960s and 70s, while others may associate it with today's hipster culture. Many use the word to simply mean laid back and relaxed.
But what does Zen really mean? Zen is a school of Buddhism and a rigorous spiritual discipline. To understand what Zen is really about, it is vital not only to study its profound philosophical teachings, but also to engage in the practice of Zen. The word "Zen" means meditation, and Zen meditation is a practice of "clearing the heart-mind." For Zen, an open mind entails an open heart, and this open heart-mind is the source of both creativity and compassion.
Professor Bret W. Davis, Professor of Philosophy and the T. J. Higgins, S.J., Chair in Philosophy at Loyola University Maryland, has created a highly accessible introduction to the philosophical teachings as well as the meditative practice of Zen with Real Zen for Real Life. Applying the intellectual acumen of a philosophy professor, the erudition of an academic scholar, and the spiritual experience of a practitioner and teacher of Zen, this course reflects the push and pull between Eastern and Western traditions and cultures with the goal of making the study and practice of Zen more accessible and engaging to all viewers.
Over the course of 24 lessons-including meditation checkups at the end of eight of the lessons-you will learn both what Zen has traditionally meant for East Asians and what it can mean for contemporary Westerners. Prepare to be challenged as Professor Davis asks you to set aside your preconceptions in order to open yourselves to what Zen masters who lived in the past and in distant lands have to teach you. You will especially need to be open to the possibility that Zen may be able to teach you about yourself. This course aims to challenge and inspire you, both intellectually and personally.
Practicing What You Preach
Laden with personal connections, Professor Davis consciously participates in the process of transplanting the authentic Eastern teachings of Zen into a Western cultural context. His goal is not just to teach you about Zen; he wants you to learn from Zen.
This course is an invitation to engage in the practice of Zen as well as to learn about its philosophical articulations and implications. It aims to teach you about real Zen, and how to relate it to your real life. And no matter what your cultural and religious background, you will discover how Zen can enhance your life and enable you to reflect more clearly and deeply on your accustomed beliefs and values. Through Zen practice, you can awaken a state of mindfulness-of being in the present moment-that can help you attain what Zen masters call the "everyday even mind" or a state of unperturbed attentiveness in the midst of all life's ups and downs, twists and turns.
One important concept you will examine and learn to embody is karma. Often associated with retribution or the concept of "what comes around goes around," with Professor Davis, you will actually engage with this concept not as an outside force that the universe uses to right wrongs, but as an inner guide of the self. As you will see, karma is about becoming the person you want to be by practicing your own values and integrating healthy, positive habits that shape your everyday experience of the world, with all its inevitable complications and setbacks.
Change Comes from Within
A Zen master goes to buy a hot dog on the streets of New York, and he says to the vendor, "Make me one with everything." Jokes aside, what does it really mean, according to Zen Buddhism, to become one with everything, or to realize the oneness of everything? What it does not mean is to lose one's individuality or uniqueness, to melt into a homogenous blob. For Zen, "non-duality" is about interconnectedness. . It is about realizing our intimate co-existence with other people and with the natural environment.
Jokes aside, what does it really mean, according to Zen Buddhism, to become one with everything, or to realize the oneness of everything?
Zen is often not very well understood in the West. While there are hundreds of books, websites, and guides that claim to showcase the 'Zen' of "something" (golf, cooking, pets, etc.), this course digs into the realities of Zen. As you get a thorough explanation of the main philosophies of Zen, you will learn how its lessons are applicable to all modern Westerners, not just monastics and other committed Zen practitioners. For example, Professor Davis stresses that Zen Buddhist philosophy can deepen your understanding of Christianity as well as your connection to other people and the world. He compares Zen with other schools of Buddhism, and with other religions as well
Over the course of 24 lessons, you'll see how the pivotal role of meditation distinguishes Zen even among other schools of Buddhism. With Professor Davis's guidance, you'll examine the Ten Oxherding Pictures for an overview of the path of Zen as well as get an in-depth introduction to Zen poetry and art. You'll engage with the sayings and writings of generations of Zen masters and practitioners. You'll learn how to meditate in an authentic and effective manner, with a focus on how to optimize your posture and breathing techniques, understand what walking meditation is, dive into the benefits of chanting in meditation, and learn how to find a Zen center or community that is right for you.
Living, Dying, and Everything in Between
Zen Buddhism is about living fully engaged in the moment. It is about being able to understand yourself in connection with the world around you, about maintaining your own peace of mind while also bringing peace to others. The Way of Zen does not lead to floating above or flying away from everyday life-it's not about otherworldly mysticism or altered states of consciousness. Rather, it is a matter of putting your feet on the ground and awakening, step by step, to the present moment, to the wondrousness of mundane matters and the meaningfulness of everyday errands.
Life is unpredictable. Often, the only thing you have control over in a given situation is how you face the struggles and triumphs you are dealt. Whether you decide it should be the primary guiding system of your life, or you simply want to integrate its many useful teachings in the ways that best work for you, Zen can provide insight into yourself and the world around you. As both a philosophical framework and a real-world practice, Zen can give you the tools to stay calm and centered when it feels like everything is in turmoil. It can also help you approach the inevitable changes and transitions of life, including the most inevitable of them all: death. By applying the Way of Zen in your life, you can live in such a way that even death becomes another stage of your journey rather than something to be feared.
By collecting and connecting wisdom from across the ages in Real Zen for Real Life, Professor Davis offers guidance to anyone who wants to achieve inner peace and spread outer calm across the many stages of your life and all the many changes-both expected and unexpected-you will encounter along the way. As you will discover, the journey is the destination.

TTC - The Middle Ages around the World

The Middle Ages cover the 1,000-year period from the fall of the Roman Empire (roughly 400 CE) to the beginning of the Renaissance (1400 CE). Contrary to its earlier designation as the "Dark Ages," the Middle Ages was a time of profound historical shifts and transformations, that in many ways would shape the modern world. Far from being a "dark" or backward epoch, this extraordinary period reverberates with discoveries, innovations, events, and historical processes that are integral to the world we know now
The calendars we use today, and the ways in which we think about time and its measurement, date to the Middle Ages, in the medieval creation of the Christian, Jewish, and Islamic calendars. Core features of the global civilization we know now came into being in the Middle Ages, such as agricultural and technological innovations that made huge populations possible. Likewise, numerous other inventions that are essential to our world date from the Middle Ages, such as mechanical clocks, suspension bridges, gunpowder, paper, compasses, odometers, and the banking system.
Then there is the medieval mathematical revolution, which started in the Islamic world and transformed Europe, that gave us the number zero, negative numbers, decimals, fractions, and algebra. Though quite different from the solidity of mathematics, the ethos of romantic love, which permeates our world from literature to popular culture and movies, was also a creation of the Middle Ages-a "game of love" of the nobility that was handed down through influential literary works such as the Romance of the Rose and The Tale of Genji.
And the remarkable intellectual expansion of the High Middle Ages, which produced a global movement toward education and empirical observation, led to Western universities and set the stage for both the Renaissance and the modern scientific revolution.
In The Middle Ages around the World, celebrated medieval scholar Professor Joyce E. Salisbury leads you on a sumptuous tour of this revolutionary time, highlighting the many seminal developments of the medieval era that illuminate our understanding of the world. As a key point of this course, the extraordinary historical currents and advances of the Middle Ages unfolded not only in the West, but across the globe, from Europe, Africa, and the Middle East to Asia, the Americas, and beyond. This course offers a breathtaking panorama of world history, revealing the astonishing scope of the advances and innovations of the medieval era that remain relevant to us today.
Travel across a World-Shaping Epoch
The Middle Ages around the World reveals the vital developments between the era of classical antiquity and the Renaissance, filling in essential stages in the unfolding of human cultures and the creation of the world we know. Early on, you'll take account of the political disruptions and the fall of ancient empires that began the Middle Ages, as well as the structures of commerce and global trade that so defined these times. From there, you'll take a detailed and multi-level look at the major features and events of the Middle Ages, as they played out in numerous cultures across the globe.
You'll visit magnificent medieval cities from Africa and the Byzantine Empire to China; delve into the globe-spanning events of the Age of Faith; chart the growth and reordering of civilizations; and grasp the economic foundations of medieval societies.
You'll also reckon with medieval engineering, science, and technology, and dig into treasures of architecture, literature, and art. You'll investigate the features of daily living, across the social classes, medieval exploration and travel, and the wonders of medieval medicine, mathematics, and philosophy. And you'll track the range of upheavals, warfare, and disasters that brought the Middle Ages to a close.
To know this remarkable period-with its world-changing innovations, human drama, and cultural contributions-is to deeply enrich your understanding of human civilization and history.
The Blooming of Civilization
As you discover the historical dimensions and legacy of the Middle Ages, you'll delve into fascinating subject matter, such as
The Fall and Rebuilding of Empires. Chart the epic story of upheavals and strife that marked the start of the Middle Ages, as the Chinese Han dynasty, India's Gupta Empire, and the Roman Empire fell, leading to a new order under the Frankish emperor, Charlemagne, in Northern Europe, the Abbasid Caliphate in Bagdad, the Tang Dynasty in China, and the Mongol Empire, among others.
Expansion, Prosperity, and Networks of Trade. Grasp the innovations in areas such as engineering, agriculture, metallurgy, and energy sources that drove civilizations from Europe to China, bringing population growth, wealth, and global connectivity. Map the great trading networks that undergirded medieval civilization, from the fabled Silk Road to the trading routes within Europe, Southeast Asia, and Africa.
The Age of Faith. The Middle Ages was a time of vast religious expansion, diversity, and controversy. Witness the currents of thought in the ensuing events, such as the rise of Islam and the advent of Islamic rule; the drama and disaster of the Crusades; Buddhism's spread throughout Southeast Asia, China, and Japan; and the internal schisms within Islam, Buddhism, and Christianity.
Medieval Treasures of Art and Architecture. Explore the triumphs of medieval architecture, from European castles and Islamic palaces to gothic cathedrals and the sublime religious monuments of Indonesia, Cambodia, and China; delve into the extraordinary medieval literary works that still move us, from the great heroic epics to the literature of romantic love.
The Phenomenon of Travel. Learn how travel became both an idea and an ideal in the medieval world; visualize the amazing sea voyages of the Vikings and the Polynesians; see how the Mongols traversed the Eurasian continent, building a vast empire; and travel Asia and the Far East in the company of legendary travelers, Marco Polo, Ibn Battuta, and Lady Nijo.
The Medieval Americas. Witness the ingenuity in farming, hydraulics, building, and astronomy that gave us the New World's majestic and intriguing cultures; study the economies, religions, and monumental architecture of the Maya in Mexico, the Chaco Canyon peoples in North America, the Chimu civilization in Peru, and the forest peoples of the Amazon.
Struggles and Disasters of the Late Middle Ages. Track the calamities of climate change, the Black Death, religious upheavals, warfare, and the disintegration of empires that brought the Middle Ages to a close, accompanied by profound societal changes such as the ending of feudalism, and an emerging worldview that paved the way for the Renaissance.
Experience the Rich Human Drama of These Times
Professor Salisbury brings to the course a phenomenally broad and rich knowledge of the medieval world, plus a flair for revealing the global connections between cultures, peoples, and currents of thought that give the Middle Ages their extraordinary human dimensions.
Among a wealth of memorable details within the lectures, you'll learn about the weaponry and tactics of armored knights, about lifestyle and diet within medieval palaces, and how medieval Muslim physicians performed complex medical operations for cancer and for cataracts of the eyes. And you'll meet some of the era's most remarkable human beings, such as the fabulously wealthy Malian emperor, Mansa Musa; China's Empress Wu Zetian, who boldly promoted Buddhism; the Abbasid Caliph Harun al-Rashid, whose glittering court was the setting for The Arabian Nights; and Japan's beloved poet and travel writer Lady Abutsu.
Crossing many cultures, continents, and 1,000 years of history, The Middle Ages around the World offers you a dazzling journey through an epoch that continues to speak meaningfully to the modern world.
What Will You Learn?

TTC - Electrical Engineering for Everyone
Published 04/2022 MP4 | Video: h264, 1280x720 | Audio: AAC, 44.1 KHz, 2 Ch
Genre: eLearning | Language: English | Duration: 24 Lessons (12h 36m) | Size: 10.9 GB
So much of our everyday life is tied to electricity. Thanks to electrical energy, we have everything from reliable hot water to life-saving medical equipment. Whether in individual homes and offices or throughout the infrastructure of an entire city, electricity powers every part of our world
Though we are grateful for the reliability of our electrified world, most of us don't understand much about it. Electricity can still seem like the "magic" our ancestors imagined it to be when they saw it in the natural world. But electricity is considerably more amazing than magic, as you'll see in the 24 fascinating lectures of Electrical Engineering for Everyone. With dozens of live demonstrations, along with explanatory graphics and video, Dr. Laura J. Bottomley brings you on the amazing journey of electrical engineering-the discipline that has taken us from the electric lightbulb to interstellar space to artificial intelligence in less than 150 years.
Four Magical Revolutions
In the 18th century (and even earlier), scientists who worked to understand electricity in the lab produced disparate bits and pieces of knowledge with no cohesive theory. It wasn't until the mid-19th century that James Maxwell wrote a series of papers that provided unity for the field. Eventually synthesized into four robust equations, Maxwell revealed the relationships between electricity, magnetism, and light. As Dr. Bottomley clearly shows in this course, all our technological developments since that time-from the first power delivery station to the robots we've sent to other planets-are based on the powerful truths revealed in Maxwell's equations.
Built on Maxwell's equations, the field of electrical engineering has experienced four distinct revolutions in the past 150 years, each of which increased our knowledge of the world around us, improved the quality of life for masses of people, and led to the opportunity for further discoveries. Revolution One brought the transmission of electrical energy with wires, which provided electric power to homes and businesses and produced the telegraph and telephone. Revolution Two brought the transmission of electric energy without wires. This phase started with radio, which led to television, satellites, and other forms of wireless communications. Revolution Three occurred when we learned to control electrons with transistors, which led to electronics and photonics. And Revolution Four produced computers and communication systems to create intelligent applications, including brain-controlled prosthetics, self-driving cars, and advanced robotics.
The Process of Invention
How did all of this happen? How did we move from the absolute certainty that electricity was magic to the ability to build machines that learn from their own successes and failures? The answer involves teams of people working together to solve unique problems, often opening doors to greater challenges and solutions. In this course, you'll learn the fascinating stories of numerous discoveries and inventors, including
Alexander Graham Bell. Although the myth persists, Bell did not make the first telephone call in 1876 by yelling for help from his assistant because he had spilled acid on himself. Bell and Thomas A. Watson had been working together methodically, keep detailed notebooks describing their attempts to improve the telegraph system so that it could send multiple messages simultaneously. In the course of their work, they discovered that speech could be transmitted over a pair of telegraph wires.
Guglielmo Marconi. Did Marconi really invent the radio? Although he demonstrated the capabilities of early radio, that equipment was based on the contributions of Heinrich Hertz and Nikola Tesla, whose development of the Tesla coil led to the radio oscillator.
Jaap Haartsen. Dutch engineer Jaap Haarsten is credited with the development of Bluetooth short-range wireless technology in the 1990s. His design was based on a frequency-hopping technology conceived during World War II by the Austrian-born American actress who went by the stage name Hedy Lamarr.
Seeing Is Believing
Learning about electrons, circuits, batteries, and sensors makes a lot more sense when you can see it all in action-and that's exactly what Electrical Engineering for Everyone provides. Dr. Bottomley's passion for this field comes alive as she demonstrates dozens of concepts, laws, and principles of electrical engineering throughout the course. As you actively see the effects of electrons moving in circuits, magnetic fields, fiber optics, sensors, and more, you will better understand the ways in which electricity and electronics operate in your own life. Some of the demonstrations you will see include
Electromagnetic Fields, demonstrated with the Tesla coil. Although there is no way to see an electromagnetic field itself, we can watch these fields transmit energy to something we can see. Fluorescent bulbs were designed to emit light when they're placed in an electromagnetic field of a certain strength. The Tesla coil creates an electromagnetic field, and you'll see the light in the bulb intensify and fade as the distance to the field increases and decreases.
The Basic Electric Circuit, demonstrated with a lamp. With two wires, you'll see that the filament inside the light bulb completes the circuit as the bulb makes contact on one side with a metal screw and on the other side with a metal button that touches the socket tab when screwed in.
Photonics, demonstrated with optical fiber. Photonics, in which light, as opposed to electricity, is used to carry information, has several advantages over electrical circuits. One of the most significant benefits is that photons stay in the wires/fiber and do not escape out the side. This demo shows that the laser light entering the fiber stays in the fiber, even if the angle of the laser changes or the fiber itself is twisted. This is due to the specific index of refraction of each of the fiber's layers, allowing for total internal reflection.
What comes next in electrical engineering? Although we can't know what will come next any more than Thomas Edison could have envisioned the hundreds of geosynchronous satellites we now rely on for daily communication, the National Academy of Engineering has established 14 "Grand Challenges for Engineering in the 21st Century" whose solutions would benefit all. Some challenges that specifically speak to electrical engineers include making solar energy economical, improving and restoring urban infrastructure, and engineering the tools of scientific discovery, among others.
As electrical engineers tackle these enormous challenges, Maxwell's equations will guide the way, just as they have in the past, along with the vital scientific properties of electricity and magnetism that you will learn for yourself in Electrical Engineering for Everyone.
What Will You Learn?
Discover the four revolutions in electrical engineering
Understand the important differences between "electric" and "electronic"
Learn the significant, scientific properties of electricity and light

Description
THREE COURSE BUNDLE - 10+ HOURS
The first 3 Options Trading Strategies courses are combined to create this bundle. To master the basics of Options, you really need all three courses.
A brief synopsis of the options trading strategies courses are provided below.
LEARN CALL OPTIONS AND PUT OPTIONS, OPTIONS FOUNDATION - TIME DECAY, IMPLIED VOLATILITY, OPTION GREEKS BUYING CALL OPTIONS AND PUT OPTIONS - LIVE TRADES
SECTION I - Call Options
Most people learning Options for the first time face too much jargon and complex language. This options trading strategies course use real-world examples (buying a house) to explain how a Call Option (Section 1) works in real life. This example should make it absolutely clear what a Call Option is in step-by-step details.
SECTION II - Put Options.
The Put Option is the ultimate "protector" of your portfolio, and in this course you can learn how Put Options work. It is the exact opposite of a Call Option. Put Options increase in value when the value of a stock or index drops in price. We define what a Put Option, and just like we did in the Call Option, we consider a real-world example of a Put Option.
SECTION III - Stock and Options combo strategies
In this section, three creative strategies are outlined for Stock investors to combine Options into their portfolio strategies.
? Use Options to buy Stock at prices that are far lower than what the stock is currently trading for
? Use Options to sell Stock at prices that are far higher than what it is currently trading for
? Use Options to hedge a Stock position that you already own
SECTION IV - TIME DECAY
Time decay is a pivotal component of Options strategies. In fact, time decay alone is responsible for the majority of advanced option strategies. In this part of the options trading strategies course, we are going to study the concept in detail. Options are "wasting" assets, and they lose value every day. The buyer gets hurt from time decay and the seller benefits from it. And time decay becomes more exponential as we approach expiry of an Option. It is also the great equalizer between the profiles of a buyer and seller of Options. Time decay is the great equalizer in the risk / reward profiles of buyers and sellers of Options. Several intermediate and advanced strategies are based on selling premium (option sellers) and these positions make a profit due to time decay in the value of these options over a period of time.
SECTION V - IMPLIED VOLATILITY
Implied Volatility is the "wildcard" in Option prices. Ignore it, and you will pay a price. In fact, it's so important we have at least four different varieties - Volatility, Implied Volatility, Historical Volatility, and Future or Expected Volatility. We use the real-world examples to explain the concept of Volatility in simple terms. Then we study how Volatility is quantified in Stocks and Options. And how Volatility finds a back-door to embed itself into Option prices. Implied Volatility considerations are critical when choosing between a buyer and seller profile. We break this complex topic down into simple terms and show you an example of NFLX and CAT options that should make it absolutely clear what this is all about.
SECTION VI - OPTION GREEKS, DELTA, GAMMA, VEGA, THETA
If you're the pilot of an aircraft, the Greeks are your instrument panel. If you don't manage your instrument panel properly, well...you get the picture. Understanding the Greeks are absolutely critical to every Option position. We break this course into easy to understand chapters for all the four Greeks - Delta, the king of all Greeks. Gamma - the silent operator. Theta - every Option seller's dream. And Vega - Watch out for this one.. Most beginners to Options tend to ignore the Greeks. Master the Greeks and you'll shave off months of learning curve. Not to mention, you can then fly your aircraft on "auto-pilot" (with help from the Greeks).
SECTION VII - OPTIONS MARKET STRUCTURE
The Options market has a number of terms that we need to be aware of. Starting with terminology differences like "Long" and "Short", we look at all the details that go into the Options market. We explain the important processes like Exercise and Assignment, as well as things like Expiry series, Bid-Ask spreads, Brokerage and transaction costs and various other details. What is Open Interest and why is it important, and what is the role of a Market Maker. We study the different Order types and which ones are important for the average investor, and which ones make sense in different situations. We also discuss Regulation T Margin as it applies to Options as well as Portfolio margin.
SECTION VIII - BUY A CALL OPTION (CHIPOTLE MEXICAN GRILL)
Buying a Call Option is the most basic of all the Option strategies and is the most efficient strategy to optimize a bullish outlook on a stock. In this options trading strategies course, we take the example of Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) and show how the trade played out. We analyze the rationale behind entering the trade, the risk/reward profile, chart analysis and point of entry, choice of expiry and "moneyness" of the Option, time decay considerations, margin requirements, profit expectations, exit criteria, Greek analysis, its Profit and Loss profile and various other considerations. We provide a 360-degree analysis before trade entry. This is a real trade and over 15 days, and we navigate the trade to its exit point.
SECTION IX - BUYING A PUT OPTION (FXE EURO ETF)
Buying a Put Option serves two purposes - exploit a bearish move in the stock or be the ultimate protector of your stock. In this part of the course, we take the example of the Euro ETF (FXE) and show how the trade played out in about 25 days time. We show you how to "let your winners run" in a controlled manner.
SECTION X - STRATEGY AND OPTIMIZATION
The Option strategy optimization course brings all the 4 Options strategies together. The 4 strategies are comprised of 2 bullish and 2 bearish strategies, but how and when should we choose a particular strategy over the other. We create a helpful "4 strategies box" to distinguish and connect one strategy to the other. Most importantly, what are all the considerations before we choose a strategy. Our choice of strategy depends not only on what the stock is currently doing, but also on various market externalities as well as a few key Option metrics like Implied Volatility. This course also provides a sneak peek into advanced Option topics like the VIX (Fear index"), trade simulation as well as trade adjustment parameters.
SECTION XII - SINGLE OPTION ADJUSTMENTS
This options trading strategies course studies the need for Option adjustments, and why adjustments are as critical to the success of your position as good entry or analysis. We consider all the four basic strategies - the Long Call, Short Call, Long Put, and the Short Put and look at various adjustments to these positions if they get into trouble. Every investor has a "pain point" - this is the point at which they adjust their position. Applying a rigorous approach to this pain point enables investors to control risk while maximizing the opportunity to profit. The course also discusses various details like early adjustments, over-adjusting and adjusting profitable trades as well as the importance of the investor's outlook for the stock when considering adjustments.
This bundle consists of Courses
Course I - Introduction to Options - Learn about Call Options and Put Options is a detailed step-by-step explanation of Options, Call Options and Put Options with theory and practical application with Apple (AAPL) Options
Course II - Options Foundation - Time Decay, Implied Volatility and Options Greeks will complete your theoretical understanding of Options.

When you hear the word "spy," you likely think of suavely dressed heroes driving fast cars, performing daring feats of adventure, and committing crimes the rest of us can't get away with-with maybe time for a stiff drink or two. Cool? Certainly. True to historical reality? Absolutely not.
The world of espionage is shrouded in mystery-even to those in it. But so much of what we think we know about spy craft is rooted in literature and film and drama. Think Ian Fleming's James Bond and John LeCarre's George Smiley. Fictional spies loom large over our conception of covert operations and how they get done. But even though the true nature of espionage is quite different, that doesn't mean history's real spies are any less heroic-or less fascinating.
Consider how integral spies have been in shaping our world, often in ways we can't possibly fathom. They've created governments. They've expanded economies and overthrown monarchies. They've even helped nations avoid catastrophic wars. (They've sometimes enabled them, too.) When it comes to the secret world of espionage, it's fair to say that facts are often better than fiction.
In the nine episodes of The Secret World of Espionage, shine a light into the shadowy world of spy craft with a distinguished panel of historians-including a former intelligence case officer-in search of the secret meeting places, complex codes, stealth observations, and cutting-edge technologies spies have used throughout history. How much does pop culture get wrong about espionage? What traits make for exceptional spies and possible double agents? What happens when intelligence operations fail? Learn why the answers are more intriguing than anything pop culture could come up with.
Learn How Spies Work
The first step in dispelling myths about spies and espionage is learning how spies really work. Throughout these episodes, you'll consider why someone would want to become a spy (or a double agent) in the first place.
Experts have a term for the four most common factors: MICE. Most assets end up working for the Money. When it comes to Ideology, perhaps the spy dislikes the system of government they're spying on. Sometimes, an individual is Compromised into working as a spy (possibly via blackmail). Then there are those who want to fuel their Ego-perhaps they've even seen a lot of spy movies and want to be just like their heroes.
Of course, there are plenty of other skills, strategies, and methodologies involved in successful statecraft. In The Secret World of Espionage, you'll discover
How spies gather different sources of intelligence information, including from other people (known as HUMINT);
How spies exploit the social expectations of their times (including gender) to avoid scrutiny and suspicion;
How spies use 21st-century tech tools to gather and analyze more and more granular information; and even
How spies, unlike many of their fictional counterparts, learn to be "forgettable" while on the job.
Real Stories about Real Spies
Sure, James Bond is a cool spy. But he's not real. The men and women you encounter throughout The Secret World of Espionage, however, are indeed real, and their stories of daring (including close calls and even double-crosses) is enough to pack this series with plenty of adventure and intrigue. A few of the agents you will meet include
Sir Francis Walsingham. The charismatic secretary of Queen Elizabeth I, Walsingham invented the spymaster role in the early modern period, developing new methods and institutions where none had existed before. Walsingham's famous Babington Plot (which led to the death of Mary, Queen of Scots) is thought of by some more as more a provocation than a successful example of statecraft.
Peggy Shippen. For Americans, the name Benedict Arnold is synonymous with betrayal. What many don't know is the role his wife, Peggy Shippen, played in his treachery. Shippen not only introduced Arnold to British spymaster John Andr?, historians have discovered that the love letters between Arnold and Shippen contained coded messages in invisible ink. Shippen was, in essence, Arnold's case officer.
Antoine Rossignol. Rossignol, cryptologist to the Bourbon kings of France, was tasked by Louis XIV with creating an uncrackable cypher. The result, known as The Great Cypher, had two features. First, every message included meaningless symbols to thwart standard analysis. Second, proper names and terms were replaced with code words. The keys to The Great Cypher were lost after the fall of Napoleon-and took 80 years to be recreated.
William Stefanson. Appointed by Winston Churchill as head of MI6, Stefanson was instructed to use any means necessary to persuade the United States to join World War II. Stefanson's solution: an all-out propaganda campaign feeding false information to American intelligence and the American press. By the time Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Americans were ready to join the fight.
Aldridge Ames. In the 1980s, afraid his divorce would bankrupt him, Ames collaborated with the Russians for $50,000 to cover his legal expenses. The Russians estimated that, within the first four years working for them, Ames received $1.8 million (valued at around $5 million today). Alas, what tripped up Ames was what reveals most double agents: unexpected sources of wealth.
With insights from espionage experts including a former senior intelligence analyst (and spy novelist), history professors, and a New York Times bestselling author, The Secret World of Espionage will change the way you think about how intelligence agencies, from MI6 to the CIA, operate both in the shadows and sometimes even in plain sight.
This is, in short, history seen through the eyes of spies.
