Baby Killing Sisters to Be First Women Executed in India

Notorious killer sisters, Renuka Shinde and Seema Gavit who kidnapped and murdered babies and small children, are set to become the first women executed in India. They kidnapped at least 13 children, teaching some to pick pockets and using others to hide their own crimes. When they became too problematic, the children were murdered. Renuka Shinde was a poor teenage mother when she tried to steal a purse during a crowded festival at a temple in India. When she was caught in the act of stealing, Shinde feigned outrage and showed her accusers her young son. Would a thief take their child along, she asked. The crowd at the temple in Pune, southeast of Mumbai, let her go. The experience spawned an idea in Shinde that would lead her and her sister to become India’s most notorious serial killers.

The sisters’ modus operandi was using small children, often toddlers, as diversions to distract the public while one of them was engaged in stealing purses. When in danger of being caught, the other used to throw or bang the child to the ground or any hard surface. The object was to elicit sympathy by manipulating the public’s emotions

Taught by their mother. The sisters themselves were barely adults when they began their killing spree — Gavit was just 15 when she killed her first victim and her older sister was 17. They had been inducted into a life of crime by their mother, Anjana, who taught them how to pick pockets in crowded marketplaces and during religious festivals in small towns throughout Maharashtra, western India.

Bashed his head against a pole. The first kidnapping victim was a one-year-old boy stolen from a homeless woman. If the sisters were caught stealing, one of them would throw the child to the ground. Eventually, the child was hurt so badly he would not stop crying. Prosecutors said Anjana killed the boy by bashing his head against an iron rod. She died in prison at age 50 before she could be tried.

The crime spree. For five years, starting in 1991, the sisters were alleged to have kidnapped 13 children. Their last victim was killed as an act of revenge plotted by their mother against her estranged husband, Seema’s father, who had abandoned her, remarried and had children with his new wife. Shinde and Seema helped kidnap his nine-year-old daughter. Kranti, who was then killed by their mother and dumped in a field. They were arrested when Kranti’s mother voiced her suspicions about her husband’s ex-wife to the police.

A most heinous murder. Sentencing the sisters, Judge G. L. Yedke described the murders as “the most heinous” and said they seemed to have enjoyed killing the children. An appeal court said the women committed the crimes almost casually. “Going into the details of the case, we find no mitigating circumstances against them apart from the fact they are women. Further the nature of their crime and the systematic way in which each child was kidnapped and killed amply demonstrates the depravity of the mind of the appellants,” said the court. “They indulged in criminal activities for a very long period and continued till they were caught by the police. They very cleverly executed plans of kidnapping the children, and the moment they were no longer useful, killed them and threw the dead body at some deserted place.”

The husband's involvement. The court said the sisters were unlikely to reform and would remain a menace to society. Shinde and Gavit were convicted of a series of child murders in 2001 and sentenced to death. They were charged with 13 kidnappings and 10 murders and were found guilty of five killings. They denied the charges. Their lawyer said they were wrongly convicted on the evidence of Shinde’s husband, who had initially confessed to his own involvement, but later changed his story and gave evidence against them in return for immunity. Horror wears many faces.

The involvement of more of their own children. The mother and daughters were already charged with petty crimes when they started their killing spree. Seema's father was a truck driver. Anjanabai's second husband, Mohan, who was Renuka's father, abandoned them and moved in with another woman. He had two daughters from his second marriage; Anjanabai and her daughters started their killing spree with Mohan's elder daughter. Temple compounds, railway stations, fairs, bus stations… any crowded place was a hunting ground for them.

They watched their mother kill a baby as they calmly ate food. And Kiran Shinde drove the getaway car, a Fiat. Most of the kidnapped children belonged to poor families. Maybe, the parents tried to file a complaint and were turned away. Maybe, they were unable to do so. The kidnapping reports did not start coming in till very late. The first kidnapping victim was a beggar woman's one-year-old son, Santosh. They used him as a distraction. If one of them was caught pick-pocketing, the other woman carrying the child would fling him to the floor. Hurt, the child would start crying and it would create a commotion and distract the crowd. Later the child would be ruthlessly killed if it became a nuisance or a burden. Santosh was hurt when he was hurled to the floor. Denied medication, the baby's wounds festered and he was crying uncontrollably. Anjanabai shut him up by bashing his head repeatedly against an iron rod, says an investigating officer. The sisters watched their mother's gruesome act while they are food. Seema once dropped a seven-month-old baby, Swapnil, because she could not deal with its incessant crying. In one instance, they hung a two-year-old boy upside down and slammed his head against a wall.

The bag at their feet. They chopped the body of one child and stuffed it into a bag for disposal. The gang carried the bag with them and watched a movie at food while the bag lay between their feet, said an attorney who was associated with the case in the Supreme Court. The sisters were caught when they visited one victim to kidnap his second daughter in October 1996.

Seema Gavit (L) Renuka Shinde (R). A timeline of the legal proceedings is as follows:November 19, 1996: Anjana, Seema, Renuka arrested along with Renuka’s husband, Kiran Shinde.1998: Anjana dies of illness at age 50.June 29, 2001: Sessions court convicts sisters of kidnapping 13 children and killing 6 — Santosh, Anjali, Raja, Shraddha, Gauri, Pankaj.September 9, 2004: High Court upholds the conviction but acquits them of the kidnapping and murder of Raja.August 31, 2006: Supreme Court confirms death sentence.August 14, 2014: President Pranab Mukherjee rejects mercy petition.
