Even less burred than EOLIAN INSTATE, patten's EP-length Warp debut from 2013, ESTOILE NAIANT continues the "shrouded in mystery" (but photographed) producer's shift toward less challenging collages of abstracted beats and samples. It leads with "Gold Arc" and "Here Always," two of his most accomplished tracks, with layers of texture and buried melodies that seem more sculpted and shaped than haphazardly splashed onto one another. He could strip away some of the clutter -- the harsher, irregular shards of percussion and synthetic handclaps that knock, scrape, and rattle, most active in "Drift," "Winter Strobing," and "Key Embedded" -- to reveal melodic ambient pieces as affecting as those of Heathered Pearls. The closing "LL2" involves no percussion, yet it's merely a brief outro that hovers for less than two minutes. Estoile Naiant could use a couple tracks that are less stifling and easier to follow, like the preceding EP's instantly appealing "Oea/Catalogue" and "Sixth Seven," but the album does tend to be more engaging than stifling, as well as a little more graceful, than previous releases from patten.

Despite its arcane Latin title, Supraphon's four-CD set Musica Antiqua Citolibensis delivers on a part of the literature that coheres: the music created by local kapellmeisters in the Czech city of Citoliby. Although located outside of the loop of Bohemia's main cultural centers such as Prague and Brno, Citoliby enjoyed a period of primacy in music in the late eighteenth century owing to the refined tastes of its rulers, the Pachtas; the city's coat of arms bears the image of an organ. There is a Citoliby School of composers whose work is comparable to those of the contemporary Mannheim School, though quite different in style. The Citoliby School is dominated by a dynasty led by composer Václav Jan Kopriva, and one of his sons, Karel Blazej Kopriva, was its greatest exponent, and like Wolfgang Mozart, died young. Other composers featured on this set, such as Jan Adam Gallina, Jan Vent, and Jakub Lokaj, were quite satisfied to spend their whole careers living and working in Citoliby.
What makes this literature distinctive, apart from its easily recognizable Bohemian accent, is that it is like eighteenth century country music; even the sacred masses in Latin come off with a flavor that is rural and local. There is frequent use of drones, simple pentatonic melodies, and fiddle-like string writing, reminiscent to some extant of early American Moravian anthems, but minus the Dutch-German aspect. While individual composers -- particularly Karel Blazej Kopriva, whose Fuga sopra cognomen DEBEFE is as thorny and alien sounding as any organ music produced in the late classical period -- sound off within their own voices, the pastoral, countrified sound of this music is a distinguishing characteristic across the four discs.
The orchestral recordings, mainly made in the mid-'80s, aren't really up to Supraphon's best standards, being weak in the low range, rather tinny in the high, and delivering a stereo perspective strangely old fashioned for this era. The performances too are sub-par, although it's not too distracting given the nature of the music -- the lack of polish tends to underscore the folksy quality of several of these pieces. Nevertheless, all of the keyboard music included is both well recorded and played. Listeners with a special interest in music of the eighteenth century will not want to miss this, as the material is extraordinary in every way.

Ironically enough just prior to popping on Children of June, the debut record of North London singer/ songwriter and self-described one-man band, Freeholm Wilson, I was binge listening to The Brian Jonestown Massacre for a different venture I am working on (one cannot lie about these things). And as I walked around my apartment listening to Children of June hoping that the muse would visit me and help me write this article I found myself at moments wondering whether or not I had switched off The Brian Jonestown Massacre at all. Such are the similarities between the two, in certain instances at least. There are of course other folk and Americana greats that one hears the nuances of on Children of June, Dylan in spots, The Beatles in others, smidges of Springsteen, echoes of Brian Wilson helmed Beach Boys records, and the harmonies of Crosby Stills and Nash.
Despite all these influences Children of June never comes off sounding like a covers record or an ode of any sort. References to the aforementioned famous names serve only to give context to Freeholm Wilson's ascribed genres instead of me relentlessly beating readers over the head with blunt force adjectives. A large part of what makes Wilson's sound so wholly inviting and admirably nostalgic is his use of what these days are referred to as antique equipment such as a Fostex R8 reel to reel as well as an ex BBC Studer A807. Wilson recorded Children of June using one microphone - a 1960s Coles 4038 ribbon mic-which he salvaged from the decommissioned studios of the BBC World Service.
These antique soundscapes do not go unnoticed. On the opening track "Night Train" and the following "Be There" Wilson employs that Brian Jonestown musical rhetoric of the bluesy finger picked guitar layered over the tumbleweed-blown melody and repetitious thunderclaps of tambourine. But he doesn't let this trend continue on too long digging into a moodier psychedelic realm on "House by the Sea."
Wilson's penchant for Dylan on the acoustic instrumental "Shelly's Colours" and the rollicking "To the Country" though the latter's vocals, lush and hushed, sound more Paul Simon than Dylan perhaps even more so on the crushingly beautiful "California's Mine." Wilson returns to the raucous folk-stomp later on "Run Back to Me" and closes out Children of June with the acoustic psych-pop pleasures of "Autumn Child."
With the resurgence of psych tinged anything finding its way into the music of some of today's biggest indie bands, it's nice to listen to an artist, yet unknown, who is making this kind of music in its most organic form, using the same tools his predecessors used so long ago, and proving them to still be worthy, if not better. If you're one of those types who like to brag that you were listening to an artist before they became hugely successful then you should be all over Freeholm Wilson's Children of June. You can thank me later.

Ross Birchard has made the leap from beatmaker to genuine super-producer far more spectacularly than most. Drake, Lil Wayne, Bjork, Antony & The Johnsons, R. Kelly, Big Sean, Pusha T, Pharrell, Mark Ronson, Miguel, John Legend, Future, Rick Ross - the list of credits spirals into the upper echelons of adventurous hip pop titans. Hudson Mohawke had been knighted a fully paid-up producer to the stars and then he did what other pop producers fail to do - he went and had a few hits of his own, starting in the summer of 2012 when he and Lunice teamed up for an unassuming drop under the name TNGHT (Warp x LuckyMe), continuing most recently with last year's Chimes EP when Apple chose the track for their new global campaign literally wearing a Hudson Mohawke sticker proudly on their product.
Now he is back with his first solo album in over five years and it's everything you've wanted and very little of what you've expected. 'Lantern' is a fusion album of soaring orchestration and widescreen club dynamics. It looks unwaveringly towards the future while embracing an evolving, timeless canon of pop and soul music; tracks feature Antony Hegarty, Miguel, Jhene Aiko, Irfane, Ruckazoid, and Devaeux. Says HudMo, " This album is everything I've been working towards. I wanted to make a classic - at least for me and my friends. I never wanted to be any genre. I wanted to be my own thing. Everything."
