Two full blooded romantic Cello Sonatas, each with its own peculiar history and relationship to the instrument. Frédéric Chopin almost exclusively wrote for the piano. His last published work however was the Cello Sonata Op. 65, written for his close friend and cellist Auguste Franchomme.
Coincidentally legend has it (as orally testified by Pablo Casals) that Cesar Franck composed his famous Violin Sonata for "violin or cello", and that a version for cello existed in Franck's hand, written for.Auguste Franchomme. Be that correct or not, the sonata sounds equally original, forceful and lyrical for cello as for violin. This new recording presents the collaboration between two highly gifted young soloists: Benedict Kloeckner and Anna Fedorova, who deliver a both passionate and intimate performance of these great works.
They already successfully recorded Rachmaninoff's Cello Sonata, issued on Piano Classics PCL0081.

Issued nearly a year after Jobim's death, this three-CD set is ground zero, the place to start if you don't have any Jobim in your collection or for anyone who wants a single package of his multifaceted art. The set encompasses not only Jobim's own sporadic work for Verve from 1963 until his final 1994 Carnegie Hall concert and the two A&M albums of 1967 and 1970, but also sessions led by Stan Getz, Joao, and Astrud Gilberto in which Jobim appeared as a sideman. Guitarist Oscar Castro-Neves, who selected the music for this set, follows a unique game plan, devoting disc one to vocal renditions of Jobim's songs, disc two to instrumental versions, and disc three to multiple comparisons of a few Jobim standards by different performers. The selections are often adventurous, and the programming digs deeply into Jobim's PolyGram catalog for such overlooked gems as the bossa waltz "Mojave," the sly "Captain Bacardi," and the self-mocking "Chansong." For casual listening, discs one and two flow beautifully, and even disc three works, for despite the repetition of tunes, the approaches are varied enough to keep one's attention. Jobim collectors probably have almost everything on the set anyway, as there are no unreleased tracks other than a humorous uncredited rehearsal of "Aguas de Marco" tacked onto the end of "Vivo Sonhando." But they are certain to be attracted by the unique packaging -- a double-spiraled fold-out book containing lots of fascinating interviews and essays, and three discs wrapped in paper cutouts environmentally designed to look like fish, flowers, and leaves. The CD era's most imaginative graphics department has done it again.

We're more than happy to announce that David Eugene Edwards (Wovenhand) and Alexander Hacke (Einsturzende Neubauten) will release their first collaboration album entitled 'Risha' June 22nd via Glitterhouse Records. Both have known each other for ages. They have a connection since the early days of 16 Horsepower and collaborated on the reunion album 'American Twilight' by Australian Indie Rock outfit Crime & The City Solution (2013). Finally they found the time to record this astonishing piece of an album: ""David and I have been admirers of each others work for some time. We first got to play together for The Glasshouse, a movie project initiated by my wife Danielle de Picciotto and during the brief resurrection of Crime & the City Solution all three of us were involved with. Shortly after I worked on Wovenhand's Laughing Stalk album as a mixing engineer. We became close friends during these very diverse collaborations and started talking about creating music together, which would combine electronics with ethnical instruments and overdriven guitars with oriental rhythms and scales"" Hacke says. Over the last two decades, Edwards' prolific work in both bands, 16 Hosepower and Wovenhand has influenced and inspired a generation of musicians. His music has always had an unparalleled intensity. His rich, billowing and emotive voice is always the driving force of his music. ""What I love about David is his approach to words and music, which to me seems to be all about tapping into a divine source of inspiration and to leave all profane concerns and conventions behind in order to create some true and truly great art."" Alexander Hacke, a musician from the start, is primarily known as a longtime member of German industrial music group Einstürzende Neubauten and one of Germany's most influential experimental artists. ""Alexander Hacke has been a part of my life for so many years, long before I ever had the pleasure to meet him. I am a fan to say the least. He has been more than an inspiration to me. He is a true talent and I have the utmost respect and admiration for him as a person and a musician and all that he has been a part of. I have listened to religiously and learned so much from. When we finally did meet the image I had of him was only made greater, in person he is so kind and patient and generous, intelligent and such an all around bad ass"" David says. Almost impossible to resist such an exotic and amazing pairing. David Eugene Edwards recorded all vocals, guitars and string instruments; Alexander Hacke played keyboards, bass, drums and electronics. Together they created an astonishing and hypnotical soundscape and atmosphere on their first full length LP. 'Risha' cannot be described in traditional terms. This sound is a sweeping tapestry of Americana, Neo-Folk, Industrial, Ambient, Electronic and Arabic Music.

This CD reissue has the debut of drummer Marty Morell with Bill Evans and bassist Eddie Gomez; that particular trio would keep the same personnel for six productive years. Actually this is a quartet set with guest flutist Jeremy Steig, whose playing recalls Herbie Mann's recording (Nirvana) with Evans back in the early '60s. Both flutists were always open to the influences of pop and rock although in both of their collaborations with Bill Evans, the music is very much on the pianist's turf. With the exception of Evans' "Time Out for Chris" and the "Spartacus Love Theme," the songs performed on this date would fit securely in the Miles Davis repertoire of the late '50s. Steig is in particularly fine form on the program which includes tunes such as "Straight No Chaser," "Autumn Leaves" and "So What."

Aimee Lay's latest album, The Other Side Of You was recorded as more of an organic experiment than as a straight ahead studio album. The goal was to write and record something as true to being as fully expressed creatively as anything she'd ever done in the past. This intention became even more critical when her father suddenly developed a mysteriously complex illness and then passed away before the album was completed. Aimee draws upon many influences on this album, predominantly 60s and 70s folk, psychedelia, garage rock and pop elements. "I wanted to make an album like my own "Forever Changes" by Love; an album that had many different moods, sounds, elements, types of songs. but all relevant to the experience of being alive as a human in this world, with all of the endlessly varying emotions that accompany this experience. My father's death included a lot of traumatic psychological mysteries as well as physical illnesses. This left both myself and my family with a sense of deep existential crisis and PTSD. I found myself in an urgent search for spiritual understanding, the seeking of and critical need for its discovery and possibility of redemption. The title track, "The Other Side Of You" was written about both the search to understand the shadow sides of another as well the very shadow sides within oneself".

Darkroom/Interscope Records artist Billie Eilish, accompanied by her brother and chief collaborator FINNEAS O'Connell, performed an intimate acoustic set for a room of excited fans and friends in The Blue Room at Nashville's Third Man Records November 6th. The set was recorded live on Third Man's direct-to-acetate system (a 1955 Scully lathe, previously homed at King Records), and the vinyl recording will be available this Friday (12/6/19) only at Third Man retail locations in Nashville and Detroit.
