"Crush" gave Yuna a hard-fought commercial breakthrough in the U.S. The feathery Usher duet almost topped Billboard's Adult R&B Songs chart and sent Chapters, the singer's second Verve LP, into the Top Ten of the R&B/hip-hop chart. (In her native Malaysia, the single went to number one.) It's probably not coincidental that this follow-up is overloaded with featured appearances, possibly to maximize the potential for sustained crossover appeal. Whereas Usher and Jhené Aiko were harmonious collaborators on Chapters, not one of the six supporting voices on Rouge is as compatible, and the procession has a cumulative muddling effect. The songs with guest verses from Tyler, The Creator, G-Eazy, and Little Simz -- all in the album's front half -- would be effective, among Yuna's most distinct and powerful moments, without the distractions. Singer Masego and guitarist Miyavi are at least more like true support, sensitively assisting in Yuna's struggle to move beyond emotional growing pains and a fractured relationship with a variably cherished and maligned partner. As with the previous album, the primary co-songwriter and producer is Robin Hannibal. His finely layered fusions of post-disco R&B and dazed pop are still well-suited for Yuna's tender, increasingly rich voice and nuanced melodicism. The two are at their best when they let loose a bit, as on "Blank Marquee," a sweetly spiteful number faintly echoing Oliver Cheatham's "Get Down Saturday Night" and Edwin Birdsong's "Rapper Dapper Snapper." A close second is what comes after it, a sheer ballad with subtle twists and turns written with Alexandra Govere (aka Shungudzo). "You're not the love of my life" seems at first like a dismissal, but as Yuna repeats the line over a rhythm that tugs ever so slightly, the matter doesn't sound settled, and by the end she sounds like she's trying to suppress longing and regret. Those whose ears perk up by the MCs' names will hopefully listen intently enough to notice the detail and depth there and elsewhere. ~ Andy Kellman

Nordvargr returns to Cyclic Law with yet another crushing offering that follows in the footsteps of it's highly acclaimed predecessor "Metempsychosis" and develops the sound even further. Daath was recorded back to back with MZ. 412´s "Svartmyrkr" and the creative maelstrom that infused that masterpiece also can be heard in Nordvargr´s solo efforts. The ambient parts have been put in the backseat in order to make way for heavy percussion, stringed and bowed instrumentation and thundering vocals delivered with serious intent. The title refers to the false sephira which also can be interpreted as the great abyss that needs to be crossed in order to attain higher knowledge; a fitting analogy for the ordeals that took place during the composition of this album as well as a perfect symbol of the new sound and direction of Nordvargr's creative universe.

Franz Krommer (alias Frantisek Kramár) was born in Moravia three years after Mozart and died in Vienna four years after Beethoven, setting him firmly within the Classical period. His substantial output included a good deal of orchestral and chamber music, as well as works for the piano and the Church. In his time, his string quartets were highly regarded, and he was considered by some as a rival to Beethoven. The modern age has tended to regard him as a petit maître whose music is fluent and skilful without being especially memorable. Woodwind players nevertheless have occasion to be grateful to Krommer for his numerous chamber pieces featuring either clarinet or flute: the three quintets here, published between 1805 and 1822, are nicely written for a line-up of flute, violin, two violas and cello while openly favouring the flautist. Occasionally the learned mode Krommer employs shows up the undistinguished nature of his material, but his slow movements are airy and his minuets amiably energetic. In these modern-instrument performances, rather closely recorded, Bruno Meier's fluting sounds a bit fulsome and the Stamitz Quartet a little too fierce; but the ensemble playing is adept throughout.
