These three quartets from opus 33 define the archetype of the 'Classical' string quartet, a genre that would henceforth blossom independently of its patrons. Haydn makes of it a music that is light, subtle, intentionally humorous, concise and radiant, capable of leaving private drawing rooms for popular concerts. Mozart immediately detected its originality as would the classic composers of the...20th Century.

    Imaginary Soundtrack - Paolo Russo
In Imaginary Soundtrack, Paolo Russo and friends invite you to create your own narrative to accompany their vivid, suggestive soundworld.
Rather than following an existing storyline, composer Paolo Russo seeks to encourage the listener to create his or her own characters, dialogue, moods and landscapes as his music unfolds. In this way, anyone can build in their mind a unique tale in combination with this music, reflecting personal idiosyncrasies, desires, visions and ideas. Listeners are sure to be inspired by an unusual and colourful combination of instruments: Russo plays the bandoneon, and is joined in his dream-weaving endeavour by a trio of outstanding musicians: Thommy Andersson from Sweden on double bass, Roberto Torto from Italy on recorders, and Danish percussionist David Hildebrandt on vibraphone.
Stylistically, the music draws upon Russo's distinctive fusion of jazz, world and pop styles, influenced by travels from his native Italy to his current home in Denmark to Buenos Aires and beyond. Russo's fellow musicians draw upon a similarly diverse range of influences to make this a truly captivating album.

Magnet - The Wicker Man (2005)

    Artist: Magnet
    Title: The Wicker Man
    Year Of Release: 2005
    Label: Silva Screen Records
    Genre: Soundtrack, Folk
    Quality: FLAC (tracks)
    Total Time: 39:38
    Total Size: 185 MB
Against all odds, one of the most talked about soundtracks in movie history rose to the surface in 2002. Believed for years to be lost, destroyed or even buried deep beneath a motorway, this disc contains Paul Giovanni's original music to The Wicker Man. These historic recordings had, up until then, only been heard by a select few.
Based on the themes of fertile pre-Christian practices of pagan Britain, The Wicker Man did not follow the predictable formula of 1960's British horror movies. The equally non-formulaic music score was provided by talented songwriter Paul Giovanni, and his assistant Gary Carpenter.
With only six weeks allotted to write, research and record the soundtrack, Paul draws on the rich traditions of Celtic music to present a brilliant collection of eclectic folk songs underpinned with aeons-old verse.
The first 8 tracks are the stereo masters which would have been the soundtrack to The Wicker Man that Paul Giovanni originally intended for album release, which ultimately never happened because of the film's troubled history.
The following three tracks were recorded for the film and used for playback purposes on set but only exist in mono versions. These have been digitally restored and enhanced for CD release.
The balance of the tracks have been compiled from various sources (with occasional sound effects) and present elements of the background score to the film to give a more complete representation of this unique score.
    Tracklist:
    01. Magnet - Corn Rigs (2:37)
    02. Magnet - The Landlord's Daughter (2:40)
    03. Magnet - Gently Johnny (3:33)
    04. Magnet - Maypole (2:46)

    Howard Williams - Piano

    Doug Watkins - Bass
    Louis Hayes - Drums
"Although collected here under John Coltrane's name, these Savoy sessions recorded between March 13 and June 24, 1958 at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Hackensack, NJ were actually helmed by trumpet and flugelhorn player Wilbur Harden, who had the good sense to hire Coltrane for the project (which resulted in the original LPs Countdown and Africa). He also brought aboard trombonist Curtis Fuller, pianists Tommy Flanagan and Howard Williams (the sessions split into quintet and sextet groupings, with slightly different rhythm sections for each), bassists Doug Watkins and Ali Jackson and drummers Louis Hayes and Art Taylor. By accident or design, Coltrane was fore-grounded in most of the mixes, and his playing sounds joyous and energetic, matched perfectly by both of the ensemble configurations, and these were obviously productive sessions. Assigning Coltrane's name as lead to these sides some fifty years later may not be exactly historically accurate, but he is clearly the focus on many of these tracks. Harden, who is somewhat of the forgotten man in all of this, should not be dismissed, however, because these were his sessions, after all, and his playing is warm, steady (he often doubles up trumpet with flugelhorn) and well worthy of a larger recorded discography than history provided him."

Sonny Criss - The Beat Goes On! (1968) FLAC

    Artist: Sonny Criss
    Title: The Beat Goes On!
Year Of Release: January 12, 1968
    Label: Prestige/Original Jazz Classics
    Genre: Jazz, Hard Bop
    Quality: Flac lossless
    Total Time: 33:32
    Total Size: 220 MB

    02. Georgia Rose
    03. Somewhere My Love
    04. Calidad
    05. Yesterdays
    06. Ode to Billie Joe
    Personnel
    Sonny Criss - alto saxophone
    Cedar Walton - piano
    Bob Cranshaw - bass
    Alan Dawson - drums
This is one of a group of Prestige dates by Sonny Criss from the late '60s that featured the altoist elegantly ripping through pop tunes, standing them on their heads and making them into credible vehicles for his dazzling virtuosity. For this 1968 recording, Criss gets hold of Sonny Bono's "The Beat Goes On" and makes it sophisticated, soulful, and swinging. The saxophonist is ably aided in this unlikely transformation by bassist Bob Cranshaw, pianist Cedar Walton, and drummer Alan Dawson, whose swirling brush work is key to the success of the title track. The group is less successful in pulling off a similar identity change on "Somewhere My Love." The melody gets an overly snappy Las Vegas lounge treatment, but then the piece comes together for some crisp, exciting solo work. Bobbie Gentry's "Ode to Billy Joe" also gets the Criss treatment. Partial success again, as the rhythm section remains a bit too static. Moving outside the pop repertoire, Criss scores full marks with a fiery, focused, up-tempo version of "Yesterdays"; the mid-tempo standard "Georgia Rose"; and his own urbane blues, "Calidad." This last piece is one of the performances on the CD where Criss, with his rapid, serpentine flow of ideas, begins to sound almost like Eric Dolphy. But where Dolphy regularly pushed towards the avant-garde, Criss' astonishing abilities are based within a more traditional, accessible syntax.

    14. White Light/White Heat (3:55)
    15. Rock 'n' Roll Suicide (4:36)
After performing his second-to-last selection, "White Light/White Heat," a tune by Lou Reed, the songwriter who most influenced Ziggy Stardust, David Bowie's enduring and indelible persona, Bowie dropped this little nugget on his fans (and bandmates): "Not only is it the last show of the tour, but it's the last show that we'll ever do. Thank you." He then went into a magnificent version of "Rock & Roll Suicide," a song that gives a glimpse of where Bowie could have gone, not to suicide, but to the style of rock & roll that a long-term band can provide. Had Bowie kept the Spiders from Mars together, unique flashes like the version of "Let's Spend the Night Together" or the striking "All the Young Dudes would have continued, a tight little rock & roll band providing a balance that dissipated when the artist branched out on his own. The other unnerving thing about this double-LP soundtrack of a concert taped in 1973 and finally released in 1982 is that there are bootlegs which have more to offer sonically. The thin recording is shameful: don't expect Pink Floyd's Delicate Sound of Thunder or even the Rolling Stones' wonderfully sludgy "Get Your Ya Ya's Out." The remix of this only official live album from the Ziggy Stardust shows is dreadful. Ziggy Stardust: The Motion Picture doesn't have the electric excitement of the Live in Santa Monica '72 boot, and that's the fault of the remix by Mike Moran, Bruce Tergeson, Tony Visconti, and Bowie. Another bootleg, David Bowie with the Spiders from Mars, London, July 3, 1973, is the exact same Ziggy performance, but it comes across better, much better. According to Pimm Jal de la Parra's book David Bowie: The Concert Tapes, the bootleg was issued from the ABC TV 1974 broadcast. The bootleg also has "Jean Genie and "Love Me Do," which feature Jeff Beck on guitar, Beck's performances being absent from the official RCA soundtrack release. The shame of it all is that this double disc was released after David Live and Stage, and while the upside is it makes for a rare, three double-live sets from one performer, the downside is that the best of those three albums has the worst mix on official record. Also, had RCA released the October 1, 1972 Boston Music Hall show -- which was brilliant, despite Bowie having a cold that night -- or this July 3, 1973 London Hammersmith Odeon program back in the day, it could have had an enormous effect on Bowie's career. At that point in time, the fans wanted more Ziggy, and the timing of this release only shows how important it is to get the material out while it's hot. Just ask Peter Frampton, Bob Seger, and the J. Geils Band, who solidified their audiences with double-live sets at crucial points in their careers. Nonetheless, everything here is essential David Bowie; it is a great performance, and you definitely need it for your Bowie collection. The only thing better would be Lou Reed himself finally releasing the September 1973 first gig of his Rock 'n' Roll Animal Band, which was, as they say, the real thing.
