Jennifer Warnes - Another Time, Another Place (2018) [SACD]

    Artist: Jennifer Warnes
    Title: Another Time, Another Place
    Year Of Release: 2018
    Label: Impex Records
    Genre: Soft Rock, Folk Rock
Quality: DSD64 image (*.iso) | FLAC (24bit/88,2 kHz)
    Total Time: 00:47:37
    Total Size: 1,91 GB / 807 mb (+3%rec.)
Legendary singer-songwriter Jennifer Warnes has created a beautiful, elegant new album. Much anticipated album! First new release in over a decade! Beautifully recorded and carefully mastered.
Reuniting with bassist-composer Roscoe Beck (who co-produced her seminal classic Famous Blue Raincoat), Ms. Warnes shapes ten classic tunes into a timeless narrative of living, loving and making sense of changing times.
One of the most-loved singers of our time, Jennifer Warnes has returned with a modern-day masterpiece called Another Time, Another Place. With glorious production and performances, and of course, impeccable vocals, Another Time, Another Place features the cream of the crop of songwriters including Eddie Vedder ("Just Breathe"), Mark Knopfler ("Why Worry"), John Legend, Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks and more.
Joining Warnes are brilliant musicians and friends such as Dean Parks (Steely Dan, Bob Dylan), pedal steel king Greg Liesz (k.d. lang, Eric Clapton) and drummer Vinnie Colaiuta (Frank Zappa, Sting). Jennifer Warnes has always been known as someone who makes beautifully crafted records with an open heart, unafraid to show emotion and love through her work. It's the perfect time for Another Time, Another Place.
Jennifer's long-time mastering engineer Bernie Grundman artfully brings out all the detail, presence and harmonic body of this amazingly life-like recording. Impex's luxe presentation features an 18-page booklet of lyrics and photographs.
Every new album Jennifer Warnes creates is a showcase of musical beauty, lovingly crafted and gorgeously performed. We can expect nothing less of one of the world's greatest interpretive singers.
"I had a series of losses," she says. "Horrible losses. Many in a row. It shook me up quite a bit. My mother was my significant other person, and went all over the world with me, and was the one who believed in me. She died in 2001. In 2013, my two sisters died a week apart unexpectedly. Then my manager was hit and run, and died instantly, close to the death of my two sisters, and then I put my dog down. Then Leonard Cohen died."
Perhaps not coincidentally, it's Roscoe Beck - producer of Famous Blue Raincoat and Cohen's musical director in his final years - who acts as Another Time, Another Place's co-producer, helping the 71-year-old find a way to express her sadness.
It wasn't purely despair at her own losses that, for the first time since The Well, provoked Warnes' formal return to the studio - or, more accurately, Beck's kitchen, where they had to turn off the air conditioning and fridge to record. She also had more altruistic reasons.
"The depth of pain," she explains, "that a person goes through at certain chapters of their lives is."
Her voice trails off before she again tries to explain her motives.
"You can't really share that, but I felt I could make a record that would offer comfort to people going through stuff similar to me. It was really important and intentional to make a tender record. The world is in such distress, so the sound of a woman's voice being tender in a recording that could be sent all over the world - that was clean, clear, wise and enjoyable - might help. It would help me to do it, and it would help others to do it, so you feel that it delivers some kind of sanity. That's a good thing to give to somebody.
"In my younger years," she adds, sipping white tea, "you wanted to give them a sexier feeling. You wanted to give them a 'Tear The Door Down' feeling. At this time of life, it was like, 'Oh my God, there's so many suffering people!' I don't have one friend that doesn't have something going on in their lives. So what's my job? If you take that little CD and it fills an hour of your time, it ought to make you feel something. It ought to cure something. Who wants a goody two-shoes record that makes you feel unreasonably happy in a world like this? That was the question I asked myself: 'What does it mean to make music that helps others?'"
It's hard to believe she could have succeeded better. Another Time, Another Place boasts rare poignancy, unfiltered vulnerability and genuine compassion: a feminine counterpart, one might say, to Johnny Cash's final releases. Its skeletal arrangements and refined production reveal Warnes' extraordinary sensitivity, something underlined by its opening song, a startling cover of Pearl Jam's Just Breathe (from 2009's Backspace). Its selection, suitably, was provoked less by an urge to surprise people than for its sentiment, which encapsulates much of what makes the record so special. "Yes, I understand," Warnes's warm voice trembles, "every life must end," before adding "I'm a lucky one, to count on both hands the ones I love."
The rest of the album is equally wistful, whether John Legend's delicate "Once I Was Loved", in which she forgives a woman interacting with her former lover, or the elegantly laidback "The Boys And Me", which she co-wrote with Michael Smotherman - a songwriter and touring member of Captain Beefheart's band - or the reassuring "Why Worry", penned by Mark Knopfler for Brothers In Arms.
"This is a real treat for the ears. The perfect guitar tone, the decay of the notes beautifully natural, the instrument separation and vocal layering on this record sounded spot-on in all the tracks I heard across several systems. But the 'Why Worry' cover on the M2s was magical. A superbly musical presentation from both LP and playback. Indeed, we need not worry as audiophiles. We have talent like Jennifer Warnes returning after 17 years sounding as spectacular as ever. And we have fine people like Abey Fonn, Laurence Aston, and Bernie Grundman making sure the beauty of her voice and the other instruments come through as clean and natural as possible. I suggest you get a copy whatever your digital or analog proclivities. You won't be disappointed." - Lee Scoggins, Part-Time Audiophile, Munich 2019

You would think that the first album by the youngest member of the Marsalis family would garner quite a range of media coverage, but drummer Jason Marsalis' debut album as a leader didn't seem to inspire the sort of instant recognition that his brothers had earned. Even odder regarding the silence surrounding its release is that it is such an exceptionally fine recording by an inventive percussionist and gifted composer who draws from a vast array of influences (many of them listed in the liner notes), drummers and otherwise. Jason's father, legendary New Orleans pianist and sire of prodigious jazzmen, Ellis Marsalis, has been quoted as calling his youngest son the most musically advanced and gifted of his sons by the age of 21, and this debut certainly goes a long way towards supporting such a heady statement. The album was titled Year of the Drummer by Marsalis because an unusual number of drummers released their own records in 1998, from Jeff "Tain" Watts to Brian Blades. Marsalis' debut certainly holds its own next to those recordings. One of the most interesting things about the album is its adventurous eclecticism, in terms of both tastes and abilities, deftly jumping from percussion experiments to straight-ahead bop to New Orleans jazz to the Latin licks of "He Who Swings De Rumba Clave." On "Hand Jivin'," Marsalis even plays his drum solo with his hands, fleshing out interesting timbres that might have gone undeveloped with a typical solo, as he alludes to in his self-penned liner notes. The quintet never seems to overplay, and the five young musicians show a wonderful subtlety and feel for one other, which is at least partly attributable to their leader. The solos are kept to a minimum, but each instrumentalist takes advantage of his moments, particularly on "Death March of Our Time," a recording solidly in the line of John Coltrane (and, therefore, brother Branford as well). Marsalis' drumming on the wonderful, lively "The Upper Second Line" is scintillating, mixing in some rock fills with the jazz and quasi-Latin fills, and playing the second live groove at a faster pace than normal (hence the composition's title), which lends the tune a jittery, excited sensibility. And those are just the brightest moments on this intriguing, exploratory debut from yet another Marsalis whose music is worth being excited about.

    personnel :
    Michael Moore - Bass
    Bill Charlap - Piano
The relaxed landscape of this CD, recorded live as part of Concord's Duo Series, is drawn with the first track, when Michael Moore bows the head of "I Remember You" on his sonorous, 200-year-old Tyrol bass until Bill Charlap arrives, bringing the perfect complement in his light, delicate touch as the two swing the tune around. This balance of colors -- together with the empathic duo work of two masters, each with a flawless internal clock -- characterizes all that follows, whether it's bop or ballad, show song or Ellingtonia, or a jaunty antique like "Ain't She Sweet" or "Limehouse Blues." In general, this is a sunny bunch of tunes, cooked over easy. Highlights include "If I Loved You," with Moore again bowing warm, but never schmaltzy and with Charlap's entrance turning it into a gentle bossa; Moore's own lovely "The Old New Waltz," with its echoes of Bill Evans; and the witty romp on Benny Goodman and Charlie Christian's rarely heard "Seven Come Eleven." The 14 tracks are short, none longer than five minutes, and the inclusion of the Mahler seems an odd, recital-ish choice, but things get back on track with a merry chase after "Cottontail," and wrap with a warm reading of the beautiful "Deep Summer Music." This is a spare and sparkling little gem, full of feeling, and perfect for going through the papers on a rainy Sunday morning.~Judith Schlesinger

    AllMusic Review by Greg Prato
The one-man drum'n'bass outfit Squarepusher (aka Tom Jenkinson) treads upon more unpredictable terrain on Music Is Rotted One Note. Although the album still contains elements of his usual drum'n'bass sound, this is by and large a jazz/fusion affair. Jenkinson does a masterful job playing all the instruments live and by himself, and perfectly re-creates the funky atmosphere of such early-'70s Miles Davis classics as Get Up With It and On the Corner. Jenkinson's performances throughout the disc are both flawless and inspired -- he obviously realized that if he were to pay tribute to Miles, nothing but the best would do. Davis' spirit lives on in such tracks as "Don't Go Plastic," "Dust Switch," "137 (Rinse)," and "Theme From Vertical Hold," while "My Sound" perfectly captures the essence of Miles' calming and reflective compositions. But don't be misled; this is not a by-the-numbers rip-off of Miles Davis. Jenkinson updates these familiar sounds with '90s recording techniques and injects enough of his own style into the mix to keep it recognizable. Miles would be proud.

    AllMusic Review by AllMusic
While U.K. techno maven Jamie Lidell's early releases explored the outer fringes of the nascent mid-90's experimental techno scene, by 2000 he had morphed into an authentic soul vocalist as one half of the duo Supercollider. MULTIPLY EDITIONS presents remixed or otherwise reworked versions from his breakthrough 2005 solo album, MULTIPLY.
The remixes, though, never distract from the gruff Otis Redding-styled vocal inflections of Lidell, whose powerful performances take center stage. The collection features the talents of such contemporaries as Herbert, Luke Vibert, and Gonzalez--all of whom lend their distinctive sonic imprint to the proceedings. The tracks are reimagined as everything from skeletal funk in the vein of Prince to piano-driven numbers, as in the rousing 12-bar blues of "Multiply (In a Minor Key)." Surprising and unexpected, MULTIPLY EDITIONS is a remix album that will have soul-music pundits wondering if it's real or if it's Memorex.

James Edward Barker - The Courier (2019)

    Artist: James Edward Barker
    Title: The Courier
    Year Of Release: 2019
    Label: Varese Sarabande

James Edward Barker (born 14 February 1980) is an award-winning British composer, music producer and film producer. Many of his music works include an ethereal mixture of live sonic experimentation with grandiose classical motifs and alternative percussion.
Barker was classically trained at Newcastle University in the UK, and is a multi-instrumentalist, performing as a guitarist, percussionist, pianist and vocalist.
His first feature, Unhitched, a romantic comedy starring Seth Green, Stuart Townsend, and Amy Smart, was directed by Shooting Fish director Stefan Schwartz. Barker co-composed the score with his old school friend Tim Despic, with whom he frequently composes with. Barker and Despic also worked with veteran director Robert Young on Bye, Bye Harry!. Barker followed these films with a number of solo ventures, mostly dark and moody scores including: Psych:9, starring Sara Foster, Cary Elwes and Michael Biehn; Jim Threapleton's Extraordinary Rendition, starring Andy Serkis and Omar Berdouni, and the British indie horror film Reverb, starring Leo Gregory, Margo Stilley and Eva Birthistle.
In 2007, Barker and Despic scored the $7m British ITV television production, The History of Mr Polly, starring Lee Evans; and in 2008, he continued his solo career, working with BAFTA-nominated director Martin Radich on the WARP Film and UKFC production Crack Willow, produced by Tristan Goligher.
Barker scored the follow-up to the cult horror hit The Human Centipede, titled The Human Centipede 2 (Full Sequence).
One of Barker's most remarkable working relationships is with the critically acclaimed director Andrew Haigh. They first met on the film Crack Willow and after Barker was asked to score his short, Five Miles Out and other projects after that. Haigh hired Barker to write the score for his second feature film, Weekend, however the director ended up making a creative choice to not involve any score in the film. Following that, Haigh made 45 Years, again a film with no score, but finally connected on Lean on Pete which features an atmospheric score by Barker. The synergy between score and sound design was largely impacted by a four-week-long mixing session, allowing experimentation to find the right audio and guidance from sound designer Joakim Sundström, who worked on Oscar-nominated Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
