Thirteen years into their tenure, the Dave Brubeck Quartet was still able to mine the creative vein for new means of expression. Despite the hits and popularity on college campuses, or perhaps because of it, Brubeck, Paul Desmond, Eugene Wright, and Joe Morello composed a restless band with a distinctive sound. These eight tracks, all based on a tour of Japan the year before, were, in a sense, Brubeck fulfilling a dictum from his teacher, the French composer Darius Milhaud, who exhorted him to "travel the world and keep your ears open." The sketches Brubeck and Desmond created all invoke the East, particularly the folk melodies of Japan directly, while still managing to use the Debussian impressionistic approach to jazz that kept them riding the charts and creating a body of music that, while playing into the exotica craze of the moment, was still jazz composed and played with integrity. The gorgeous modal blues that uses Eastern scale whole tones with Western harmonic notions -- chromatically -- that comprise the melody and solo frameworks for Desmond in "Fujiyama" are a beautiful contrast to the relatively straight-ahead ballad style featured on "Zen Is When," with its 4/4 time sling rhythm and simple melody -- extrapolated by Brubeck in purely Japanese whole tone scale on the harmony. Also, the shimmer and whisper of "The City Is Crying," where Desmond's solo is one of the most beautiful of his career, using arpeggios as half tones to reach down into the middle of his horn's register and play harmonically a counterpoint that is as painterly as it is poignant. On "Osaka Blues," Brubeck once again reaches for an oriental scale to play a modal blues Ã* la Miles Davis with Wynton Kelly; Desmond responds by playing straight post-bop Bluesology with even a squeak or two in his solo. In all, Jazz Impressions of Japan is one of the great forgotten Brubeck records. Its sweetness is tempered with musical adventure and the improvisational experience only a band that had been together 13 years could provide. It's truly wonderful.

Sacred steel has found its way into the consciousness of the music-listening public over the last few years, bringing the music of the House of God services to the masses. The real center of the genre lies in and around Rochester, NY, with the church of Charles Campbell being one of the focal points. Here, the children (and grandchildren) of the venerable Campbell elder pump out a series of pieces from in and out of the church. The idea in sacred steel is to make use of the wailing and moaning of steels to bridge the gap between blues and gospel in essence, with tinges of R&B, etc., thrown in for good measure. The brothers deliver on that goal quite well. The gamut from traditional songs ("Amazing Grace") to the works of Pops Staples and Sam Cooke is run ably, with the three front-line brothers putting together a volley technique of guitar playing that would make Lynyrd Skynyrd proud. The playing is quite good here, and -- perhaps more notably -- the recording quality is excellent, as opposed to many of the other sacred steel albums on the market. For new fans of sacred steel, this one's a sure pick. For those just looking into the genre, some of the compilations on Arhoolie may be better overviews.

In the mid-'60s, veteran saxophonist Al Sears ran the Arock and Sylvia labels, which put out a couple dozen or so obscure New York soul records. Typically, Kent manages to make a CD out of its catalog, the 28 tracks split about half between 1962-1966 singles and previously unissued sides. In fact, much of the unreleased material was sung by unidentified demo singers, and although Kent has identified a few of these with confidence, three cuts are for the time being ascribed to "unknown." Often this kind of thing is something that only die-hard genre specialists can hear in one sitting, but though it'll be those collectors that comprise this disc's listenership, it's better than the average such archival anthology. You have to stare long and hard at the track listing for any of these names to ring bells, though some might recognize two of the "demo singers," Marie Knight (who did the original of "Come Tomorrow," covered by Manfred Mann for a British Invasion hit) and Sam Hawkins (who had a 1965 Top Ten R&B hit with "Hold on Baby"). Sterling Magee, represented by pretty straight soul tunes, might be better known to latter-day listeners as half of the blues duo Satan & Adam, who had some indie success in the 1990s. The name of Van McCoy pops up too, as the singer and songwriter of "Too Much," a 1964 single credited to the DC Playboys. Still, despite the relative anonymity of the other contributors, there's some good period pop-soul here, sometimes with a gospel feel. The Corvairs sound halfway between the Drifters and Gene Pitney on "A Victim of Her Charms"; Tutti Hill sounds a lot like Mary Wells on the original version of "He's a Lover," which Wells herself covered in 1965; two of Joan Moody's tracks are pretty accurate Supremes imitations; Gene Burks sounds like an early Stax artist on "Can't Stand Your Fooling Around"; and Garrett Saunders' "A Day or Two" is an upfront imitation and rewrite of Chuck Jackson's "Any Day Now," if an enjoyable one. The numerous demos are as a whole considerably inferior to the singles in both production and the quality of the songs, but it's interesting to hear a sparse piano-voice-dominated demo of Knight's "Come Tomorrow," though the single from which Manfred Mann learned the song isn't here, as it came out on a different label. The Larks, who do the 1964 single "For the Love of Money" here, by the way, are a different Larks than the group who did the hit "Cool Jerk," though "For the Love of Money" isn't a bad tune all the same.

Shapes: La geometrÃ*a de la frescura pintada en acuarela.
La geometrÃ*a es enemiga de las perspectivas, de la ambigüedad. Un prisma rectangular siempre será el mismo desde cualquier punto en que lo mires, no hay coyuntura a la interpretación, la precisión gana, algo como contradecir al método cientÃ*fico.
Pero ¿qué pasa si desarmamos todo lo establecido por alguna regla o sistema y construimos un nuevo cuerpo hecho por muchos otros? Si tomamos un poco de algo, y otro poco de aquello, lo mezclamos aunque relativamente ese algo sea opuesto con lo otro, después lo acomodamos de manera que haya armonÃ*a en su aspecto, como la personalidad humana creada a partir de un sin número de influencias adquiridas. ¿Qué pasarÃ*a?
Al final tendremos una creación propia, única, abierta a otras piezas que se puedan unir sobre la marcha. Todo este proceso muy a la Frankenstein es escrupulosamente dominado por los hermanos Galicia (Miguel y Hugo). La unión de sus fuerzas da como resultado Tayrell, un proyecto con un ya sólido palmarés que irrumpe en la escena para mostrar su más reciente producción titulada Shapes.
Un álbum que sigue explorando las más grandes premisas del dúo de origen mexicano, como lo es el chillwave y el soul, pero agregando a la formula lÃ*ricas, algunos beats más densos y colaboraciones interesantes. Con una producción que lleva el sello de la casa esta placa pronto se empezará a posicionar en el gusto del escucha.
Shapes da inicio con "Wind", un track plagado de ondas funky y lÃ*neas de bajo adornadas con espontáneos slaps, conservando un tempo moderado que invita a la relajación, a su vez evoca de inmediato aquellas aperturas de las pistas de baile en los clubes setenteros, en aquella década donde la música disco dominaba por completo la industria.
Siguiendo con "Paycheck", donde puede notarse la nueva propuesta del proyecto nos encontramos con la voz de Maydien & Holy Brune, siendo este un acertado complemento que le da un toque más fiestero a la canción, el cual será factor en la mayorÃ*a de las piezas que conforman el álbum.
El posible punto más fuerte de Shapes se da gracias a "Night Out", planteado como primer single - siendo este un gran acierto - por las melódicas voces que aportan las participaciones de Wynonna Stoové & Robin Yerah. Un track pensado para el dancefloor, y que a su vez se complementa con una joya de videoclip que puedes ver en cualquier momento en YouTube. LÃ*neas de bajo excitantes, puentes atractivos, producción de alta calidad, atmósfera de party. BINGO!
La fantasÃ*a al ritmo de los sonidos de la lluvia descendiendo se convierte en placentera existencia con "Make It Real" en colaboración con Olive B, que si bien se apega un poco más a los inicios de Tayrell termina por ser una breve - pero efectiva - caricia al oÃ*do, ideal para una sesión de yoga o un arrullo para antes de dormir. Tú decides.
Siendo la frescura el común denominador la conclusión de esta producción se da con "Memory", que cuenta con una interesante pista estilo trap, pero que va adquiriendo un plus gracias a Virginia Palms en las voces, dando como resultado una canción fuerte, idónea para un cierre con toda la energÃ*a restante. El paseo fue breve, pero como dicen por ahÃ*. De lo bueno, poco.
En una breve reflexión hay que destacar que da gusto encontrarse con proyectos mexicanos sólidos y dispuestos a arriesgarse, ese es el valor agregado que ofrece Tayrell con Shapes, porque cualquiera puede armar un cubo, pero no cualquiera se atreve a crear una nueva figura. La atracción hacia el redescubrimiento y el valor al usar todos tus recursos es simplemente encontrar en un lienzo en blanco todas las posibilidades ya canalizadas que tu mente puede fabricar, tu tienes la última palabra con el curso que les des.

Franz Liszt and Olivier Messiaen don't usually spring to mind as similar figures, let alone as an expected pairing for an album, since the former was the arch-Romantic virtuoso pianist and tone poet, while the latter was an influential modernist composer and organist. Yet both men were devout Roman Catholic musicians with mystical ideas that found expression in their works. To be sure, this disc by pianist Fredrik Ullén illustrates the differences between them by presenting their solo piano pieces in alternation, so the listener is never lulled by one style or the other but stays attentive throughout the program. There is no mistaking Liszt's placid, sometimes bland, tonality for Messiaen's dense, dissonant chromaticism, and the generally dreamy atmosphere of Liszt's meditations contrasts with Messiaen's spiky, percussive approach to the piano. But both composers were adept at creating trancendental meditations that carry the mind to other worlds, and their strains of mysticism color the listener's reception of the music, whether it is the peaceful, paradisiacal realm of Liszt's Consolations or the cosmic visions of Messiaen's Petites esquisses d'oiseaux. Ullén is best known for his recordings of avant-garde music, yet he possesses the technical skills and musicality to interpret pieces from the 19th century with equal conviction, so his abilities make the pairing of Liszt and Messiaen less unlikely and even more fascinating.
