Given their ample discographies, it's surprising the Levin Brothers-keyboardist Pete and bassist Tony-haven't worked together more. Joined by their fellow Hudson Valley stalwarts, saxophonist Erik Alexander and drummer Jeff "Siege" Siegel, the bros are making up for lost time with their quartet and this first-rate live recording. Perhaps most impressive are the Levins' own compositions-both share credit on five memorable tunes here-although their thoughtful arrangement of the folk standard "Scarborough Fair" and plaintive reading of Astor Piazzolla's "Milonga del Angel" are also highlights. Ennio Morricone's treacly "Theme from Cinema Paradiso" gets the high-gloss, Narada-sampler treatment in its introduction, complete with rare cello work from Tony. It feels like a misstep among an otherwise unimpeachable set of performances that, in the words of two album titles by Pete's one-time employer Gil Evans, plunge both out of the cool and into the hot.

Stuttgarter Dauner approaches legendary status as one of Germany's most inventive pianist-composers. Here the quartet jumps onto a bouncy Take The A Train, riding on to Dauner's own Waltz for a Young Girl with luscious soprano and piano solos. On Ellington's Take The Coltrane the band rides out on a modern blues. Swiss pianist Elsie Bianchi was popular throughout the 50's and 60's as pianist/pianist. Her Baron Lazor features a relaxed, swinging blues, while she interprets What Is This Thing Called Love with a bluesy flair and some hip quotes. Dieter Reith co-wrote the music for 1972 Munich Olympics and worked with the likes of Stan Getz and Art Farmer. On Willow Weep For Me he rhapsodizes in trio on the melody before injecting a Latin lilt with the addition of timbales and bongos. Rieth's Goofin' Each Other displays his prodigious talent: this guy can play! 'Waldi' Heidepriem was a force in the South German music scene; with tightly knit arrangements and Impressive trumpet and sax solos on Cole Porter's You Do Something To Me and Jimmy Heath's Big P, his quintet shows off the high quality of play in mid-60's Germany. An enlightening listen to some of the best young German players of the era.

The Levellers are an English folk rock band formed in Brighton, England in 1988, consisting of Mark Chadwick (guitar and vocals), Jeremy Cunningham (bass guitar), Charlie Heather (drums), Jon Sevink (violin), Simon Friend (guitar and vocals), and Matt Savage (keyboards). Taking their name from the Levellers political movement, the band released their first EP in 1989 and LP in 1990, with international success following upon signing to China Records and the release of their second album Levelling the Land. The band were once considered the most popular Indie band in Britain, enjoying their greatest period of success in the 1990s, with their popularity culminating in their record breaking headlining act at Glastonbury Festival in 1994, when they performed on The Pyramid Stage to a crowd of 300,000 people, a record which still stands to this day. Self-described as having "a left wing view of politics", they continue to record and tour.

For some unexplainable reason Kent Records omitted "I'm Blue" which Salt N' Pepa rearranged into "Shoop." Fine, Fine, Fine was first released in 1965, reissued in 1987, and re-reissued on CD by Ace Records in the late '90s. Most of the Ikettes' funky, infectious singles are here, including "Camel Walk," "He Is (Fine, Fine, Fine") and "Peaches 'n' Cream." Their soulful Supremes imitation "I'm So Thankful," written by Marc Gordon and Frank Wilson, display a modest side of Ike Turner's hand-picked mini-skirted, rump-shakin' divas. They slathered soul sauce all over the Jaynettes' eerie "Sally Go Round the Roses," and the soulful, lamenting "How Come Nobody Loves Me" is a crusher. For the price, the 15 cuts - boosted to 24 for the Ace version - are a bargain.
