The term "Hanseatic" in this program titled Festive Hanseatic Music originates from the word Hansa, which simply means a company of merchants trading overseas. The selections here were mostly composed during the waning years of the so-called Hanseatic league--an alliance of primarily prosperous northern European cities that began in the 13th century and ended in the 17th. While commerce for the Hanseatic league may have been on the decline during this period, the quality of the works offered on this new CPO CD clearly gives the impression that its musical life was thriving.
While a few of the major composers of the time are represented (Weckmann, Obrecht, Orlando di Lasso and Clemens non Papa) the program is devoted mostly to the lesser known. For example, the opening selections are three sacred concerto excerpts by Julius Johannes Weiland, a composer new to me and otherwise not currently represented on CD. Though obviously indebted to Schutz, Weiland's lovely settings are similarly rich in polyphonic variety and instrumental texture. While Julius Ernst Rautenstein also was well known in his time, little of his prolific output remains today. What a shame! His represented work, Ich schlafe, aber mein Herz wachet, based on a text from the Song of Songs, combines expertly crafted instrumental subtlety with operatic duet writing worthy of Monteverdi. I especially enjoyed how tenor Harry Geraert's relentless calls "Tu mir auf, meine Freundin" (Open up to me, my lady!) eventually find little reprieve, rendered in the lusty solace of the final line "Ja, ja ich komme in meinen Garten" (Yes, yes, I'm coming into my garden).
Equally satisfying are the Canzoni by Dietrich Becker and a rare "T'Andernaken" by Flemish vocal master Jacob Obrecht, the only instrumental works represented. About five years ago I was fortunate enough to happen on another CPO CD devoted entirely to Becker (still available!), a charming collection of his Suites and Sonatas beautifully performed by Parnassi Musici--so these Canzoni are especially welcome. While these quiet gems again derive their original inspiration from Italian models, Becker's counter-melodies, particularly in the strings, owe more to northern folk dance than to the Venetian court in the south. Obrecht's arrangement of the popular Flemish folk song "T'Andernaken" is as inventive as it is unusual, a spirited tune that must have provided Hanseatic town pipers many opportunities to demonstrate their virtuosity. CPO's sound is exemplary, with the performers all sufficiently detailed yet never unnaturally highlighted. Also, the outstanding collective Weser-Renaissance Bremen and its director Manfred Cordes deliver peerless, expert performances. Heartily recommended, especially to adventurous Renaissance music enthusiasts who delight in discovering off-the-beaten-path treasures.

Many will best remember Malcolm Morley from his tenure in Man, a band he toured and recorded with in the mid-1970s. He features on their highly acclaimed 1974 album, the Roy Thomas Baker-produced 'Rhinos, Winos and Lunatics' - considered by many to be their finest work.
But that wasn't Malcolm's recording debut by any means - that came a few years earlier with cult favourites, Help Yourself, a band he steered to four highly acclaimed albums on UA and a live performance at the first ever Glastonbury festival in 1971. With John Peel dubbing Malcolm "a mad mutant about town," his musical talents were soon in demand with everyone from genre-defining pub rockers Bees Make Honey, to Kirsty MacColl, Deke Leonard and Wreckless Eric.
As part of Wreckless Eric's band he was part of the infamous Be Stiff Route '78 tour, which in true Stiff style toured the UK travelling by train! Following another semi-chaotic Stiff adventure in the USA Malcolm went into semi-retirement, restricting his musical activities to just two solo albums in the following decades - the evocative 'Lost & Found' (recorded with the help of Plummet Airlines) and the groundbreaking 'Aliens' - alongside the issue of Help Yourself's legendary lost album '5'.
Much to the delight of his fans, more recent years have seen Malcolm rediscover his mojo, re-joining Man as part of their touring line-up and performing a series of solo gigs in and around his north London home. In 2019 came the news everyone had been waiting for, a new album of exquisite Morley compositions, the achingly beautiful 'Infinity Lake'.
Released at the end of 2019, that album has inspired Malcolm to form The Infinity Lake Band. Their live debut is at the Half Moon on 16 February 2020. It is a date that Malcolm's fans have long anticipated and will look forward to with relish.

Alexander "Sandy" Nuttgens (born 1964), is a British composer and a member of the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters.
He is principally known for scoring television programmes mainly in the realm of children's TV and documentaries. He has scored numerous BAFTA and Royal Television Society winners and nominees including My Parents Are Aliens for Granada, Timelines for October Films and Shakespeare Shorts for the BBC. In 2008 he scored his first feature film 'The Blue Tower'which won Best UK Film at the London Raindance Film Festival.
In children's television he scored the music for series 2 of Postman Pat SDS for Classic Media, and Big & Small, Get Well Soon and Dinopaws for Kindle Entertainment. Both Postman Pat and Dinopaws were nominated in the 2014 BAFTA Children's Awards.
In 2007 Nuttgens won an RTS Yorkshire Region Award for Best Music for his score for Terry Jones' Barbarians for Oxford Films and the BBC. He was nominated for RTS Best Music for 'The Rise and Fall of Tony Blair' for Channel4 in 2008, and in 2010 he won an RTS Award for Best Music for 'The Queen in 3D' for Renegade Films.
Nuttgens has a long-term relationship as principal composer for Yorkshire's national touring young peoples theatre company, Pilot Theatre . Their break-through production of Lord Of The Flies was nominated for a TMA Award in 1999 and won a Manchester Evening News Award for best production in 2001. Recent productions have included the stage premiere of Anne Cassidy's Looking For JJ and providing the opening show for the 2007 International Indian Film Academy film awards. In 2010 he scored Pilot's much acclaimed touring version of Romeo and Juliet, and co-wrote the title song 'Kiss By The Book' with Molly McQueen, daughter of Midge Ure.
Nuttgens was a founder member of UK dance act Skipraiders, which was signed to Paul Oakenfold and his Perfecto Records label. He also has a long-term writing collaboration with UK Garage and reggae singer Sweetie Irie.
In 2004 Nuttgens led the campaign to establish the first Parent Promoted secondary school in the UK culminating in the opening of The Elmgreen School in 2007. He was the school's first Chair of Governors and Chair of the Parent Promoters Foundation.
Nuttgens is the son of academic and architect Patrick Nuttgens and the grandson of stained glass artist Joseph Edward Nuttgens. He is married to Actress and Voice-Over artist Claire Lacey and has three children.

Death Machine are releasing their 3rd album 'Orbit' on November 15. We are celebrating it with 3 exclusive release concerts in Copenhagen, Odense and Aarhus before the band is going on a bigger release tour in Denmark, Austria and Germany in the beginning of 2020.
While the two first singles from the new album 'Isle of Mine' and 'Mask' was on rotation on the Danish National Radio, and the 3rd single 'Alien' was a minor radio hit in Germany, the 4th single 'Someday' is well on its way to orbit around the airwaves leading the way for the new album.
Death Machine, has previously been very succesful with songs 'Bleak' and 'Cocoon', from their previous album. Both were among the most played songs on the Danish National Radio in 2017. This time we find them experimenting more with their soundscape drawing lines back in time, into the jungle and to the infinite universe.
Inspired and influenced by organic hiphop beats and singer/songwriters of the 70's, the sound of Death Machine is still tied together by Jesper's fragile vocal, his personal lyrics and the Spanish guitar which has been the starting point for his songs ever since the first album was recorded in his kitchen.
Being in orbit around something that you never come into contact with. Connected and interacting with the phenomenon that can only be observed from a distance. This is the image of the alienated human and the theme throughout Death Machine's 3rd album 'Orbit'.
The songs are based on songwriter Jesper Mogensen's personal experiences and considerations, which are held in a cinematic universe of ambient soundscapes that helps the mind stray away from the "down-to-earth" atmosphere and even further into space. This way human emotions are placed in a larger universal context in which Death Machine creates a sound which is entirely their own, but at the same time hints towards 80's new age and 70's folk music. This combination characterizes the sound of Death Machine.
Death Machine and their new songs can be experienced live in Copenhagen, Odense and Aarhus in Denmark for three exclusive release concerts, before the tour continues to Austria and Germany in January 2020.
'Orbit' is out November 15 on Celebration Records on exclusive ltd. colored vinyl, a black standard vinyl and on all streaming services.
