Adam Lastiwka is a prolific composer for film and television based in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest. He is best known for his work on the globally renowned Netflix series TRAVELERS from STARGATE Creator and Writer Brad Wright, as well as the Emmy Nominated series INTERRUPT THIS PROGRAM.
Starting at the age of seventeen with a three-album record contract, Adam seated himself as a pioneer of the home-studio based recording movement, thriving within a complex and challenging industry. The raw, powerful, organic and unique arrangements he creates with his distinct musical palette garnered attention, at a very young age, from Producers and Directors worldwide, earning him a diverse range of internationally broadcasted series, and to this day has contributed music to more than five hundred (and counting) episodes of television, documentaries, feature films and advertisements.
His fresh, unique and collaborative approach to scoring and composition always lends itself to a heightened final product in whatever context he's working. Adam believes in delivering the most custom tailored scores to all of his clients, and in keeping with that goal, he has dedicated himself to learning the widest variety of musical instruments from all corners of the globe. While he is definitely an advocate of technology and is happy to utilize it in his productions, the artificiality and staleness it can yields, as well as the lack of personalization to the client has made him utilize it only the most transparent capacity that is necessary.

One of Mickie Most's numerous UK successes on the RAK Records label in the 70s, this pop outfit was formed in 1976 from the ashes of the unsuccessful Phoenix Press. The line-up featured Richard Gower (b. 1955, Hackney, London, England; vocals/keyboards), Phil Fursdon (vocals/guitar), Pete Miller (vocals/bass) and Clive Wilson (vocals/drums). After playing extensively round the pub circuits, an early supporter called Steve Matthews brought Racey to the attention of Most in London. He quickly signed them after hearing a demo, and they released their debut 'Baby It's You', written by Chris Norman and Pete Spencer of Smokie, which narrowly missed the charts. However, they got their hit with second single, 'Lay Your Love On Me' (written by Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn), which rose to number 3 in the UK charts in early 1979. Another Chapman/Chinn composition 'Some Girls' went one place better in March, but after two more Top 30 hits, including a cover version of Dion's 'Runaround Sue', the race was over. Lead singer Richard Gower worked as a songwriter for RAK during the 80s before re-forming Racey in the early 90s. This line-up of the band recorded several new songs for 1995's Say Wow! Greatest & Latest. They remain a popular draw on the European nostalgia circuit.

It sometimes seems that many Baroque violinists never would have had careers as "normal" violinists--but this is certainly not the case with Rachel Podger. Although some of her work in music later than the Baroque period is less than convincing in its approach, there's no question that she's a top-notch musician, and she's never made a finer (or smarter) recording than this. It's a pleasure from first note to last.
First of all, it's great seeing the two canonic Bach violin concertos not coupled with the usual "double" violin concerto (with the soloist playing both parts, of course). Instead, Podger offers transcriptions of two keyboard concertos, neither of which is usually thought to have been originally written for the violin. This makes less of a difference than you might think. The low tessitura of BWV 1055 may not offer Podger much of a technical challenge, but the sonorities recall the two strings-only Brandenburgs, and there are moments, such as her entry at the start of the finale, that are simply magical.
Both this work and BWV 1056 were likely composed for oboe (or oboe d'amore), but again, the delicious pizzicato Largo of the G minor concerto sounds wonderfully fresh and charming with a violin as soloist, and I don't miss the honking and clicking of the usual Baroque oboe one bit. Which brings us to the next issue: Podger plays all of this music immaculately, with characterful ornamentation and (thank God) enough vibrato to achieve a distinctive cantabile tone, especially in the slow movements. Her moderate tempos in the allegros (the term means "lively"--not "like a bat out of hell", as some authenticists apparently think) allow her to phrase the melodies with confidence, interact with and play off of the orchestra, and prevent Bach's chugging rhythms from turning mechanical.
Brecon Baroque numbers just six players aside from Podger, which means essentially one player to a part. Yet the result never sounds thin or dry, thanks in large part to Channel Classics' stunningly natural, warm SACD engineering (marvelous in regular stereo or multichannel formats). Also, and this really is a big deal, continuo player Christopher Bucknall uses a gentle, pleasant-toned instrument that never swamps the strings. The result is a true "chamber concerto" experience, an exquisite dialog that the players clearly relish while preserving the essential contrast between solo and tutti on which the concerto form depends. Highest recommendation.

Producer Creed Taylor has inspired everything from praise to anger among jazz fans. His work has been brilliant at times, detrimental at others (his worst flaw being a tendency to overproduce). Taylor plays a mostly positive role on La Cuna, a jazz-oriented effort uniting Ray Barretto with such first-class talent as Tito Puente (timbales) and the late Joe Farrell (tenor & soprano sax, flute). As slick as things get at times on La Cuna, Taylor wisely gives the players room to blow on everything from the haunting "Doloroso" and the driving "Cocinando" (a piece by Carlos Franzetti that shouldn't be confused with Barretto's major salsa/cha-cha hit) to a somewhat Gato Barbieri-ish take on Mussorgsky's "The Old Castle." Barretto successfully moves into soul territory on Stevie Wonder's "Pastime Paradise" (which rapper Coolio recast as his hit "Gangsta's Paradise" in 1994). Barretto may hate the term "Latin jazz," but make no mistake: La Cuna is one of his most memorable contributions to that genre.

Falling is an impressive debut album, particularly for a singer/songwriter who didn't even start guitar lessons or writing songs until she was almost thirty. Most debuts are derivative of or at least readily comparable to bigger names, but it's hard to place Damon next to any convenient benchmarks. The confident layered production and mix of pop smarts with artiness recalls Kate Bush in sensibility, perhaps, though Damon's voice doesn't sound at all like Bush's, and her material is less pretentious. While the songs tend toward the gently melodic side and the lyrics toward the give-and-take struggles of romantic and sexual relationships, there's an uneasy kick to the way they're spun, perhaps influenced by her own extensive academic work in psychology. Her voice has an appealing shy sultriness, and while her foreign accent is noticeable, actually it sounds kind of cool, without impeding the vocal clarity. Her stance is one of offering intimacy that's both inviting and unsettling, the lyrics of "Naughty" in particular hinting at the dark side of attraction, plaintively asking "why is it hard to see the worst in me?" as if that's exactly what she wants to show off. Leaving aside the interpersonal dynamics of the compositions, on a sheer sonic level the production is quite pleasurable, gracefully blending in touches of orchestration, psychedelia, slide guitar, and quite late-'60s Beatles-ish strings. Some of the fresher indie rock of the early 2000s came from Israel, and this is an honorable entry into that field, yet more admirable in that (unlike some of the other better Israeli indie rock of the period) it doesn't lean heavily on retro- psychedelia or 1960s-indebted approaches.
