Biography:

IÂ’m an Australian aged 28, born in Smithton, a small town in north-west Tasmania, but now living in South Australia. I enjoyed all the benefits of a Catholic education: that is, I left school able to read and write, only mildly psychopathic and with a good working knowledge of masturbation. After a couple of years at university, where I achieved mediocre results and learned to drink, I spent about 10 years as an unskilled labourer in various parts of the country. At different times I was a fitterÂ’s assistant, a fruit picker, a shunter (google it), and a clerk. IÂ’ve worked in a wool store, a supermarket, a pea cannery, a steelworks, a spark plug factory, a tin mine, an iron ore processing plant and on a motor vehicle assembly line. IÂ’ve mixed various bituminous emulsions and a range of additives for concrete. IÂ’ve been a member of the Wool and Basil WorkersÂ’ Union, the Australian Railways Union, the Australian WorkersÂ’ Union, the Federated IronworkersÂ’ Association and the Storemen and PackersÂ’ Union. Most of those organisations are now defunct, some of them for reasons not associated with my membership. In 1977 I took a day off from my job in a shoe polish factory to sit a competitive examination for admission to the Victorian public service. Shortly afterwards I found myself in the State Health Department paying subsidies to kindergartens. Following a series of events that are too boring even for me to relate, I wound up working for the Medical Board and subsequently for the Psychologists Registration Board and the Dental Practice Board. Eventually I moved here to South Australia and, in time, became CEO of the South Australian Branch of the Australian Dental Association. IÂ’ve now retired (though IÂ’d take work if I could get it). IÂ’m interested in history, literature (especially poetry and fiction), sport (especially horse racing, cricket and Australian Rules football), politics (as a spectator sport) and most social issues.
