    pdf | 58.42 MB | English | Isbn:‎ 978-8785180056 | Author: Ole Crumlin-Pedersen | Year: 2010

    Description:

Half a century ago, archaeology entered a new field of work with the excavation of ancient ships found under water. A new discipline emerged: maritime archaeology. In this book, Ole Crumlin-Pedersen, the Danish pioneer of maritime archaeology, gives a fascinating overview of more than forty of years of work. Beginning with the natural conditions for seafaring, the author explains the evolution of basic water craft into those plank-built, sail-carrying ships which enabled the seaborne activities of the Viking Age and the following medieval periods, concluding with case studies of the maritime cultural landscape of Roskilde Fjord and the ship as symbol. The themes of this volume were first presented in six Rhind Lectures for the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland in Edinburgh in 2008.

    pdf | 7.65 MB | English | Isbn:‎ 0367775484 | Author: Hannah Amaris Roh | Year: 2022

    Description:

One of the first philosophical approaches to the study of Korea's ethnic nationalism, Christianity, the Sovereign Subject, and Ethnic Nationalism in Colonial Korea traces the impact of Christianity in the formation of Korean national identity, outlining the metaphysical origins of the concept of the sovereign subject.

This monograph takes a meta-historical approach and engages the moral questions of Korean historiography amid the fraught politics of narrating colonialism and the postcolonial period. Indebted to Jacques Derrida's philosophy of deconstruction and his framework of "hauntology," this monograph unpacks the ethical consequences of ethnic nationalism, exploring how Western metaphysics has haunted imaginations of freedom in colonial Korea. While most studies of modern Korean nationalism and (post)colonialism have taken a cultural, literary, or social scientific approach, this book draws on the thought of Jacques Derrida to offer an innovative intellectual history of Korea's colonial period. By deconstructing the metaphysical claims of turn-of-the-century Protestant missionaries and early modern Korean intellectuals, the book showcases the relevance of Derrida's philosophical method in the study of modern Korean history.

This is a must read for scholars interested in Derrida, historiography, and Korean history.

    Description:

"A marvelous book. Constantine at the Bridge is an engaging and beautifully written study of a pivotal moment in Roman and European history." -Mark Felton, author of Castle of the Eagles: Escape from Mussolini's Colditz
The AD 312 Battle of the Milvian Bridge, just outside Rome, marked the start of a monumental change for Rome and her empire. This battle was the figurative bridge between old pagan Rome and new Christian Rome. And once Constantine had crossed that bridge, there was no turning back.
After winning this battle against his brother-in-law Maxentius and taking power at Rome, Constantine the Great-strongly influenced by his mother-forcefully steered Romans away from the traditional worship of their classical gods toward Christianity, setting Rome on two paths: the adoption of Christianity as the state religion, and the relegation of the city of Rome to obscurity as the Western Roman Empire collapsed within 175 years.

    pdf | 4.47 MB | English | Isbn:‎ B01N0Y8D95 | Author: Ranjan Roy | Year: 2017

    Description:

This thorough work presents the fundamental results of modular function theory as developed during the nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. It features beautiful formulas and derives them using skillful and ingenious manipulations, especially classical methods often overlooked today. Starting with the work of Gauss, Abel, and Jacobi, the book then discusses the attempt by Dedekind to construct a theory of modular functions independent of elliptic functions. The latter part of the book explains how Hurwitz completed this task and includes one of Hurwitz's landmark papers, translated by the author, and delves into the work of Ramanujan, Mordell, and Hecke. For graduate students and experts in modular forms, this book demonstrates the relevance of these original sources and thereby provides the reader with new insights into contemporary work in this area.

    pdf | 1.69 MB | English | Isbn:‎ 1316515125 | Author: Gustavo A. Flores-Mac?as | Year: 2022

    Description:

If economic elites are notorious for circumventing tax obligations, how can institutionally weak governments get the wealthy to shoulder a greater tax burden? This book studies the factors behind the adoption of elite taxes for public safety purposes. Contrary to prominent explanations in the literature on the fiscal strengthening of the state - including the role of resource dependence and inequality - the book advances a theory of elite taxation that focuses on public safety crises as windows of opportunity and highlights the importance of business-government linkages to overcome mistrust toward government from corruption and lack of accountability. Based on evidence from across Latin America and rich case studies from experiences in Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Mexico, the book provides scholars and policymakers with a blueprint for contemporary state-building efforts in the developing world.

    epub, azw3 | 1.17 MB | English | Isbn:‎ B0851XB27N | Author: Richard Fogarty | Year: 2020

    Description:

A selection of recent Hollywood products are deconstructed in order to reveal the very striking aspects of social engineering propaganda which permeate and define them. This supports the far-reaching revelation that all Hollywood products are created primarily, if not solely, for this purpose, in support of a wider, 'liberal' ideology which remains constantly at work to overthrow the old world order and lead us into the gulag of totalitarianism.

A discussion touching on the thorny issues of contemporary leftism, the role of human intention, and intersectional taxonomy, as they relate to the movies, is followed by an itemisation of the true content of some major box office successes, categorising this as a finite and exclusive set of pernicious Narratives which work symbiotically with the storylines, revealing the works as masterpieces not only of escapist entertainment, but also of social engineering of the highest order.

If you have ever wondered about the extent to which Hollywood has another agenda besides turning a profit in a global market, why this would be the case, and what it might mean for the present and future of humanity, this text may be worth looking into. More importantly, if you have started to find the movies dull or predictable, this insight not only provides the reason for this, but is also a sure way to make all your future viewing an empowering and enriching experience.
