Marrying Waldman's sound with the inestimable Muscle Shoals musicians, Gypsy Symphony is a funky, shimmering delight, and other artists weren't slow to notice. "My Love Is All I Know," "The Good Love" and "Mad Mad Me" were recorded by Melissa Manchester, Percy Sledge and Maria Muldaur, respectively. The latter, in particular, showcases Waldman as a more accessible, more accommodating Laura Nyro, and possibly a more deft pianist, too. Most compositions on the record flaunts unexpected chord progressions, adventurous time signatures, snappy horn charts and a maverick spirit that should have shone brightly among some of the bland embarrassments emerging from the West Coast scene at the time; a shame, then, that not many people noticed. ~by Charles Donovan

New York City's purveyors of noise White Suns have returned with a new full-length recording titled Psychic Drift. Following the deconstructed rock instrumentation of 2014's Totem, Dana Matthiessen and Kevin Barry continue their inexorable plunge into sonic abstraction. This latest album consists of four long-form compositions where synthesizers, field recordings, cut-up samples and lurching rhythms form a tapestry of shifting layers. The focus here is on texture and atmosphere, utilizing repurposed aspects of drone, industrial and harsh noise to create claustrophobic soundscapes that ripple and groan. White Suns has existed since 2006 and have released three full-length albums: Waking In The Reservoir (UgExplode, 2011), Sinews (Load, 2012) and Totem (The Flenser, 2014), along with a handful of small-run releases. Their material has received accolades from the New Yorker, SPIN, Pitchfork, and Tiny Mix Tapes among others. They've toured the U.S. extensively and garnered a reputation as a threatening and intense live act. White Suns make a habit of crushing your soul.

The Neapolitan Baroque, especially in the first half of the eighteenth century, was a vibrant and vital time for instrumental music, as Josetxu Obregón and La Ritirata now demonstrate with their new recording of six concertos from that era. The Neapolitan school - which owed so much in its formation to Francesco Provenzale - flourished in the hands of Francesco Mancini, Nicola Porpora, Nicola Fiorenza, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi and Alessandro Scarlatti, all represented with concertos on this new Glossa recording.
The four major conservatories in the city created an astonishingly productive and innovative environment for musicians - students and their teachers alike. The composers here all studied or worked in the conservatories or at the Cappella Real. The Neapolitan concerto had its own structure at this time, which was quite different to that found in the Venice of Vivaldi, and there was a constant competitive spirit for soloists to demonstrate their virtuosity. As they showed with their earlier Glossa recording of Il Spiritillo Brando, the members of La Ritirata are more than a match for their Neapolitan predecessors in both stylishness and technique. The soloists gathered by Josetxu Obregón represent some of the leading musical lights in Spain today: violinist Hiro Kurosaki (in a Fiorenza concerto), recorder-player Tamar Lalo (Scarlatti and Mancini), harpsichordists Ignacio Prego and Daniel Oyarzabal (Pergolesi) and not least, Obregón himself who is the cello soloist in works by Fiorenza and Porpora.

From the shores of Jersey to the clubs of Britain, the Billy Walton band have been kicking around for ten years. Billy Walton himself has played with Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes, and his band really reflect that soulful rock and blues sound. His guitar playing is second to none and it's a combination of rock and soul blended together like that of no other, yet it's done traditionally enough to sound familiar to the masses.
This is a mighty road-tested band and it shows in the live performance on this well-produced video clip. It kicks off with Walton looking dark and mysterious with a black background as he enters the picture in a black suit, strapped with an orange sunburst Les Paul. The lighting effects are great as the horns come in and give it a swampy groove that doesn't quit, with the horns going onto add just the right flavor to stand apart for ordinary blues-rock. They really do bring the bottom end the track needs to make it taste so different around Walton's blazing guitar which allowed plenty of room to shine.
It's not hard to tell within the first few bars how playing with the likes of Southside Johnny, but he makes that style his own, and the band backs him without losing a step. The music sounds like a natural progression from the last album "Wish For What You Want" - produced by Tony Braunagel in 2015. But it's everything to be expected for any fans looking for the next level of Billy Walton's chops. It delivers in both the songwriting and playing department by all in involved in this rocking, soulful romp. There's no holding back in the energy department as the rhythm section and horns spar for the spotlight.
The influence of the New Jersey sound is something you can't miss from this band, and that doesn't come without the mention of Bruce Springsteen, but also Count Basie and the rest who forged the sound of that area so long ago. Billy Walton and his band carry on in that same tradition with the live show being the main means of constant work, touring all over the US and the UK. The new album marks a fresh perspective with new tracks for the stage, and the video for "Hell Or Highwater" helps preview what's to come when they hot the road in support of it.
There is no denying how tight they are, and this is a track to showcase their talents with Walton up front, leading the way with tons of swagger. And when I say it has a swampy sound, just imagine a "Jim Dandy To The Rescue" shuffle, mixed with an epic, sizzling hot, Jeff Healey style guitar solo. And make no mistake, Billy Walton keeps up with the best of 'em as he takes this track over with a monster prowess, and the rest is gravy, as they say. It comes recommended for all that and more, as even hardcore blues lovers can find much to enjoy about such an honest, top shelf piece of work. ~Mindy McCall

Blue Haze celebrate their blues passion since the year 2000. Rough, earthy and direct, just as he should be and as everyone loves him, the band Blue Haze brings the blues with crisp solos and a "dirty blues tube" on the stage.
With traditional Chicago Blues, Texas Shuffles, Rhythm & Blues and Blues Rock, the band Blue Haze serves the Weidener guitarist Günter Hagn and the singer and blues harp player Andi Doerfler all varieties of this rousing musical style. With Paul Grötsch (bass) and Andreas Bauer (drums) at their side, the exceptional musicians deliver not only blues classics but also their own songs of the very finest.
Since the CD Release Tour 2017, the Dutch professional keyboardist Menno Stuifmeel completes the band.
A highlight of the numerous concerts and festivals of the band was certainly the concert at the Kitchenclub Nabburg, where the actually occurring as a supporting band Blue Haze short hand by the old master of the blues, Louisiana Red, was brought to the stage on this then over two hours as To support the accompanying band.
Quotation The New Day: "Two hours in which the Blueser from Upper Palatinate followed the big, old man with concentration, fabulous empathy and enormous playfulness on all musical paths, as devious as they were sometimes. A brilliant achievement. "
Another highlight in the band's history were performances together with Ana Popovic, Bernard Allison, Marla Glen, Dani Wilde, Hannes Ringlstetter and Lake. ~Google translation from German.

With the release of her debut album, Beware Of My Dog, Carolyn Gaines has revealed herself to be a blues singer of purpose. She is joined by guitarist Fred Clark, Glen Doll on harmonica, organist Rudy Copeland, bassist Del Atkins and drummer Chad Wright with her cousin, tenor-saxophonist Grady Gaines Jr., performing on two numbers. Special guest is the legendary Big Jay McNeely, who plays tenor on three other selections. The recording is engineered and mixed by Bill Dashiell, who worked the same magic on Carl Carlton's She's A Bad Mama Jama, produced by the late great Leon Haywood. The album is mastered by Robert Honablue, who was the studio recording engineer on projects by Dave Brubeck, Miles Davis, Janis Joplin, Barbra Streisand, Ike & Tina Turner, George Benson, Hubert Laws, Carlos Santana and many other major names.
It is obvious from the beginning of the opener 'Beware Of My Dog,' that Carolyn Gaines is both a student of the blues from earlier eras and a singer, who does not copy her predecessors. The tune has a connection to Big Mama Thornton's & Elvis Presley's 'Hound Dog' and a 1950s blues vibe. However, Ms. Gaines' voice sounds unlike anyone else. Big Jay McNeely's short solo, which features his distorted tone, fits the song well. The lowdown one-chord blues 'I'm Your Cat, Baby' has Carolyn Gaines displaying a menacing, yet alluring, voice similar to the 1961 'Back Door Man' by Howlin' Wolf, with its growls and rasps. 'Stone Out Your Raggly Mind,' akin to Jimmy Reed's 1960s hit 'What You Want Me To Do,' is an infectious Chicago blues featuring Grady Gaines Jr. on his tenor sax. Listen to how the singer's bent notes sound as natural as talking. 'Catch That Train,' inspired by John Lee Hooker's 1962 'Boom Boom,' has the vocalist having a call and response with the band during the first section, before it becomes a cooking blues number.
Carolyn Gaines transforms Muddy Waters' Chess Records 'I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man' into 'Hoochie Coochie Woman,' modernizing and revising the lyrics into a version that Muddy Waters would have enjoyed. David Junior Kimbrough's 'Done Got Old' is an intense country blues given a fresh new spin, intimate but quietly fiery with its own brand of restrained passion. On the lowdown blues 'I Want Your Money Honey,' Carolyn Gaines sounds quite dangerous (a little like Ma Rainey), a bit demanding and exciting, growling up a storm. One knows that she is going to get the money!
The singer's 'Mr. Dill Pickle' (inspired by Blind Boy Fuller's 'I Want A Piece Of Your Pie' from 1939) is good time blues where her lyrics sound topical and contemporary. The performance with Glen Doll's harmonica has the flavor of a 1930s Chicago blues jam session. 'Jerry Rice - Busy Man' is a country blues dedicated to the great football player: inspired by first-class father & son Carey & Lurrie Bell's style of harmonica & guitar. There are lots of appealing bent notes from Carolyn Gaines along with some fine harmonica playing from Doll. 'Charlie Mae & Chicago'' dedicated to her mom Charlie Mae & Buddy Guy has some highly expressive singing. The closer, a remake of the Big Jay McNeely's hit 'Something On Your Mind,' is an excellent revival that features a haunting, catchy bass line of Dale Atkins, along with strong contributions from Ms. Gaines' vocals - sexy, smooth, passionate in a deep slightly-alluring-updated way - and McNeely blows the roof off his 1959 hit song.
Formerly behind the scenes, Carolyn Gaines shows on Beware Of My Dog that she is ready to take the blues center-stage! ~Scott Yanow

As the driving force behind Chilliwack during their illustrious career, Bill Henderson knew that music was his calling early in life. The native of Vancouver was already a working musician while still in high school. He was a student at UBC in 1966 when he joined the group, The Collectors. While spending a whole lot of time in California they were signed to a record deal. After a pair of albums and a string of radio singles between '67 and '69, including "Lydia Purple" and "Early Morning," which found them touring with the likes of The Doors and Jefferson Airplane, The Collectors were dead, Henderson was living in Vancouver - and from the ashes rose Chilliwack.
The band was rounded out by fellow ex-Collectors - drummer Ross Turney, Claire Lawrence on sax and keyboards and Glen Miller on bass. They cut their self-titled debut (also unofficially referred to as MASK because of the African head dress on the cover) in late '70 on the independant Parrot Records. "Chain Train" was the first single, followed by "Rain O," inspired by an Albert King show Henderson saw in San Francisco and a First Nations painting. Other noteable tracks included "Sundown" and "Everyday," the next two singles to come off the record. "We recorded that record in 36 hours, recorded and mixed, the whole thing. We'd never done that before, or since," Henderson reminisced.
But Miller dropped out and after picking up Robbie King and Rick Kilburn for various portions of their tours, the band was on the road non-stop, making stops throughout Canada, into the US, and the 1970 Expo in Japan. Once they came home, Miller soon dropped out, but they carried on - across Canada, to Japan, and all points in between.

Chilliwack is a double album by the Canadian rock band Chilliwack, released in September 1971. It was their second album, and their second to be entitled Chilliwack. It included the top-10 (in Canada) hit "Lonesome Mary".
Following the release of their previous album, the band were dropped by Parrot Records and bassist Glenn Miller departed the group temporarily. Shortly thereafter, the group signed with A&M Records.
Generally better known for their late 70's AOR albums, this group was one of the earliest Canadian prog groups since they were directly descending from the 60's group THE COLLECTORS which had released a mind-blowing debut album and an confirming second effort, before changing their name to CHILLIWACK, their hometown's name in British Columbia. Both albums are included in the proto-prog section of the database. As the group had encountered some success in the late 60's (both as an album but also a single's band), the group felt they had to modernize their name, image and contracts. But in the essence the group remained quasi-intact and given the changing of the times, their first album under their new name became a bit looser and less structured. The music became more dreamy and sometimes involving long improvisation (but never becoming a jam band), bordering on the psychedelic prog with Claire Lawrence's saxes and flutes giving loving caresses to your eardrums.
Gradually, as the key members will float away and leave the ship, the sound (which had a distinct west coast touch) shifted more and more towards typical late 70's AOR with a slight country rock touch. The group will end its career in the early 80's in the general indifference after a string of unremarkable (from our point of view) string of albums. The band went on to become Headpins with a huge ard rock sound.

From his very first surviving work, a fantasy, to the masterpieces composed in the year of his death in 1828, Schubert left more than thirty-five scores for piano four hands. He imposed drama, grandeur and virtuosity on the genre, suspending time to follow the rhythm of his eternal traveller's footsteps. For more than 20 years now, in intense symbiosis, Claire Désert and Emmanuel Strosser have been exploring together the unique world of Schubert's piano duets.

Indulging for the first time in Cockney Rebel's debut album -- and one uses the word "indulging" deliberately, for like so much else that's this delicious, you cannot help but feel faintly sinful when it's over -- is like waking up from a really weird dream, and discovering that reality is weirder still. A handful of Human Menagerie's songs are slight, even forced, and certainly indicative of the group's inexperience. But others -- the labyrinthine "Sebastian," the loquacious "Death Trip" in particular -- possess confidence, arrogance, and a doomed, decadent madness which astounds. Subject to ruthless dissection, Steve Harley's lyrics were essentially nonsense, a stream of disconnected images whose most gallant achievement is that they usually rhyme. But what could have been perceived as a weakness -- or, more generously, an emotionally overwrought attempt to blend Byron with Burroughs -- is actually their strength. Few of the songs are about anything in particular. But with Roy Thomas Baker's sub-orchestral production driving strings and things to unimaginable heights, and Cockney Rebel's own unique instrumentation -- no lead guitar, but a killer violin -- pursuing its own twisted journey, those images gel more solidly than the best constructed story. The Human Menagerie is a dark cabaret -- the darkest. Though Harley has furiously decried the band's historical inclusion in the glam rock pack, there's no separating the nocturnal theatrics of "Muriel the Actor," "Mirror Freak," or "What Ruthy Said" from at least the fringes of the movement. The difference is, other artists simply sung about absinthe and Sweet Ipomoea. Harley actually knew what they were. Unquestionably, he drew from many of the same literary, artistic, and celluloid sources as both David Bowie and Bryan Ferry, the only performers who could reasonably claim to have preempted his vision. But he went far beyond them, through the Berlin of Isherwood to the reality of the Weimar; past the Fritz Lang movies which everyone's seen, to the unpublished screenplays which no one has read. And though Harley might not have been the first cultural genius of his age, he was the first who wasn't content to simply zap the prevailing zeitgeist. He wanted to suck out its soul. And he very nearly succeeded.

Denver dude Daniel Goldstein has previously delivered a swathe of quietly confident releases on such labels as Anjunabeat, Suara and, most recently, This Never Happened. Here, he returns to action with sophomore set Little By Little (his debut LP, Rise, dropped in 2015). As with his previous works, Goldstein places emphasis on rich melodies and warm synthesizer refrains, rather than any particular style or sub-genre. The result is a hugely attractive and listenable collection that gently floats between hazy downtempo grooves, luscious left-of-centre synth-pop, simmering but saucer-eyed house, tactile slow jams and, in a couple of notable cases, vintage progressive house.

After moving to Los Angeles from Stockton, CA, Dirk Hamilton attracted the attention of Steely Dan producer Gary Katz, who in turn helped him sign a deal with ABC Records. The result, the Katz-produced You Can Sing on the Left or Bark on the Right, is a quirky if occasionally misguided work, with moments of brilliance. Katz brought in a host of session pros, including Chuck Rainey, Elliott Randall, and Jeff Porcaro -- all of whom had previously worked with him on various Steely Dan projects -- to flesh out Hamilton's idiosyncratic, acoustic-based tunes. And while these great players are perfect for Steely Dan's sophisticated pop/rock, they don't really do much for the material here. Hamilton sounds loose and playful throughout, while the backing seems somewhat flat and lifeless. Still, what makes You Can Sing truly worthwhile, and distinguishes it from the other singer/songwriter recordings bombarding the industry at the time, is masterful songwriting like the terrific "She Don't Squash Bugs," the detailed melancholy of "Wasn't That One Night Good," and the opening track, "The Sweet Forever." It would take Hamilton a couple of years to find the perfect setting for his songs but, nonetheless, his sharp wit, keen insight, and unique style are evident throughout You Can Sing on the Left or Bark on the Right. ~by Brett Hartenbach

Though they only lasted a duration of three records, the Larsen/Feiten Band left an imprint on soft rock fans and garnered a cult following overseas. In 2005, Wounded Bird reissued their first two records on one disc, much to the delight of fans who didn't want to pay lucrative amounts of money for the vinyl versions or settle for a lower-quality bootlegged compact disc. The results -- 16 tracks of moderate soft rocking -- are well produced and haven't aged too badly. Neil Larsen and Buzz Feiten's harmonies and songwriting skills are like Chicago and Steely Dan, but grittier. It gets a bit long in the tooth for casual listeners, but fans of the group will find this remastered disc long overdue and a pleasantly smooth listen from start to finish. ~by Rob Theakston

Artist Biography by Bruce Eder
The Dirty Blues Band was a white blues outfit best known as the stamping grounds, for a time, for Rod Piazza and Glenn Ross Campbell. The group was spawned in Riverside, CA, from a convergence of members of a handful of notable local outfits -- their rhythm section, John Millikan (drums) and Les Morrison (bass), were high school classmates who'd previously played in the L-J's, whence also came keyboard player Pat Moloney. The L-J's had started out playing jazz in 1964, but by the end of 1965 had evolved into the Mystics, a much more blues-focused outfit, whose ranks included Bob Sandell on rhythm guitar and Rod Piazza on lead vocals and harp. Their main influences were such British Invasion bands as Them (whose "Mystic Eyes" had provided their name), the Animals, the Yardbirds, and the Rolling Stones -- although nominally a blues band, their sound was really more an amalgam of blues and R&B as done by those groups
That all changed when Piazza and a couple of his bandmates went to a performance by the Byrds at The Trip in Los Angeles, where the opening act was the still mostly unknown Paul Butterfield Blues Band. What they saw and heard that night convinced the Mystics, especially Piazza, that they had to switch over to playing a purer form of blues. They ceased being the Mystics, taking on the name House of DBS (meaning Dirty Blues Sound) in 1966. There followed a lot of gigs in and around Los Angeles, where they honed their new sound and also lost their original lead guitarist, Jeff Ray -- in his place, Piazza recruited a friend of his from a band he'd once hung out with, the Misunderstood, named Glenn Ross Campbell. The Misunderstood had broken up and he was available and willing, and once he joined, the group's sound fairly blossomed, as Campbell became known for stretching out on his solos and improvisations for long minutes at their shows.
By the summer of 1967, with the beginnings of a serious rock music press, the House of DBS was getting proper coverage, and by the end of that season, they had a management and production deal with Lee Magid, who was best known in the business at that time as the manager of singer Della Reese. Magid produced their debut album and sold it to ABC Records, also facilitating a name-change to the Dirty Blues Band. Their self-titled debut album appeared in early 1968 on the ABC imprint Bluesway, and although the members weren't entirely happy with the results of the two days of rushed recording, they seemed to have a promising future ahead of them. The military draft then reared its ugly head, and suddenly Millikan, Morrison, and Sandell -- the group's whole rhythm section -- were called up. Campbell exited by choice a little while later, seeing no future for the group. Ironically, they did carry on, however, with Rick Lunetta (guitar), Greg Anderson (bass), and Dave Miter (drums). That group, augmented by trumpet man Freddie Hill and saxmen Jimmy Forrest and Willie Green, got a second album together, entitled Stone Dirt. But by the end of 1968, even that second lineup had collapsed, and all concerned were pursuing solo and new group projects. Piazza and Campbell were the most visible alumni and, indeed, their presence in the band accounts for a significant part of the interest in their work, on the part of people who never did get to hear the original albums.

Modular synthesizer enthusiast Drew McDowall is best known for his work with British industrial legends Coil during the '90s, although his career actually stretches back to the late '70s. The Scottish musician started post-punk band the Poems with his then-wife, Rose McDowall, in 1978. The group rarely gigged, as the Glasgow pub crowd wasn't especially interested in their music, and there wasn't anywhere else for the group to perform. McDowall subsequently moved to London and abandoned guitar-based music, becoming a part of the industrial community. He worked with Genesis P-Orridge and Psychic TV, and eventually joined Coil during the '90s, contributing to their remixes of Nine Inch Nails as well as the classic Musick to Play in the Dark album. McDowall left Coil and moved to New York City in 2000, becoming a fixture of the city's experimental music scene. He began a project called Captain Sons and Daughters with Kara Bohnenstiel, and later teamed up with Tres Warren of Psychic Ills to form Compound Eye. The group debuted in 2012 with the Origin of Silence LP on The Spring Press, which was followed by Journey from Anywhere, issued by Editions Mego. McDowall began performing solo at the urging of Long Distance Poison's Nathan Cearley, who invited him to perform at one of the quarterly Modular Solstice concerts in 2012. McDowall then became very active as a solo performer, and in 2015 Dais Records issued his debut solo full-length, Collapse. Two years later, the label released McDowall's second solo album, Unnatural Channel, which was mixed by Josh Eustis (Telefon Tel Aviv, Second Woman). ~ Paul Simpson.

If anyone is keeping the tradition of urban blues alive, it's Duke Robillard. Long thought of as a guitar wizard, he shows here why he's earned that distinction. The sparks fly as he shuffles, swings and crawls his way through a program of originals and obscure tunes by past masters. He plays "Never Let You Go," a Jimmy Liggins tune, like Magic Sam would have. It's a treat to hear someone not only reprising Sam, but doing it so well. "Gee I Wish," a jumping tune, could have come from the guitar of Junior Barnard fronting Bob Wills' Western swing band. Nobody recording today plays in the T-Bone Walker style as well as Duke. On "Glamour Girl," a slow blues, and "Don't Leave Me, Baby," a swinging number, he shows himself as the foremost practitioner of Walker's jazzy style. In the latter tune, he successfully shows off his Charlie Christian influence.

Francesco Antonio Bonporti (1672 - 1749): Motets for Solo Voice with Violin Accompaniment (1702), op.3, Nos. 1-6. Performed by Ellen Hargis, soprano, and Ensemble Ouabache [Christopher Verrette and Ingrid Matthews, violins; Shelley Taylor, violoncello; Catherine Liddell, theorbo; Thomas Gerber, organ]. Recorded at the Church of the Nativity in Indianapolis, Indiana, on 22nd to 25th January 1996. Published in 1998 as Dorian Discovery DIS-80163. Total playing time: 60'14".
The Italian baroque seems to be an inexhaustible quarry for lovers of historical performance practice and beautifully balanced music. Francesco Antonio Bonporti was a composer-priest who, after studies in Innsbruck and Rome, spent most of his working life in his home town of Trento, once host to the Tridentinum, but in the early eighteenth century nothing more than a provincial nest. Of his twelve published works (of which only nine are still extant), eleven consisted of instrumental music, leaving only the set of six solo motets recorded here and a rumoured, but not extant, mass as his complete vocal works. These motets are written for a small group such as would have been delighted to perform them in the provincial surroundings of Trento and elsewhere, possibly for performing nuns, a phenomenon which was apparently not all that uncommon at the time. Each motet consists of four or five "movements", alternating arias and recitatives; the Latin texts are devotional (Roman Catholic, of course); and the simple but haunting melodies are of exceptional beauty.
The performance by Ellen Hargis and the Indianapolis-based Ensemble Ouabache (named for the Wabash river) reflects both the serenity and beauty of these works. Ellen Hargis's pure, high soprano is given pride of place, so to speak, but the lovely instrumental accompaniment, although placed decently in the background, supports her in every way, making this a disc that fans of high baroque music will love. Ellen Hargis's voice is, of course, an early-music voice, she is not an opera singer, at least, not in the modern sense. But that is only to her advantage in this context, and the beauty of her singing coupled with Dorian's excellent engineering led a critic in Germany's "Klassik heute" magazine to give this CD the highest rating - which, in turn, led to me buying the disc, albeit it many years later.
The production is lovingly made, with a beautifully-printed English-language booklet. Unfortunately, there is one drop of wormwood: The track-listing is out-of-sync with what you hear; it appears that one of the four-movement motets has been given five tracks, whereas the closing "Alleluia" of the last of the recorded motets is not listed at all. This can be a little disconcerting, but it certainly does not detract from the beauty and serenity of a very special disc which does honour to the early music scene in Indiana and to the efforts of Sono Luminus-Dorian.

Of all the so-called minimalists working today, John Adams is the only one with any good ideas left. Witness this delightful release. The key to Adams's creativity is that he isn't bound by theoretical constraints on what "minimalism" should be. Century Rolls (1995) is a commission by Emanuel Ax, and it was inspired by the composer's listening to a CD recording of an ancient player piano. Century Rolls doesn't duplicate that sound, but it is, instead, an unexpected romp across new rhythmic territory. As for Mr. Ax, he comports himself very well, particularly in the difficult first Movement, which requires deft coordination of all forces involved. The brief Lollapalooza (1995) is more recognizably minimalist but with considerable orchestral color and shifting moods. And Slominsky's Earbox (1996) is a powerfully full-orchestra-driven canter. All this is to say that the CD is one of the best releases of Adams's career, and it will appeal to a very wide audience. -- Paul Cook

Heinrich Laufenberg lived and worked between c.1390 and 1460 in the Swiss canton of Argovia, southern Germany and Alsace. He was the author of a vast body of works, comprising spiritual hymns, didactic epics and religious prose. A manuscript housed in the Strasbourg Library, which took up the major part of his work, was completely destroyed in a fire in 1870. Happily, a copy had been made of it, so part of his oeuvre was able to be passed on to posterity. The surviving songs of Heinrich Laufenberg are of great beauty, in terms of both music and content: in one of them, he praises Mary in a thoroughly poetic way; in a lullaby, he asks Jesus' protection for the sleeping infant; in yet another, he describes for us the kingdom of heaven in detail and in all its richness.
This programme, entitled Royaume des cieux, offers us the joy of hearing songs that had remained silent since the 15th century. Between Laufenberg's lyrical and narrative songs are inserted instrumental pieces from the period. Thus, in an enthusiastic, authentic way, the ensemble Dragma gives life to the music of the late Middle Ages, in a glittering kaleidoscope.
Three highly-regarded musicians are at the heart of Ensemble Dragma: Agnieszka Budzińska-Bennett, Jane Achtman and Marc Lewon. Their flexible configuration (two voices, vielle, lute, and harp) allows them to bring the repertoire of the high and late Middle Ages to life, in all its colour and variety, for contemporary audiences.
Established in 2012, the group soon embarked on a tour of Germany, France and Switzerland with a programme entitled The Kingdom of Heaven. This is Ensemble Dragma's first CD.

The white-knuckle noise abstractions of Spanish sound artist Francisco Lopez rarely, if ever, resemble anything close to traditional (or even experimental) music forms. Concerned with the materiality of sound itself, Lopez's long-form, often hour-plus-length compositions explore the extremes of aural perception, from sub-audible field recordings to blistering slabs of white noise. The five-CD folio, THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, presents five different CD-length works recorded between 1993 and 2008, covering a diverse range of material from environmental recordings of South American rainforests to site-specific works made in New York City buildings.

With their new album "Until Better Times" the Leif de Leeuw Band presents a fresh sound with lots of influences from the seventies. After the success of their full length debut "Leelah" (2016) the band returns with a sizzling sophomore album. The single "Until Better Times" was released as an appetizer for the album in April. The fans loved it and the song has already been streamed well over 20.000 times.
The band worked two weeks in July 2017 with producer Jasper Ras, to come up with a sound that hints to Allman Brothers, Led Zeppelin or Blackberry Smoke and Henrik Freischlader. Think driving percussion, intense twin guitar leads, swinging blues riffs, pumping Hammond (and other organ sounds by guest Willem 't Hart).

Bryan Tewell Hughes combines ethereal Electronica with organic and acoustic elements to produce lush, detailed, enigmatic pieces. As a composer, musician, and audio craftsman, Hughes' vision is rich, attention-grabbing, and original; AeTopus albums are not mere collections of individual songs - they are flowing, thematic works of sonic art through which universal themes gently emerge with abstraction and sophistication.
Totem Totum takes the listener on an acoustic-electric journey through gentle pastoral scenes, primitive rituals, and moody planetscapes - A sonic exploration of humanity's inherent yearning for its own context. Goth, Berlin School, and film soundtrack roots lend color and texture to Bryan's spacious, high-fidelity style to reward both the casual listener and the headphone-wearer.

After one Demo and one 7" on Toxic State, Haram from Nuke York release their debut album on La Vida es un Mus (in Europe) and Toxic State (USA). Taking their name from the Arabic word for 'forbidden', Haram play simple hardcore with lyrics sung entirely in Arabic. The sound is agitated and slightly deranged which hints at both Japanese hardcore and classic 80's European hardcore. The songs are driven by a primitive drum sound, melodic guitar work and intense voacls by Lebanese frontman Nader. Haram stands out as one of the most culturally relevant, challenging and important bands in America.

Though it was released on a major label (Columbia's Epic subsidiary) in the late '60s, Leonda's sole album, Woman in the Sun, is extremely rare, and little known even among fans of singer/songwriters of the era. Because Leonda is Native American, and sometimes uses prominent vibrato in her vocal phrasing, she might generate comparisons to the most well-known Native American singer/songwriter of that era, Buffy Sainte-Marie. Actually, however, she's almost as similar to Annisette of Savage Rose or (more distantly) Melanie, or perhaps some of the gutsier woman singers from late-'60s West Coast rock bands. While Leonda has an appealing, somewhat raspy voice, her folk-bluesy material (with backup help from members of the Canadian rock band the Paupers) is less impressive. The songs are fairly meandering and not all that tuneful, if good-natured with a vaguely hippie uplifting vibe. Things are better when she moves away from a blues base to a folkier one, as she does with the orchestrated "When I Lived in My Grandmother's House" and the acoustic "Zono My Bird." The album was reissued on CD by Fallout in 2007.

After his acoustic debut, Huckle recorded this album with a full band creating a fascinating mix between folk and rock. This is a favourite album for folk and roots music collectors. Extremely rare and hard to find, it has arrived up to $400 on auctions. Sometimes with an "Astral Weeks" flavour, this album combines great songwriting with an excellent freedom feeling and a very special performance.

Free jazz has not produced many notable guitarists. Experimental musicians drawn to the guitar have had few jazz role models; consequently, they've typically looked to rock-based players for inspiration. James "Blood" Ulmer is one of the few exceptions -- an outside guitarist who has forged a style based largely on the traditions of African-American vernacular music. Ulmer is an adherent of saxophonist/composer Ornette Coleman's vaguely defined Harmolodic theory, which essentially subverts jazz's harmonic component in favor of freely improvised, non-tonal, or quasi-modal counterpoint. Ulmer plays with a stuttering, vocalic attack; his lines are frequently texturally and chordally based, inflected with the accent of a soul-jazz tenor saxophonist. That's not to say his sound is untouched by the rock tradition -- the influence of Jimi Hendrix on Ulmer is strong -- but it's mixed with blues, funk, and free jazz elements. The resultant music is an expressive, hard-edged, loudly amplified hybrid that is, at its best, on a level with the finest of the Harmolodic school.
Ulmer began his career playing in funk bands, first in Pittsburgh (1959-1964) and later around Columbus, OH (1964-1967). Ulmer spent four years in Detroit before moving to New York in 1971. He landed a nine-month gig at the famed birthplace of bop, Minton's Playhouse, and played very briefly with Art Blakey. In 1973, he recorded Rashied Ali Quintet with the ex-John Coltrane drummer on the Survival label. That same year, he hooked up with Ornette Coleman, whose concept affected Ulmer's music thereafter. The guitarist's recordings from the late '70s and early '80s exhibit a unique take on his mentor's aesthetic. His blues and rock-tinged art was, if anything, more raw and aggressive than Coleman's free jazz and funk-derived music (a reflection, no doubt, of Ulmer's chosen instrument), but no less compelling from either an intellectual or an emotional standpoint. In 1981, Ulmer led the first of three record dates for Columbia, which helped to expose his music to a wider public. Around this time Ulmer began an association with tenor saxophonist David Murray, Bassist Amin Ali, and drummer Ronald Shannon Jackson. As the Music Revelation Ensemble, this intermittent assemblage (with various other members added and subtracted) would produce a number of intense, free-blowing albums over a span of almost two decades.
Ulmer's work has varied in quality over the years. In 1987, with the cooperative group Phalanx (George Adams, tenor sax; Sirone, bass; and Rashied Ali, drums), Ulmer drew successfully on the free jazz expressionism that made his name. Generally, however, Ulmer's interest in out jazz waned in the '80s and '90s, to the extent that his music became progressively more structured, rhythmically regular, and (arguably) less inventive. Much of his later work bears scant resemblance to the edgy free jazz he played earlier. Nevertheless, '90s recordings with the Music Revelation Ensemble showed him still capable of playing convincingly in that vein.
Blood dug deeply into an investigation of the blues as the century turned. First he recorded Memphis Blood: The Sun Sessions with guitarist Veron Reid both performing and producing. The album also starred veteran Ulmer sideman Charles Burnham on violin. In 2003 he issued No Escape From the Blues, recorded at Electric Lady studio. A thorouhgly psychedlic funky take on the genre, Reidand Burnham were present in the same roles once more, and old friend Olu Dara stopped into to contribute as well. In 2005 Blood released Birthright, on Joel DOrn's Hyena label. It is easily his most intimatre recording. Completely solo in the studio (Reid once again produced) it contains 10 orignals and two covers of classic reportoire and takes Blood's blues jounrey to an entirely new level. ~ Chris Kelsey and Thom Jurek

San Francisco blues guitar king Joe Louis Walker has been purveying his biting brand of West Coast blues since the '60s, with time off for good behavior (literally -- he spent years going "straight" attending school and playing gospel). On Between a Rock and the Blues he manages to keep one foot in the L.A. blues he grew up on (T-Bone Walker, Lowell Fulson, et al.) and the other in a more modern sound, both in his songwriting and his impassioned fretwork. On the likes of "Eyes Like a Cat" and "Way Too Expensive," Walker's seasoned band whips up a sassy, swinging, old-school jump blues feel, while "Tell Me Why" leans into a classic-sounding Chicago-style shuffle. Walker's voice, still lithe and clear at 58, rings out authoritatively over it all, and his concise, stinging guitar makes no apologies for asserting its dominion over all it surveys. An unplugged stab at Delta blues on "Send You Back" feels less convincing, but other cuts, such as album-opening "I'm Tide" [sic] and "If There's a Heaven" show off a crunchier, grittier, more rock-inflected guitar tone and a compositional sensibility to match. When Walker taps into this more modern-sounding mode, though, it's important to realize there's no pandering involved. Even though his roots go back way further, he didn't begin establishing his own sound as a solo recording artist until the '80s, so it's entirely natural for his style to have picked up some rock & roll attack along the way. Crucially, he never overdoes it, maintaining just the right balance between the understated and the in-your-face. He hasn't stopped growing as a songwriter either -- Walker's original tunes dominate the album, and they reveal both a strict avoidance of lyrical blues tropes and a knack for deftly inserting thoughtful observations in between burning riffs and gut-level grooves.

The seven works on the disc (two each by Harry Partch, John Cage, and Lou Harrison and one by LaMonte Young) are among of the most enjoyable introductory albums to just intonation. Guitarist John Schneider, who arranged several of the pieces on the disc for harp and guitar, is joined by harpist Amy Schulman and, in one work, by percussionist Gene Sterling. Schneider's extensive and highly informative notes guide the reader painlessly through a discussion of tuning theories and the history of the pieces.
Lou Harrison's Suite No 2, LaMonte Young's Sarabande, and Harry Partch's Two Studies and Barstow were all originally written or later adapted by the composer for just intonation. Except for Barstow, the performances are arranged for the present combination of instruments by Schneider. The performances are gentle and atmospheric, using the unexpected scale notes -- often with certain notes being pretty far off the standard piano keyboard -- for color and drama, rather than chromaticism and chord structure.
The only vocal work is Partch's Barstow, Eight Hitchhiker Inscriptions, intoned, sung, and played by Schneider in his reconstruction of its original version for voice and adapted guitar. Partch fans will be familiar with the later version of Barstow, with additional voices and an ensemble of Partch instruments. In this close-to-original version, Schneider finds the work grittier and less funny than in the later version. Here, the sense of desperation yet determination to carry on is closer to the surface.
Three other works, (Dream and In a Landscape by John Cage, and Six Sonatas by Harrison) are adapted into just intonation tuning by Schneider. These non-harmonic pieces, without appreciable tonal modulation, work just fine in this manner.

Approaching our 50th anniversary we have been toying with the idea of releasing a box set to celebrate this special occasion.
For the new album we invited the original Wild Blues guys from 1970: Charles van den Heuvel (piano), Fred Huissen (drums), Charles van der Steeg (tenor saxophone) and co-founder Jos de Wilde (slide).
Great to see everyone invited was still playing and still had the blues feel from the early days. Even after all those years it felt like they never left the band.
Most of the tracks were recorded live in one take, just like the good old Wild Blues days.
The results can be heard on the new double album "50 & Beyond".

Collectors have long known about Milwaukee's Major Arcana, but I'm surprised it hasn't attracted more mainstream attention. Jim Spencer originally made his name as a writer/publisher, responsible for a series of early-1970s underground magazines, including Freek. He also found time to record a pair of mid-1970s solo LPs that attracted local attention, but did little on the national scene.
In 1974 he decided to form a band, recruiting the talents of bassist Michael Burdecki, lead guitarist Randall Dubis, and percussionist Jim Kitchen. Released on Spencer's own A Major Label (which also released the highly sought after Anonymous album), "Major Arcana" served as a showcase for Spencer who handled all of the vocals and was credited with writing, or co-writing nine of the ten songs (the one exception being a cover of the traditional 'Greensleeves'). Propelled by Spencer's likeable voice (for some reason every time I listen to the LP I think of Jack Black in 'High Fidelity'), musically the album was hard to describe since it bounced all over the horizon including stabs at conventional blues, commercial ballads, folk-rock, Dr. John-styled funk ('Papa Doc') and even jazzy interludes.
Curiously lots of reviews have slapped a 'psych' label on the LP. Frankly that's the one genre I just don't hear much of - maybe a little in side two's 'Down Under Blues' and the closing 'Greensleeves'. Maybe I'm simply going deaf ... In spite of some cheesy synthesizers, co-written with Milwaukee poet Charles Dynzof (aka Chuck Simmons), 'Western Wind' started the album off with a stunning ballad, with 'Shake Me' and 'Steal Your Love Back Home' turning in equally engaging mid-tempo pop pieces. It wasn't perfect. 'Deanna Durbin Blues' and 'Fran's Blues' were okay, if unexceptional blues numbers.
Interestingly guitarist Dubis went on to pursue the genre in his post-Major Arcana career (see below). Elsewhere, courtesy of buddy Sigmund Snopek III, the flute interludes quickly became an irritant. Still, the album's loose, low tech feel more than compensated for the somewhat fragmented musical lineup, making it a perfect LP to play on one of those cold, rainy or snowy Sunday mornings when you can't get much energy going.
Depending on which source you use, between 1,000 and 2,500 copies were pressed. Regardless, the LP's hard to find. Original copies are also worth owning for the cool Denis Kitchen cover art (the only album cover he's ever done), as well as the hard to find Peter Poplaski poster insert.
On a related note, in 1999 Kitchen had artist Roger May convert the original print into 3D. I believe he had 100 copies printed (I own #76) and he sells signed artist print copies for $50 over the internet. Suffering from a number of personal issues and apparently heavily into drugs, Spencer died of a stroke. He was only 39 years old.
In the late-1970s Dubis moved to Denver, Colorado where he ended up touring with a number of local acts including the late Son Seals and Sonny Rhodes. He also formed The Randall Dubis Band which has released a series of albums.

4 UK guys recorded this album in Belgium and only released in Italy. Great stoned trippy organ based psychedelic, strong flute, great musicianship.
Malachi was an excellent band of Acid Rock with incorporation of Latin instruments (congas, bongos, timbales) and progressive basis. In 1971 he released his first plate called Malachi, which had a very particular sound (the guitar does not exist), loaded with Latin elements and changes of very funky rhythms.
The use of keyboard excels of the other instruments managing to become key point of the album. An interesting album with a completely European Line-Up (England-Belgium-Italy) but with a strong Latin influence that makes it exotic and very entertaining...
A very rhythmic with folk and psychedelic touches album, his first song Return of a Stranger with great pace and psychedelia that combine well, their other issues such as Clog Clog 2¨unos totally 1 and rhythmic themes and solos only part of the congas, if they heard this serious group paresido something Santana in his first records, for those who like music with a lot of rhythm and psychedelia is recommended this record.

AllMusic Review by Richie Unterberger
It's sometimes not realized that Joni Mitchell was a hugely influential force on young women singer/songwriters in the early '70s, sometimes to the point where the influence, and even imitation, was fairly obvious. You hear a lot of early Mitchell on British singer/songwriter Juliet Lawson's obscure 1972 album Boo. Recorded with the help of some guys from British folk-rock band Trees (producer David Costa and bassist Bias Boshell) and saxophonist Lol Coxhill, it sold a few thousand copies and got some positive press in the U.K. when it was released, but sank into obscurity after its first pressing sold out. You might hear some Carole King on some of the more mainstream cuts here as well, though Lawson's not as good a singer or composer as either King or Mitchell. It's better than some other rare albums bearing these imprints, however, with some lyrical eccentricity (particularly on the unfathomable "Who Is India?") and oddly structured tunes. Yet it's hard to get past the inevitable unfavorable comparisons. "Let Me Not Put You Down" is more distinguished than much of the material as it opts for an early-'70s British folk-progressive rock sound that doesn't have marked reference points to the early-'70s American singer/songwriter movement, while "The Weeds in the Yard" also stands out for its quirky combination of bouncy piano, Coxhill's saxophone, and a string arrangement. [The 2005 CD reissue adds historical liner notes and demo versions of five of the album's songs.]

The title of Many Bright Things' third album highlights the nature of the project: a large cast of friends coalescing around guitarist Stan Denski. After a seven-year gap, Denski -- better known by now as the compiler for QDK Media's high-profile series of obscure psychedelia, Love, Peace & Poetry -- delivers an entertaining disc of spaced-out jams. Many Bright Friends combines the folky side of Jefferson Airplane ("Minor Parade for 18 Strings," the title track, "There Will Be a Slight Delay") and the crudest grooves of the Krautrock school. The album is structured around two main tracks. The first one is "East West," a 21-minute cover of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band's anthem to cross-pollination. Featured in this orgiastic jam are guitarists Denski, Nick Saloman, Daniel Noland, and Al Simones (trading solos); Vess Ruthenberg (bass); Steve Obenreder (drums); and harp player Byrd Birocco, who steals the show. "I Am Not a Collector Potato," the other key track here, is a feature for Jello Biafra, who tells listeners what collecting psychedelic records used to be like (with plenty of reverb in the voice), over a quiet groove improvised by Denski, Larry Demyer (guitar), David "Tufty" Clough (bass), and Lon Paul Elrich (percussion). Sandwiched between them is "The Silver Witch," the only song of the set, a nice ballad featuring the delicious Alisha Sufit. Denski presents the multi-tracked acoustic guitar piece "There Will Be a Slight Delay" as a bonus track, but its gentle pastures of echoing guitar parts deserve a better defense. People impervious to Biafra's sense of humor (or collector potatoes who don't find it funny to be laughed at -- yeah, you know who you are!) will probably prefer that encore. Many Bright Friends probably did not end up on anyone's 2005 "best-of" list, but it is an honest record deserving a few honest listens.

For this second recording devoted to French Baroque music for two solo transverse flutes, Marie-Céline Labbé and Marion Treupel-Franck perform the six suites by Pierre Danican Philidor (1681-1731), pieces taken from the three collections published by the composer in Paris in 1717 and 1718. Written in a highly original style in which one senses the spirit of freedom blowing over Versailles and France during the regency of the Duke d'Orléans, these short suites, in addition to the principal dances in vogue at the court of Versailles in the early 18th century, each comprise a fugue.
A few brunettes by Michel Pignolet de Montéclair (1667-1737) round out the programme. The brunette, a little rustic song with an evocative title, was a musical genre quite popular in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The selection proposed here will enable the listener to discover another facet of the work of Montéclair, the composer who was the object of the two flautists' first recording.

Mark Templeton returns with the third installment in his Heart trilogy. Following on the heels of Scotch Heart (2011) and Jealous Heart (2013), Gentle Heart is a fitting closure to this story, an album filled with bending, yearning phrases - sounds that feel like they are actually speaking to you from another time, as if they're being piped into the room where you're listening today.
There is a continued use of elements that hearken to tape machines and older technology combined with acoustic instruments and modern studio techniques and sensibilities, squarely centered in the contemporary moment. Loops stumble and fall off their track, then regain their footing, breaking the concentration enough to remind you that someone is here and paying attention. In both structure and emotion, Templeton captures time in a novel way - connecting points that don't immediately lend themselves to such a connection, deftly balancing qualities that are both haunting and inviting. This music is one of imagined memory, capturing moments that never happened, but could have.
An example of this can be seen in how the track titles suggest a sense of Western tropes, but the music is anything but, not intentionally misleading the would-be listener but rather nodding to a set of ideas and images that drive the artist's intentions in this album, and through his interpretations the tracks become far removed from any assumption of what these words or images may mean. It speaks to what is happening in the background and lets the listener think about how one point moves to another. It is not a strict form. It is a flexible guide that allows the music to touch things that it doesn't hold on to tightly - playing with mood and tone while veering into its own direction.
Much in this vein Gentle Heart closes with two pieces that make one think of a vast prairie, one that has been rearranged in a computer and put back together - not to make it more digital but to make it new through the perspective of today. Twangy guitar strums filled with hisses and fuzz roll into clipped phrases that are nostalgic in their specific way, a modern imagining of a past time that may hold a sense of simple peacefulness, of space, of a long view that goes forever. ~ Ezekiel Honig.
